it is going to be a general strike and a mass day of action here all started by "occupy oakland." we have seen some people milling around this morning making signs for the planned protests today. thousands of people are expected to participate. now, yesterday businesses near downtown oakland got an email from mayor jean quan. she encouraged them to stay open but did warn them of the strike telling them to be sure their business has good quality locks to cover exposed door jams with steel plates and to leave cash drawers empty in case things get out of control. several businesses have decided to just stay closed today including one downtown bank. hundreds of teachers are expected to walk out of the classroom, although students are being told to go to school. the oakland school for the arts is the only school officially closed today citing student safety concerns. all told more than 100 labor unions say they support this protest. >> people have to go to work and they have to go through this -- this -- this uhm, march, or whatever, decide not to go to work, could jeopardize themselves with losing their jobs. this is
