they're over union square as we speak. just minutes ago there was tense moments in front of the entrance to macy's. which prompted a large contingent of police officers to move towards the profit yefrts. some in riot gear. and demonstrators were challenging the police. the police responded not to challenge them, demonstrators did back off. this has bnt case most of the day. protesters plant themselves in front of a store, police stand by, then they move on. earlier in front of the saks fifth avenue. they danced and chanted then moved on. and the goal here according to one demonstrateor is getting people not to spend money at the big stores. and they're not clear on where folks should spend money. businesses for the most part around union square as we've seen here, the lighting is about to begin and folks are gathered. and except for a roaming demonstration there hasn't been much in the way of folks having their days messed up. again, they go on. but so does christmas lighting and so does the shopping. >> thank you. >> and

occupy protesters are trying to bring san francisco's union square to a stand still on one of the busiest nights of the year. it is our top story. >> reporter: the small group of occupy protesters tried to make a run and make their way here into union square where the tree lighting ceremony was taking place an hour or so ago but the police blocked their way. they sort of formed a line down here on the street level to make sure the protesters could not make their way into the area where the tree lighting ceremony was taking place. earlier, though, this was the scene on stockton street in front of macy's. we will show you. about that point there was 100 or so occupy protestors in a protest against black friday targeting corporations on this busy shopping day. this was a standoff in the middle of the street. people were sitting down in the street as the police were giving them orders to vacate the area. the police and protesters coming face-to-face at one point. but, as far as we know there had been no arrests and at this point as we come back out live the occupy protesters the group is down
