here is the time line according to virginia tech police. the murdered officer radios in that he was is stopping a car at about 12:15. sometime after that, a man walks up to the officer and opens fire. panicked witnesses started calling 911 at 12:30 and just seven minutes later, 12:37, virginia tech sends out an alert, the first alert, to students, faculty and staff. gunshots reported, coliseum parking lot, stay inside, secure doors. ten minutes after that, 12:47, vt alert sent out a description of the suspect. a white male with a backpack. the university has put together at least eight different ways of warning students about situations like this. e-mail blast to all vt.edu accounts. electronic message boards in the classrooms. campus sirens and loud speakers. phone, text, desktop alerts and more. >> just a couple of minutes before 12:30 this afternoon is when the first call came into the police department. as i understand it from a witness who had observed someone walk up and fire what they believed to be a gun at the officer. based on that

we have the latest from the campus. >> reporter: it's very sad here on virginia tech's campus. we talked to different students, and many of them were too heartbroken to talk on camera. they are mourning over the tragic loss. >> i feel it was a bad loss, considering it was a vt policeman. >> reporter: a 39-year-old, married father of five children, deriek crouse, and had been on the force for four years. >> everybody coming together and banding together, and we had support from other universities, and as a campus everybody came together to support one another. >> reporter: officer crouse made a traffic stop in the parking lot and the suspect walked up to officer crouse with a handgun and shot and killed him in his patrol car. the dashboard cam was rolling, and they are not telling us if it provided the shooting. >> it would provide closure for the family. >> reporter: the suspect stole a car and then took a bus and then shot the officer. nbc news reports the police believe the man shot himself. >> it could have happened to any of them, and knowing that, it's disappointing. i don'

it was found here on the campus of virginia tech. ide from that incident it turns out that he he had very relatively insignificant record at least that we have been able to determine in the few minutes since we found out his identity. he got a speeding ticket traveling 38 miles per hour in a 25 zone and that he a court appear innocence in february of 2012 in regards to that. but the arresting officer in that particular case was not officer krause, the officer whom he later shot. so that's basically it. very, very confusing and obviously disturbing course of events here. trace? >> trace: doug, you have been on campus all day. how is the university coping tonight? >> we just finished one a candlelight vigil that happened just behind me. wrapping up 10 minutes ago a solemn affair. people stood stoically listening to taps on the bugle in respect to the fallen officer. ironically, it occurred if you take a look to my right over here right where the memorial, the newly erected memorial to the victims of the 2007 massacre stands. many of the

. >>> you can call it dij@ vu, a man opening fire with a gun on the virginia tech campus. it happened on the blacksburg main campus about five hours from baltimore and an hour southwest of roanoke. that's where we find abc's scott goldberg. scott, you're joining us live this morning. what is the feel as we begin to make it to first light? reporter: well, right now, charley, on the campus it's kind of a nervous feeling. the students yesterday had an impromptu vigil at a site of the memorial for the 2007 shooting, the worst massacre in u.s. history when 33 people including the shooter were killed. they came out here to remember -- or to think about the police officer who was shot yesterday and obviously they're still very much thinking about what happened almost five years ago and this happened to coincide with a visit by campus officials to washington to appeal a fine levied against the university because of the slow reaction time when that happened in 2007. this time around, though, there was a much quicker response. within six minutes of the shooting, the campus shut down,

this is the first time a virginia tech campus police officer has been killed in the line of duty. virginia tech's campus was on lockdown and high alert for more than four hours. swat teams and heavily armed police swept into campus buildings and ordered students to stay indoors. >> do not leave this room until you're told? do you understand? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: it started when a gunman approached a campus police officer conducting a traffic stop. witnesses say the gunman immediately fled. freshman juliette fielding saw what happened next. >> then the police pulled up and his car door and when they opened it he just fell out towards the ground and i could see his face and it was covered in blood. i don't know if the blood was coming from his head or face exactly. and then they immediately started reviving him. >> reporter: police found another wounded person nearby. that person, who later died, is believed to be the gunman. university president charles steger. >> it's very traumatic and this brings back difficult memories of the past. >> reporter: today's shooting took place a
