it was part of the shanghai world expo that dealt with sustainable cities. idea was to try to capture all. elements of danish city life where the fact that the city is sustainable increases its life quality. 37% of copenhagen is commuted by bicycle means they're never stuck in traffic, never have to sit in a traffic jam. they can move freely to and from work. at the heart of it, sort of a sample of clean water where people can actually paddle and swim. with a little mermaid. the national symbol of denmark we managed to kidnap for six months. we decided to place the little mermaid of denmark not a copy of the mermaid, we actually moved her to china. we had to rest her out of the hands of the danish equivalent of the tea party trying to pass a law specifically against moving the mermaid. we had to get her through chinese customs. and there she is. alarm clock. i am so glad to get rid of it. just to be able to wake up in the morning on your own. that's a big accomplishment to me. i don't know how much money i need. the mermaid, we actually moved t e that's what

[applause] >> thank you, tom, and thank you, mayors, for having me here this afternoon. as you can probably guess, this is a very important event for siemens. this conference is about an issue that we've all been thinking about a lot for the last several years, how do we create jobs, and how do we create a lasting and vibrant economic recovery. it's also worth recognizing that recent numbers suggest that the u.s. economy may be coming back a little. i think last month we added about 200,000 jobs. i think we have a long way to go, but i'm optimistic, more optimistic than i was a few months ago. i think it's also, we should note that the strength of our economy a lot of the recovery, i think, is due to the manufacturing sector which is what i'd like to talk a little bit about today. in fact, manufacturing employment grew by about 136,000 jobs last year which, amazingly, is the first time that we've had jobs growth

independent musicians have a hard time in the booking aspect, in making enough money to be sustainable here in the city, and i would see myself in a role tha tcould -- that could liase between artists and the community. i feel like we are in a time where the industry is changing so much. my company has gone from a distribution company to a marketing company and in that way i interact with press all the time and social media. i bring i feel all level of youth to this. the reason i am successful in my day job is because i am an artist, i am involved in creation. that said, san francisco has a vibrant entertainment scene. it continues to grow, it continues to bring people to the city. i believe that there are a lot of ways that this commission can positively impact the scene as it is now. i would say one of the first things i would bring to the table ideally would be the way to book local and by that, i mean to have venue owners to have successful venues whether they be corporately owned or independently owned. book artists on weekends to open up for established artists with the hope of growing those arti

integration of diverse populations and affordability and quality of life issues in cities and regions and also -- and sustainability, in which encompasses a broad range of things. it's primarily environmental sustainability. the overarching theme which i think is particularly pertinent here in the bay area is regional governance and cooperation where we try to emphasize move each of our cities that they really need to figure out in their broader economic region, not just within their city limits. so how do you coordinate with the communities around you to advance some of these policy issues, whether it's transportation, environmental improvements, economic development, education systems, workforce training, etc. these are some of the issues that we really want to publicize the best practices so that practitioners such as ourselves can bring these ideas back home and really move an issue forward. i think here in the bay area, bringing this group of four european experts here has really been an interesting exercise for me, not knowing the city of oakland very much at all, having been to san francisco a few times, but
