let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >>> stocks started the month of march with a rally. after new reports showed the economic recovery is moving ahead. the number of americans applying for unemployment benefits hit a four-year low last week. and a government report finds americans earned more and spent more last month. major retailers, including target, macy's and the gap, are all reporting sales gains for february. but higher gas prices are starting to eat into people's budgets. and according to the news poll, two-thirds of americans say the rising cost of gas is hurting their finances. 38% say it is a serious hardship. the average price has risen about 37 cents in the past month. prices have never been so high for this time of year. that has americans buying smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. companies are reporting double- digit sales gains last month. chrysler's february sales rose 40% compared to a year ago. last february, chrysler sales were low because many of its revamped models were just arriving in show rooms. tha
