tara. >> reporter: this is going to be a very emotionally charged day. as you remember there were more than 30 students inside the building when the shooting happened. some were able to escape outside of a side door. others were able to lock themselves inside a classroom. the students that were inside the classroom where the gunman opened fire they were nursing students and will not come back to this campus. meanwhile flowers continue to pile up at the front door of oikos university where seven people were shot and killed. three others gyred just three weeks ago. school founder and president stood alone here. we did speak to a school dean by phone. >> understandably we are doing our best for comforting the victims of the family. >> reporter: former student 43- year-old juan go is accused of killing six students and a receptionist. he also faces three charges of attempted murder. he went on a shooting rampage because he was disgruntled by them not refunding his tuition after he dropped out of the program. seven people lost their lives that day. six studen

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live to let us know how it ended. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: it has ended peacefully so that's the good news although it's now turned into a homicide investigation. the man who holed himself up into his house for a few hours has surrendered. >> there were no indications that there were hostages. we are happy to report there was a peaceful resolution to this. >> reporter: that was the sound of a flash grow nay used earlier this morning to try to get the man out of the house. we watched the s.w.a.t. team did a sweep of the home and the backyard which they are now treating as a crime scene. about a quarter to 2:00, police received a 911 call from someone inside the house off cleveland avenue. when they arrived, a 51-year- old man was lying in the front of the home suffering stab wounds. he later died at the hospital. officers spoke to a man plays say is roger gantzerrt who neighbors say owned a plumbing business. the home was found to have several guns. >> there were surveillance cameras, pitbull, something that

tara moriarty is there what is going on? >> reporter: they are trying to determine if there are anymore people inside that home and they don't believe there is but there were five people. one adult and four children who were inside of the home and they were able to get out safely and that's the good news. if we take a look at the video, you can see it was a dispatched garage and quickly went to another home, and basically they had about 30 firefighters who were working this fire and they were able to contain it with in about a half hour and they are still on the scene and they are trying to go the them out but the good news again is that the family is safe. we will try to figure out what being exactly caused the fire but dive from oakland ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> it happened just after midnight in the ingle side district. there are a few details but police inspector says the victim was in his 20s. they are still not clear how he was killed. the investigation continues. they will release more information about a shoot

tara moriarty tried to get some answers. good afternoon, tori. >> reporter: good afternoon,er to territory. oakland has had -- good afternoon, tori. oakland has had one of the highest crime rates in the country and friday night around 6:30, 125 calls came in. opd was not able to respond to any of those calls. the department was at full staff and these calls contained request for followup services or emergencies. >> this is not an unusual occurrence. this is a symptom of the public safety crisis we have in oakland. the bottom line, we don't have enough police officers to police the city. >> officers took as many calls as they could. that doesn't help you if you are the one who needs a police service right now and we didn't go. >> reporter: opd has 650 officers on staff now. the department will get 55 new officers. but four officers leave the force every month due to retirement. officers say their numbers are down 25% since 2009 and studies has shown that as men as 1100 of them are needed to -- as many as 1100 of them are need

tara mergener has the latest from virginia beach. >> reporter: this was the scene just moments after navy fa-18 fighter jet crashed into a two- story complex in virginia beach. the thick, black smoke filled the air while the tail smoldered in the rubble. witnesses could tell the aircraft was in trouble. >> it was like a skittering where it was popping and then stop. and then we just saw the plane go down. >> reporter: another eyewitness said this photo of the jet was dumping fuel. its nose was angled upward, apparently to slow its speed and then just fell from the sky. >> the front end of the plane just went down and then, boom. >> shortly after takeoff, the aircraft suffered a catastrophic mechanical malfunction. >> reporter: both pilots ejected moments before the crash and parachuted down near the ground landing by the wreckage and the apartments. he found one of the pilots on his back porch. >> he was in shock. still strapped to his seat. we just picked him up and dragged him to the other side of the parking lot away from the fire. >> reporter: both pilots are expected to recover.

it handed out side a downtown law office, tara?reporter: well, friends say kim conover was stopped by her husband. she came to her attorney's office but what she didn't realize was that kevin conover came here armed with a gun. police say 41-year-old kevin conover shot and killed 43-year- old kim and shot her and then killed himself. the attorney witnessed the entire murder/suicide. friends are concerned because the couple had twins together, a boy and a girl just under two years old. >> as we pulled up, my daughters blessed themselves and the scene and said a quick prayer and we hope everything goes well. i know it is going to be a tough road for all of them. >> now the twins were nearby when the shooting happened but are not harmed. kim also has two teenage daughters from a previous marriage. she grew up in petaluma and was a 2nd grade teacher at meadow elementary school. we will be there as teachers and students are receiving the news of this horrible tragedy. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> employees are threate

tara moriarty is outside of police headquarters with the details. tara? >> reporter: well, we've spoken to some people this morning and tried to get their reaction. a lot of people say they are shocked. just as many say they are not surprised. oakland is one of the most crime-ridden cities in america and it's simply under staff. oakland police were actively working 17 priority calls for service. this was around 6:30. 125 calls came in. opd was not able to respond to any of those calls. these requests for calls were for nonemergencies and then also service calls. there were 21 other calls. none of those people saw a police officer. >> i do know if they have all of these calls stacked up like that, obviously they are understaffed for a problem in the city where we need more police. >> that's very surprising and very interesting. i heard they were supposed to be hiring people. yeah, hire some more officers, get acquainted or ask for help from other counties. >> reporter: now, opd admitted to the shortcoming and is investigating the problem and trying to come

the new details we have learned overnight, tara? >> reporter: well i am told from a source within the oakland police department that the overwhelming majority of victims were women. we were able to get ahold of the public information officer at the university and she tells us the suspect was interviewed at the jail and shows absolutely no remorse. here is the scene and you can see it is an active scene, they have roped off the entire school and it has been shut down indefinitely. we are learning more details about the suspect who was detained within an hour and a half of the shooting spree. one thing they have not been able to locate is the weapon. a 45 caliber weapon. the first call came in from the university and when officer arrived a woman was bleeding on the ground. moments later they found others running for their lives not knowing if a man or woman was still inside. the suspect was a 45-year-old student of the university and was disgruntled because he had been thrown out. he grabbed a receptionist and told students to lineup

tara moriarty was the first reporter on the scene and you just spoke with one of the neighbors tara?porter: that's right, we just spoke to a woman who lives on the corner and she described the terrifying moments when she figured out there was a fire. her whole backyard was glowing red when her neighbor who lives in this house banged on her door and yelled for her to get out. becky allan says she literally ran out the door in her pajamas, luckily the people who lived next door all got out safely. the fire broke out in the garage and quickly spread to the home. she said it was the most a scary wake-up call she has ever had. >> i just feel so blessed, you know this is a house my dad grew up in. we have owned this house since 1925 and i feel like my father and my grandfather are watching over me. >> the fire took 20 minutes to battle and put out. they are still monitoring hot spots and the red cross is on the scene helping the family find a place to stay since the home sustained some heavy damage. and investigators are here trying to determine equitabilitily what -- exactly what sparked

tara? >> reporter: that's right, investigators have been interviewing him, obviously his name is won go and he is showing -- jaun go and he is showing no remorse and the shooting spree he does remember vividly and he has been forthcoming but they are still not able to locate the weapon. it happened yesterday at 10:30 and officers got a call about a woman bleeding on the ground at the university and at that time they i don't know if the gunman was still on the loose so they established a perimeter around the school and we watched people coming out and going into ambulances. we just confirmed six women were killed and one man. he was apparently disgruntled by the administration here and he wanted to exact revenge, a woman inside the administration. he came here grabbed a receptionest hostage and demanded to know where that woman might be. he entered the classroom and shot the students at close range. he continued to search for his target and shot more people before he fled in one of the victi

the oakland estuary where police divers have been searching for the gun suspected in that attack, tara? >> reporter: divers have literally been feeling around with their hands because it is extremely muddy and mirky at the estuary and this is where they believe the gunman dumped his weapon. so these dive teams have had their working cut out for them. they believed he had his 45 caliber and all day yesterday and into the night, divers came to look along with a special police squad that had special sonar equipment. we do not know if they found the gun yet. police have given us the first photograph of 43-year-old one goh who was kicked out of the university. >> he was upset at the administration because he was expelled for anger management issues with other students. >> reporter: investigators say one goh went to the university monday morning with the intent on harming that administrator and she was not even at the school as the time. they also revealed one goh was upset about his inability to get along with women at a university where most of the students were women. and he bought a gun
