we started a chapter u.c.erkeley in order to create a support network for the students. >> cheryl: how did it work for you? >> just being in the program really made the difference made the difference whether i was going to ae ourunior college our four-year university. i was eligible for a four-year, tnecessarily to do itnecessaril. >> cheryl: so you have somebody to teach people and act as mentors. who are some of the kids that participate? >> the students currently in our program are first generation college students coming from low income families. that is usually the population we would like to serve. a lot of those students don't have that support at home. if they are going to public high school, the counselor is pretty much all there is. >> so it's mentoring. and how does the mentoring get involved with the students, is it weekly or big commitment? >> we are mainly volunteer. it depends on how the mentors are involved but we have monthly events. a lot of where trips where they can build that strong relati

or u.c. system. last year the unified school district board of education required all students that beginning with the class of 2014 to meet the u.c. a-g criteria. and i'm going to go over that in just one moment. data shows that there is a significant need for us to address the skill level for many of our students that are entering high school before they actually can be ready to meet these requirements. and i'm going to show you some of that data today. but first of all, let's look at what is a-g. because these are simply letters, and i want to bring a clear definition to what those letters are. and i'm talking about this from the perspective of the u.c.c. issue system. the u.c.c. issue system requires a course sequence of courses in these areas. history, 30 credits, english, 40 credits, mathematics, 30 credits, laboratory science, 20, language other than english, 20, performing arts, 10, and 10 of an elective. these courses are submitted by schools across the state annually for approval by the u.

tonight here at u.c. berkeley, people came here to see him speak. there was so much interest in the event, it had to be moved outside to accommodate the crowd. a crowd of hundreds welcomed republican hopeful ron paul to the famously liberal u.c. berkeley campus. paul laid out issues he plans to address. >> too many wars. too many attacks on our liberties. too much death. too much mischief. too much to the special interests. >> reporter: heather came from lafayette to hear her candidate. >> i was a democrat. but i got into ron paul. and now, i'm in a republican. >> reporter: she says paul's foreign policy and budget strategy makes sense to her. >> bring our troops home. just staying out of people's business. >> reporter: her boyfriend is a campaign volunteer. >> balance the budget. cut a trillion dollars. obviously, we can't afford anything. he wants to cut education. no, he wants to cut the money out from the bureaucrats. >> reporter: many supporters say paul won't win the republican nomination. but that won't change their vote. >> we're going to wr

u.c. only considers one year or 10 credits of courses out of the 40 needed to complete english. so, for example, if we have a newcomer student coming in, in ninth grade, there is the potential that that student could take four years of an e.l.d. as required by law. only the final year of that course actually counts toward a u.c.b. credit. so just put that into context. a three-year data review, most newcomer students do not earn 50 credits. their ninth grade year, the first year they're in high school. in only 30% of newcomer students actually graduated within four years under the former graduation requirement that are in place now for classes of 2013, 2012, etc. the other thing is that of the approximate 800 ninth through 12th grade students that we had come into the direct last year, 300 of those were actually in the ninth grade. so it is significant that 300 of that number were actually in the ninth grade when they entered our schools. so i've given you a really an outline of the problem where we saw the problem. now let me give you an outline of some of the inputs that we di
