and their goal, their objective for the organized during the convention, an organization that, the american society of free persons of color for improving their condition in the united states for purchasing land and for the establishment of a settlement in upper canada. but they're not leaving the land, right? in 1830, you have african-americans establish a settlement in upper canada. they're going to establish a -- settlements in canada. between 1830 and 1850, there are -- not only settlements, but there are safe havens for those who escape along the underground railroad after the fugitive slave act. the fugitive slave act in september of 1850 made it a federal crime for anyone to give assistance to a runaway and in fact not to turn in a runaway, a fuj tich. so c -- fugitive. so canada became a destination. not just northern states. if you were going north you needed to go all the way to canada now. and because this organization had set up these settlements, they were already, ready to receive folk. you already had schools. you had clinics. you had housing put in place to accept people com

that's after the large majority of -- almost all-american combat forces, conventional units, had been withdrawn from vietnam. i tell you, the attitude, the environment was a heck of a lot different than it had been five years before, six years before when i first went to vietnam and there were more than half a million americans in vietnam at that time and the atmosphere was very much different in '72. >> what is the difference after soldier fighting a war in its early days where there are clear missions and soldier a decade, two decades into a war that has effectively no mission. >> interest question. the mig was never clear in vietnam during the entire time the americans were there. but i can tell you the mission when i went back it second time was to get out. and it had a certain resemblance to what is happening right now. in the very beginning when americans first went there, it was clear what we were trying to do. trying to clear the enemy. but by '72, we were trying to get the vietnamese to fight the war on our own but we knew we were going home. it is interesting when we first w

i think we'll have a great convention, and it will allow people to air their thoughts and opinions just like americans are a great spokesperson. convention planners expect to receive, i think only 4 million from unions which is less than half of what they contributed in 2008. are you concerned about unions from a fund-raising perspective? >> you know. of course i would love to have the help with this convention and many are finding ways to be helpful with the convention but i'm also very encouraged by the spirit of interest and enthusiasm from individuals across the country who are want to make sure this is a great convention. there will not be corporate or pac or lobbyist funding for this convention, so we're creating a national campaign and the enthusiasm has been tremendous. >> well charlotte was picked for its vibrant economy. what is the biggest reason for that? >> you know, i think one of the big reasons for that is in charlotte is the spirit of cooperation between the public and the private sectors. charlotte has come a long way, even over the last 30 or 40 years. there was a period of time of
