degrees, 25 in beijing, hitting 31 in taipei and hong kong. 37 above average in bangkok, and much of indochina looks like it is still seeing that heat. up towards the north, 11 degrees. after a bit of a warm run, starting to be under the influence again of cooler air across the north. let's go to north america. out towards the west, high pressure is keeping things mostly clear and settled. we will see some warmth pushing up towards the pacific northwest as well. but also resulting in extreme heat for the desert southwest. so southern california as well as parts of new mexico and arizona, dealing with some really intense temperatures. severe weather is going to be breaking out today across the overnight hours, certainly from colorado down through new mexico and into texas, and that's actually going to be sagging south. so coming towards the mexico, u.s. border, some severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and also the threat of tornados today. thunderstorms across the east are fairly widespread at the moment. they're going to be weakening off to the northeast, but all of this energy down in the so

the west, lots of heavy rain and thunderstorms are still impacting southern china and much of the indochina peninsula. the heaviest rain can be seen at the southern end of china and the northern tier of the indochina peninsula. out towards the east, there's a pink showing up. that will be severe tropical storm sanvu. it is still strengthening and will likely move south of the ogasawa islands over the weekend. so stormy conditions are expected to impact the islands from tomorrow. no major impact on mainland japan is in the forecast. there is more potent storms south of mexico. that will be hurricane bud. bud has been upgraded to a major hurricane now packing winds of 185 kilometers per hour with much higher gusts. it will likely hit the southwest coast of mexico by late friday. and projected to move inland and make a sharp turn and head out to sea. right now hurricane warnings are in place along this line. the hurricane conditions are in the forecast starting friday afternoon local time. in terms of precipitation, as much as 200 millimeters are likely in southwestern corner of mexico. so flo

we also have the southwest monsoon which is getting pretty active now over indochina. eastern and western coasts of indochina looking for heavy downpours on wednesday and into thursday. some other areas experiencing heavy rain is the southeast of the united states. and it's because of beryl. the tropical storm that made landfall on monday morning, now a tropical depression. moving through georgia into south carolina. making way for the water. now once it moves over the atlantic again, it's likely to get invigorated, become a tropical storm once again. keeping a close eye on what happens as we head into wednesday afternoon. at the moment, 45 kilometer an hour winds. we're not deal with storm force winds but it's going to be gusty around the system. the main threat is the rain. it has been so heavy over the last several days. the coast is still in for another soaking down here as we head into the next 48 hours. and overall totals could reach up to about 400 millimeters. so that's certainly enough to cause problems with flooding. now also that system is helping to pull lo

for indochina, the monsoon is starting to rev up. we're seeing heavier rain coming in towards thailand and western parts of indochina. that's just going to continue over the next couple of months as we see the monsoon strengthen. let's talk about what's happening in the u.s. and canada. up towards the north, a low pressure system moving along the u.s./canada border. a front associated with it will see thunderstorms and, in fact, those thunderstorms will be popping up down the rockies. up towards canada in the northeast, you could even see some very late snow. about 15 to 25 centimeters is possible. now down in the southwest, conversely, it's going to be very, very warm, hot indeed, and with low humidity and strong winds coming through, that spells fire danger. so critical fire weather in parts of utah as well as nevada and arizona. out towards the east, we're still seeing a lot of thunderstorms and instability for the southeast. this long front that's been stalled out, and is detached to the low in northeastern canada. thunderstorms

this is an area that we talked about called french indochina. back in the world war ii lecture we talked about how the japanese invaded french indochina and there was nothing france could do about it because france had already been knocked out of the war and the january needs moved in and took over. well, now that the war is over, the vietnamese would like to have their own right to determine their nation and they status. this guy wants to do that. that is ho chi minh. he drafts a declaration of independence in 1945 that is modelled after our own united states declaration of independence. if you put the two documents side by side, they are eerily similar. you would think that the united states would support a nation to who wants to be free and independent, self-determination. we don't. why not? we are not really going to support france in this. it's more of ho chi minh's political tendency. he is a communist. as much as we would like to support the independence of a nation, we are not going to support the independence of vietnam under communist

and again, for indochina, yesterday we were seeing some heavy rain towards the east. today again, the eastern half will get some soaking rains. but it's starting to move further towards the western half of the peninsula. all right. let's go now to north america. we have the first named storm of the season. leta here to the southwest of mexico. the first named storm of the eastern pacific, of course is moving west at 19 kilometers an hour. this is our tropical storm. is probably just going to start to weaken off. it will become a remnant low by friday. so it's moving away from land masses at the moment. doesn't look like it will be posing too much of a problem. certainly some good news. severe outbreaks of weather today, though, from southern texas down into northeastern mexico. some thunderstorms likely to contain damaging winds, flooding rains and potential for tornadoes here. the eastern coast is looking pretty wet from florida right up through the northeast once again. another round of heavy rain, thunderstorms embedded in there as well. and the potential for flash

across much of the philippines as well as the indochina peninsula, pop-up thunderstorms will be erupting throughout the next couple of days. in northern thailand, we have a report of 102 millimeters that has fallen and accumulated in this area, and this ongoing showers, sometimes heavy downpours could be creating just triggering some flash flooding situations. talking about flash floods, yesterday in nepal, we had a very bad situation. we have a video coming up from nepal to show you. now this is coming out from a city of pikara. heavy rain and snow melt led to this flash flood in the city. the river overflowed its banks resulting in this intense surge of water as you can see. this led to 13 deaths. many residents say this is the worst flash flood they have ever seen. with the monsoon season set to start in early june, more rains can be expected in the mountainous areas. if we pull back to show you that the conditions are much more stable in and around nepal, this is pikara where the video came out from. you will be seeing scattered showers which is very unwelcome to the area that has be

many cities across indochina and thailand in particular have been seeing temperatures of about 40-degrees plus for the last several days. let's go now to north america. severe outbreaks of weather in pretty much the same place all week. from the great lakes region down through the central plains. we've seen a very stubborn frontal system, lots of low-pressure systems forming over the front. and that has led to some severe storms. it's not going to change into your friday. pretty much the same picture. one of the reasons is we have a big ark of heat coming up across the east. it starts to collide with the cooler air in north. that's when we get the severe systems that usually occur farther to the south. that heat is reaching up into the upper midwest and great lakes region. that is going to continue on friday. out toward the northwest, much cooler system coming in. widespread chilly showers. although the snow will be confined to the mountains of western canada. here are your temperatures then. 12 degrees in vancouver. 12 in seattle also. then you can see where that heat starts to kick in.
