tom foreman is outfront tonight. now we've been sort of reaching this tipping point for a while, but what's the main reason this just happened? >> reporter: you know, that's a great question, erin. look at this, an amazing thing came out today. look at this, if you went into texas and went right down to maverick county, you would wind up in the most minority majority county in the country. about 97% of minority groups. somewhere in a county like this a baby was born in the last year that tipped over that edge and took it from just under 50% to just over 50% in terms of the minority babies in this country, people under 1 years old. slightly more minorities than white people right now. now, look at this, though. why did that happen? because of this massive immigration, largely from mexico for the past 30 years we've all heard about and because those families are producing more babies per family than most people are here, erin. that's really the fundamental driver of this change in this statistic. >> obviously with the a

tom foreman is here to tell us who is affected and why. what's going on, todd? >> this is the trap that's sitting out there for mr. romney and president obama because this is huge. right now we have 12.5 million people unemployed in this country and what's happening is the long term unemployment aid they were getting, the specific category in a deal that was struck earlier this year is now being pared back substantially for two reasons, one because many politicians know the economy is getting better and they're trying to get something about the deficit. the result is right now this year more than 400,000 people are now out of four benefits and this number will get bigger. look at the states and how bad the unemployment is, and the weird formula where some states are being bailed out and others aren't and every and it's been time and again by congress sxaul of the states have been told no extended benefits by the government and that's what's leaving people out on the lurch right now. >> here's a question, tom. some of those states have enormously high unemploymen

cnn's tom foreman is joining us now to break it all down for us. what are you seeing there, tom? public opinion in 1996 it was wide here, those no, those yes and it's been closing, closing, closing. now it's 2012 with half of the population for it and about half against it and a tiny, tiny sliver more in favor of gay marriage, but as roland pointed out earlier, look at what happened in the states at the same time even if that's what people tell pollsters at the actual polls and this has been overwhelming to say that people don't want it, 28 states with constitutional provisions defining marriage between a man and a woman and these are the dark blue ones and ten more are statutory provisions defining marriage between a man and a woman. and the statutory provision, in only seven allowed in only seven in five haven't decided anything. if this is the map right now and you compare it to the election map last time you can see a few key places where this might be a real issue for the president, florida, ohio, indiana, for example, where he won and yet these are states that have not been

i'm tom foreman.h voters and politicians tired of the campaigns these days, you might expect a highly divisive issue. think again. a startling report from a reputable group here says america has in its grasp just such a success on the issue of illegal immigration. and yet washington right now seems to have no idea what to do with it. despite the protests and counter-protests, the conservative outrage and liberal unrest all along the 2,000-mile u.s. border with mexico, raw numbers say the war on illegal immigration is largely over. the number of people trying to slip into america unnoticed has plummeted so drastically in recent years, it is now likely that more native-born mexicans are leaving the u.s. to go home that are trying to come here. at least, that is the startling finding of a new analysis of u.s. and mexican census data, arrest records and interviews by the pew hispanic center. jeff laselle led the search. >> we've actually seen the population from mexico living here shrinking over the last

i want to bring in tom foreman to talk about the numbers and the stories behind them. down these numbers for us. >> this was a trend that demographers saw for a long time. this is where we stood in 2010. 49.5% of the population, this is the minority number, the collective minorities, all of the folks out there who are asian and hispanic and black and mixed race. that was the total number. now it's at 50.4%. another way of looking at it is a 1% change, and right now the white population in terms of the country, in terms of those less than 1 year old, is about 49.6%. important to note that we are talking about births in the country. this is not the overall population right now where the whites still hold a bigger majority, but the bigger majority they hold is also an older majority. so let's look at why this has happened. first of all, for the past 30 years, as everyone knows, there's been a massive immigration from mexico. some of it legal, some of it illegal, but a lot of people coming over the border. that notably has basically stopped now because of the economy and be

tomorrow foreman is taking us inside all of these numbers. tom, there's more than meets theite. >> it's interesting to see people speaking to young people. maybe they've had already 25% unemployment rate for young people in this country. let's look at the big difference. the white house would like you to look at this, 8.1%, down 0.1%. that doesn't keep up with how many people are entering the job market, so when you're creating that many jobs, you're losing ground. so if that's true, how can this be going down? the reason has to do with the monthly survey that the federal government does. they call about 60,000 families, talk to the people, and establish who is employed, who is unemployed, mean they would like a job, and they're looking for a job action and who is out of workforce. the problem right now is that this group down here is growing. we talked about more than the 100,000 jobs created in this last survey. more than 300,000 people dropped out, said they're no longer looking. maybe they went back to school, it doesn't matter. they're out o
