tracie potts is live on capitol hill this morning and tracie, i guess the question is will deals be in place by day's end? >> we certainly hope so. the plan is to have a vote by day's end of course the plan was to maybe have a vote last night and that didn't work. we're talking about a couple of separate issues here. first of all, student loans. that's a big one. they will double as of sunday if congress does not get this done. the rate 3.4%, it would be twice that for new loans after sunday. it's going to cost $6 billion to keep the rate low. they are working on hiking pension insurance to do that. they are going to roll it in with the transportation bill because they are going to use the same funding mechanism to try to come wake-up $100 billion to save or create construction jobs. this is the bill that includes the gas tax that will expire if in fact they don't get this done. and federal flood insurance, by the way, is going to be renewed in this as well. so looks like they have a deal to wrap all three together and likely enough votes to make it happen. the other thing congress has

nbc's tracie potts is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning. >> three top executives lost their jobs over that. dimon is still on the job and facing tough questions from lawmakers about how all this happened. dimon has been talking about it a lot. previously on "meet the press" he told nbc this was an egregious mistake, a terrible mistake, no excuse for it that they missed the warnings and the red flags. in today's prepared testimony, we got an early look at that. he emphasized that no clients or taxpayers actually lost money and that moving forward, new leadership and new safeguards in place against this risky type of behavior and emphasizes that the company is healthy and has plenty of money to move forward. but congress will have a lot of questions. how did this happen? why did this happen and perhaps most importantly, do we need tougher regulation and even stronger vulker rule to prevent this type of speculation. dimon has said that the government already has the power under that rule to bring down banks, if necessary. also, w

nbc's tracie potts is live on capitol hill with more on this. good morning. >> good morning.e's how the l.a. sheriff's office says it went down. this was saturday evening in california. he was out there because earlier a couple days earlier he gave a commencement speech at his daughter's alma mater. on saturday they believe he ran into a car with three people as that car was sitting waiting for a train to pass by. apparently according to the report, he got out and talked with them about exchanging information but then according to one lieutenant seemed confused, got back into his car and backed into them again as he took off. that car then followed him, called 911. meantime, about five minutes later, about two miles up the road, the l.a. sheriff's office says he hit another car with a man and woman inside. they had no serious injuries. refused treatment. no serious injuries at the first accident either. but by the time authorities caught up with him, they say that he was unconscious behind the wheel. he was taken to the hospital. not arrested there but issued a felony citatio

tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. right now to tell us which positions employers are having a hard time filling. tracie, good morning. >> it is interesting, isn't it that as millions of americans are looking for jobs, thousands of employers are saying we've got them and can't find people to fill them. a brand new survey from the manpower group, a staffing agency, they asked 1300 employers are you having trouble finding people to fill these jobs? and almost half, 49% of them said we sure are. we can't find the right people for the right job. they said that either they have a lack of applicants or the applicants don't have the right experience. sometimes they want too much money. the top ten hardest jobs to fill include skilled trades, engineers, i.t. staff, sales reps, accounting, and finance. and then drivers, mechanics, nurses, machinists, and teachers, many of whom have lost their jobs in california and other parts of the country in the last several years. now, some of these employers say they're going out for colleg

nbc's twrasee potts joins us live from washington for more on this. tracie, good morning. >> lynn, good morning. washington hasn't done anything yet, but really needs to act on these expiring bush tax cuts. it's expiring at the end of the year. but congress doesn't do anything essentially this means taxes will go up for families and businesses already struggling in a tough economy. he's hopeful we'll see moderate growth this year, but federal reserve chair ben bernanke tells lawmakers if the u.s. is approaching a fiscal cliff, the fed can help but only congress can prevent a free-fall. >> i'd be much more comfortable if, in fact, you know, congress would take some of this burden from us and address those issues. >> that almost looks like what i want. >> reporter: part of that cliff, student loan rates set to double july 1st if congress doesn't act. >> don't be surprised, you know, two weeks from graduation you look up, and wham, you just got hit upside the head. >> reporter: president obama called congress stubborn, republicans criticized him for courting yo
