ellicott city is a railroad town. look what happened. >> they can never remember anything like this. this happened a few miles west of here, a few miles east. a lot of people said they were taken by surprise. 21 cars and an 80-car train flipping over. they're dumping the cars out. they will put it in a pile and get it out. they want to get the track back open and get things back to normal. a lot of folks had a lot of problems trying to deal with this. we spoke with some folks that live in the neighborhood. they've never heard of anything like this. they thought it was an earthquake. here's what they said. >> i was getting a glass of water. the train goes by a couple times a day. this time it was so loud. it was screeching and the table that i was near was kind of shaking. it was unreal. i figured that it derailed. >> it sounded like gunshots going off and the house was shaking. i didn't know what it was. i can look down at a point of view where i could see everything falling over. that's when i knew this was mass mayhem. >

a traine looking at derailment in ellicott city. good afternoon. i'm jennifer franciotti. two people have died, and the ntsb is now at the scene. we begin with lowell melser of live at the scene. >> as you can imagine, this is an active scene, and will remain so for quite some time. to let you know where we are, this accident just happened off of main street. i am counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 coal cars on the side here. in the front, locomotives, where we saw engineers looking over those. 21 cars in all unfortunate. , there were two victims of the crash, and they have been identified as 19-year-old elizabeth nass, a student at jmu, and rose mayr, a student at the university of delaware did invest a ghost don't know what they were doing by the tracks, and if they were -- investigators don't know what they were doing by the tracks, and if they were hit by the train. the train derailed as it came to an elected city in the main street area. 2130 cars came off the track and some of them fell 20 feet off of a bridge. one neighbor described the horrifying scene as it unfolded. >> i was

kristin fisher is live in ellicott city this morning. she's looking for answers as are investigators. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, mike. there's really two things going on here this morning. this massive cleanup effort and this ongoing ntsb investigation into exactly what happened here in this train derailment. this cleanup effort has been going through the night just this barricade on main street is where all of these 21 rail cars overturned. the coal spilling out just everywhere. it's huge mess. the cleanup is expected to take several days. main street here is expected to be closed at least through today, probably tomorrow. this ongoing investigation is also expected to take several days, maybe even weeks. what we know as of now is that 21 of 80 rail cars derailed right around midnight yesterday crushing cars. it damaged parts of downtown spilling coal everywhere. and of course it killed these two teenage girls who were sitting on a bridge right near the tracks. the big question has been did their presence near the

looking great early this morning. no issues to report on our major thoroughfares headed to the beltway. but there was an overnight deadly cargo train derailment up in old town ellicott city. right now that is blocking frederick road. i'm going to show what you it looks like first from our live shot. our kevin king is up at the scene here. frederick road is closed between westchester and columbia pike. and because of the seriousness of the situation and what happened there, 23 of the 80 cars derailed. they were carrying coal. the cleanup will take all day and therefore authorities there are telling us that frederick road is closed between westchester and columbia pike. i'll be back with more traffic coming up in my next report in a few minutes. back to you guys. >>> the prince george's county police department is mourning the loss of a young officer and as they grieve, investigators are looking for two suspects. >> the same to people officer adrian morris was chasing when his patrol car crashed. jessica doyle is live at police headquarters in palmer park with the latest on the story. good morning, jess. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. this is a huge loss for the
