i take the van ness underground and walk the corridor from octavia to van ness almost every day. and a lot of thoughts. going back to what commissioner antonini was talking about i was in europe and my experience is different. from are membership car tree boulevards that are thriving and violates. transit runs through them. you have areas where there's basically preves where the train runs through it. they don't have to have separations and it works peacefully. there's bicycle tracks that go through. those areas are vibrant and interesting. one of the things that's going to be important is looking at design principles we put in place for buildings

what frustrates me walking down market street particularly from octavia to van ness is the obscured ground floor locations and i think that enforcement abilityd working with property owners along that corridor to really liven those ground floors will help a lot with eyes on the street and kind of the more feeling of the access to the street. the other thing, in terms of street furniture i think there's much more need for street furniture along that corridor for place for people to sit. people already sitting but they're sitting on the street because there's no place to sit. so looking at making sure not only just the portion from van ness to embarcadero but those few block portions that there are adequate areas for that kind of activity and maybe even having like kiosks, like there's a little flower place, they don't have an ideal kiosk but how to have places where people could set up a coffee or flower boutique or something, how to build that into the plan. in terms of traffic, taking cars off, i'm very much in support of taking cars off market. i'm not sure why there's ability to turn be

the first meeting will be on tuesday, october 23, at 2:00 pm at 1 south van ness. the public is welcome. what the committee plans to do is review existing state and local walls that govern placards in blue zones and make recommendations for either new policies or laws. some of the numbers that are behind this ert are that san francisco has 29,200 metered on street parking spaces and 53,500 disabled parking placards. now, a parking placard, of course, allows you to park in a blue zone but many people who use placards also use them to park on the street and they can legally park in a green zone or at a metered spot without feeding the meter. but there is a problem that has been at least broadcast in the media of late. so if we set placards aside for a moment, i think everybody who's tried to park in san francisco knows it's really hard to find a spot. we're all in competition. and this is one of the reasons why our city supports having public transit and other modes of transportation like walking or biking. but for people who have a mobility disability, some of those

one thing to note is vehicles used on the van ness rftb will be included here, they're asterisked here we will purchase 15 60 foot hybrid motor coaches and 23 60 foot trolley motor coaches. there is the lines that run the different type vehicles, we will need to make two procurements to operator the van ness scheduled project. this is shown to come in sometime in 2014. this gives you a little sense where the funding for those procurements come from. this is specifically for the upcoming procurement of 57 vehicles that was mentioned on the previous slide. so typically you have the -- how these are funded is we receive federal grants because of limitations on amount of funding available within the region, so we also have to bank together several years of federal grants, then come in for prop k as the match. the other difference in this funding plan is we were successful in getting an fta discretionary grant for state of repair needs. this will specifically be used to replace the fairly old buses running on the annex today, they will have new vehicles that they can provide that service. s

most recently, just late last night, early in the morning in fact, there was a shooting on south van ness. and i want to commend the police department because following the shooting there was an arrest made and an indication of the fact that some of the measures and steps that have been taken are working. but the swiftness of the arrest, i think, sent a very clear message that we are serious about protecting our residents and that anyone who engages in criminal activity will have to deal with law enforcement. we also believe in violence prevention and we want to thank the community, including groups like the crn and the mission peace collaborative who have come together so that the community itself also takes its steps because the fact is that law enforcement cannot do it alone. so, we will continue to monitor the situation. the city will continue to invest whatever resources are needed to protect our citizens. and we as a community and the mission need to come together to ensure the safety of our residents. the last point i'd like to address is something that happened not only in the mis
