one of the people who made the trek from virginia, the state capitol in virginia was henry marsh, a state democratic senator from virginia. in his official biography, senator marsh talks about walking miles to a one-room school in coastal virginia when he was growing up, and the yellow school bus filled with white school children passing him on the way to their new building. henry marsh grew up to be a civil rights lawyer. he worked for the independent congratulation of schools. in 1977, he became the first african-american mayor of richmond, virginia. he has served in the virginia state senate since 1992. only two active senators have served in that chamber longer than he has. senator marsh wanted to see the inauguration of this president on martin luther king day. mr. marsh is 79 years old. it seems unlikely that there will be an inauguration quite like this again any time soon. so for a day, henry marsh left behind the virginia state senate. the virginia state senate i should tell you stands at an even 20-20. it is equally divided, half republicans and half democrats. 20 on one side, 2

by february 26th, less than two weeks after the uproar started over virginia's bill, alabama's governorbert bentley was asked about the very similar forced ultrasound bill pending in his state. the very next day after the governor was asked on february 27th, the republican sponsor of that bill in alabama suddenly backed away from it, saying he was going to rewrite the bill to remove the vaginal probe requirement. that bill, vaginal probe or not, ended up going nowhere in alabama. on march 1st, 16 days after the virginia outcry started up, the republican house leader in pennsylvania started to back away from his state's forced ultrasound bill that was pending there. canceled debate on the measure, announced that the bill wouldn't be considered in the pennsylvania house any time soon. by march 21st, it was republicans in idaho who were getting so jumpy about their forced ultrasound bill that they canceled a hearing on the measure. six days later in idaho, their forced ultrasound bill was officially dead when a house committee chairman said he wouldn't allow hearing on the bill. and the an

there were a couple stays and motions across courtrooms in the state of virginia. the district court, the appellate court, even the u.s. supreme court. that circuit court granted a stay after the judge said prosecutors did not mean the 120-day deadline to retry wolfe after a judge discovered misconduct and vacated the 2002 sentence. now the federal judge ordered that wolfe would be released in ten days. today is the tenth day, but because the stay was granted justin wolfe will remain behind bars tonight. the appellate court plans to hear the entire case at the end of the month. reporting live from prince william county, seth lemmon, news4. >>> the 113th congress is now in session. as required by law, the new congress convened on capitol hill at noon today. ohio congressman john boehner was reelected to a second term as speaker of the house without the embarrassment of a second vote. it was a narrow victory after defections from most conservative members of the republican party. on the senate side, former virginia governor tim kaine just took the oath of office along

virginia. we can't win it the way that it is. we have got to do these tricks to try to get back our advantage. that's incredible. because if you're losing virginia, for the presidency, you're losing. period. so i think that's an incredible thing to take note of. one other thing, the virginia republicans have been quite busy this week. on monday during the president's inauguration, civil rights icon in virginia, first african-american mayor of richmond and a state senator decided to attend the president's inauguration. and the republicans in the senate took advantage of his absence on mlk day, as well, to push through a partisan gerrymandered version of the state senate districts. they made all the democratic districts worse and they really targeting deeds the gubernatorial nominee last time ago who represents a rural district and if this new map becomes law, would actually lose his seat because of this. so they're really doing everything they can to sort of game the system in virginia. >> well, you know, i think a couple of things

they got 6 1/2 inches around the virginia tech area. so a lot of snow in southwestern virginia and through southern and central virginia, not in our direction. the whole thing is pulling out. let's start with radar. here's d.c. at 41 degrees. there goes our precipitation, but check it out, eastern shore, are you seeing a little snow? our radar suggests it may have changed over and is in the process of doing that even for rehoboth beach and ocean city and perhaps here for lower st. mary's and the northern neck of virginia as this pulls out in the next couple hours. advisories will be getting dropped. over to sentinel radar composite picture which shows a lot more precipitation, but you get the general sense the snow is south and a back edge is indeed beginning to show up through southwestern virginia. i know the snow is reportedly over in charlottesville and this storm system spinning down here will produce snow for hampton roads, very heavy rain feeding in, briefly very heavy snow down there, although we're thinking a lot of that will me

last night we reported on related news out of the state of virginia, the virginia state senate. virginia republicans waited until this one particular democratic senator, a noted civil rights lawyer named henry marsh, they waited until senator marsh left town on monday for the day to go to the inauguration of president obama. virginia republicans had to wait until he was gone because the state senate is equally divided in virginia, 20 republicans and 20 democrats. but with henry marsh gone for the day, it's no longer an even divide, right? it's 20-19. with that advantage, republicans decided to spring on the senate and spring on the entire state a whole new set of redmaps. a whole new set of gerrymandered maps for the state, drafted to put republicans in charge in virginia effectively permanently. because they did it when henry marsh was away, republicans succeeded in this plan by one vote in their stealth attack to change the maps. that one vote was the missing vote of the senator who had gone to the inauguration. that's how they started the week. now virginia republicans are mov
