even erskin bowles, they're asking for the left to give even more here. i guess the big question, do you think this even has a fighting chance? >> well, first of all i think it is important to reference their involvement. that they're trying to re-engage congress, they're on hiatus. not only literally on hiatus with a vacation but they checked out when it comes to address the real issue. we need obviously to get our debt and did he sit under control as we all know. there is no effort to work in a truly bipartisan manner. the president has not reached out to the moderates on the republican side. i commend them for re-engaging. they're working with save the debt or reduce the debt committee. this is a n group that's been formed. so there are some things certainly i think we can find common ground. but i'm not hopeful that anyone is going to throw away their arrows yet and get together and hammer things out. it is very, very frustrating down there. sandra: senator, as you were speaking we were looking over some of the guidenes of this new plan. it cuts $600

we have alan simpson and erskine bowles.t by asking you about some news that that's happened today. the economy adding 157,000 jobs in the month of january. upward revisions for november and december and the stock market has been fluctuating up and above 14,000. what do those two facts tell you, if anything, about the state of our economy and what we need in terms of deficit reduction? >> in my opinion, i was much more infused about the revisions to last month. but in and the month before that. i think we are seeing the economy buffer along at about a 2% growth rate. i think to really get the economy moving again, we have to have a long term plan to fix this fiscal problem we have. i think that will restore confidence, you know, if you look at consumer confidence, it is still pretty far down. i think we got to see a plan that will fix our long-term deficit problem. we do that, i think we could have really great growth. >> senator, if the dow sets a new record, it was in october of 2007, that it was last at levels of this kin

and from that conversation earlier that i had with alan simpson and erskine bowles, i heard from them white house thinks we don't need as many cuts as simpson and bowles do and the president is saying no more revenue, and simpson and bowles saying, no, we need more revenue. today they even set a bar higher than they had in their commission report for additional deficit reduction. i asked them how can you ask for more when we haven't even gotten what you originally recommended. here's how they responded. >> well, we learned the hard way with our commission. the tougher we made it, the more support we got. either go big or go only home. >> we're going to have to push the white house on health care, we're going to have to push the republicans on revenue. >> go big or go home, that's their mantra. we'll see whether congress or the administration can go big because at the moment they're going home. >> how long can the president make this claim that the republicans aren't compromising when a lot of them argued we just finished compromising at the end of last year. and, b, how long can he wo

. >> it's interesting that you bring up the grand bargain because erskine bowles. one of the take-aways was erskine bowles saying the idea of a grand bargain is at best on life support. this is a little bit of sound from "the daily rundown" where they also made appearances. take a listen. >> the truth is both camps have got to get out of their comfort zone and they've got to make these tough decisions. they made the easy ones. now they got to make the tough ones. >> are we any closer to any tough decisions being made? >> well, what's funny is that we are like 80% of the way to what they wanted to begin with. we've already made more than $2 trillion worth of cuts and raised, you know, close to $1 trillion in revenue. we're within spitting distance of this -- of it being sustainable, where there's more growth, there is growth and growth in the deficit. you would think that that would change the posture of people like simpson bowles, but they keep going to this. >> to get to $2 trillion, you have to sequester. it assumes we're going to achieve these cuts over the next
