thank you for joining us. i want to bring up mayor lee so she can bring up the announcements of the honorees for today. apl(applause) >> thank you emily and thank you to the commission on the status of women to our human rights commission thank you for being here and the commissioners and staff as well. thank you police chief for being here and certainly all the other department heads. wendy thank you for being here as well. members of the community. advocacy groups that have been so important to this movement. supervisor carmen chu, i know you and mayor newsom had this initial effort back some years ago to recognize the need to abolish human trafficking. an san francisco being such an international city, many of our roots are from immigrant families. we understand the problem. we did do something about it and continue that effort. i want to thank the us attorney's office for being here. and so many of you who have from the community done and continue to do what you can do to end human trafficking. this is such

i want to thank hud. i mean, hud can be harsh, but they can also be a great partner when you get them on your side. and our d.c. office as well as our san francisco office, the hud officials are to be praised for supporting this vision. because hope sf came out of the hope 6 projects. and this was naturally led -- they started these projects as early as areas in portland and seattle and chicago. and we looked -- we sent our staffs out there and we felt that promise was may rebut what i did back here. this is a great vision and something that i will be glad to not only engage in and support enthusiastically. we have dcyf, maria sue is here and she's got all of the great training programs. along with our director of work force housing. i saw rhonda simmons and her team. we've got a lot of different agencies engaged in here so that nobody sees us as just the physical part of the buildings going up. we've got lives. these kids want to be here. they see this as their long-term place. they're part of a community

neugebauer: i thank the gentleman. i think the point that you make is extremely important about our families. as members of congress we get an opportunity in many occasions to travel to the theater and to thank those men and women that are deployed and for their outstanding service to their country. i know that my colleagues also do the same thing i do and that is when you are around their families you understand, they understand this is a team sport and it's those families that support our military folks back home, keep the home front going while our men and women do the job that we ask them to do, it's an important part to making sure that america has a strong defense. i got an anonymous email of a person that wanted to express their thoughts about chris. he says, when veterans ask for help or wanted to meet with him, chris made time for them. when children needed him, he made time for them. the week before he died, his wife was marveling at how he could make time for so many different aspects of his work while making

so i want to thank supervisor chiu. i want it it thank him for his leadership and the leadership of our constant street leadership. they get a little economic bump. that was the year of the dragon that we wanted to do something bold. the year of the serpent is like the mini dragon. it is there to also continue that great experience, but also make sure that we're safe for everyone. and so i want to register that we're going to do this again beginning this saturday. it will go for a couple of weeks before the actual start of chinese new year's, which is february 10th, but that leading up to it, all the merchants and in particular the small businesss along stockton street will get that economic bump as we work with chinatown youth center and all the wonderful non-profits that keep everybody safe on our sidewalks and have that positive experience. this is a great time for the city to celebrate. of course we'll be there from february 10th leading up to the great parade that we have that invites thousands of people here. i kno

hoyer: i thank the gentleman. he said a lot and i could have a lot of comments on that but i will say this, as long as the gentleman believes it's only us saying that we need a balanced program, he will oppose it because we are democrats. if the gentleman listens to independent advice all over this country, from all sorts of sources, republicans and democrats, conservatives and liberals, they will say, you need a balanced approach. we need to cut spending, we need to restrain spending and we need to balance the cost of what we provide with the income that we have. every business person, small, medium and large, understands that concept. we have not followed it and we did not follow it in the last decade. i regret the fact that the gentleman doesn't like the president going around the country and telling the truth. saying what the consequences may well be. now, are they going to be on march 1? no, but will they inevitable occur if the sequester stays in place? the answer to that is an emphatic yes. so i think the pr

i want to thank spur. i know that the best ideas in city government do not come from the politicians. they come from all of you. i want to thank spur for helping to convene not just the smartest people in san francisco, but the smartest people from around the world to help us figure out how to innovate. it is my honor to introduce the first award thee of this evenin. this is a very unique award. this is the lifetime achievement award. mfac has to select one individual out of 26,000 who best exemplifies what service is to our city. when i was first elected to office, i asked a lot of people, literally hundreds of people, who is the smartest person in government. with all due respect to the other smart people in this room, there was one name that came up over and over again. that was our awardee. whenever i have a question that was difficult to answer, i would ask my staff, who are we going to call? the same name always came up. it was our awardee. i'm going to tell a story that has not yet been told publicly

i also want to thank the community for actually help with this issue. and i guess one of the comments i want to make and i'll be sporting as it is sent back to committee. as i'm listening i understand the statute of woman support is necessary but what i feel has been silent in this and something for us to think about it's not just about legal services that we need to be concerned about. i was on the board several years and i saw domestic violence and even the organizations that deal with children particularly there is no resources were a lot of times the people's were caught in the middle of the two parties. so as we move forward we need to provide some resources for those types of services and supported them because those are the organizations that are dealing with the items. >> thank you. i want to make a comments i do support the underlying speak up i supplemental that is before us today that cute of the budget committee today but i think it should go back to the budget economy. it was such a short time we have to spend the fund i have no doubt there
