claudine wong is live with more about a news conference which just wrapped up in boston. claudine? >> reporter: that's right, it just wrapped up in last ten minutes but those patients, things are getting better. initially they had 10 critically injured but the number of critical is now at 2. one patient is a five-year-old boy, the other man in his 60s and there are still 10? serious condition and seven in fair condition. but the chief trauma surgeon said they will all survive. they range in age up to 78 years old. they completed life saving surgery which included amputations and they are now trying to prevent infections and they still have not had their wounds closed and the trauma surgeon is now trying to address posttraumatic stress disorder. authorities believed the bombs were put in two identical pressure cookers with shrapnel. they show the twisted metal are remnants of those pressure cookers that were packed with explosives and they show pictures of a battery and a small circuit board with wires and you can see it's on your screen and all of that evidence has been sent to an

ktvu claudine wong is in our newsroom now. we have live pictures there claudine. i know you are watching all of the latest developments. what can you tell us? >> they are focusing in on that area. they also focused in on a reported vehicle that may be heading to the manhattan area. all of this information is coming this. and when you talk about a wide area they are talking about the entire boston metro area from watertown, massachusetts and the surrounding communities it's really a race to keep up with all of the information coming in. you have upwards of 10,000 officers. you have state police you can see on your screen there and you have every agency and feds out there trying to make sure that they track down this man they consider armed and dangerous. the one thing they have asked cameras to do and we expect the video to change is that they have asked the media boston police specifically they say do not show our tactical positions. we do not want the suspect what we are doing, where we are because it would compromise the safety of the officers. i know from cover

ktvu's claudine wong was at this morning's press conference and i just us live. have engineers -- and joins us live. have engineers decided how to deal with these flawed bolts? >> reporter: they are looking at two options on the table. that in a minute. but first, we want to give you a look at the new span and the problem area. if we zoom on in, we can show you what's known as the e-2 pier, the bolts are there that broke and they secure the roadway to the pier. it's part of the seismic safety design of this new bridge. weeks after those three dozen bolts broke, testing has now confirmed high trojan is to blame -- mitral again is to blame -- hydrogen is to blame. engineers haven't decided yet which is the better. >> both options are, again, well achieved. the design and intent of this system. >> reporter: while they analyze those options, they are looking at the other bolts on the bridge. the bolts that broke came in a 2008 shipment. but there was another shipment in 2010 by the same manufacturer. no problems with knows as of now. but it's still unclear if those s

claudine wong has more on the newly released crime scene photos and a plea from law enforcement. >> reporter: we are known to take pictures not just before but during and after and police say somebody knows who is responsible for this attack and we should tell you within the last half hour we got new information from cnn who said a lid from a pressure cooker was found on the roof near the scene. also these photos were shown overnight, you can see twisted metal which was believed to come from a pressure cooker remember they were packed with explosives and there were other pictures which showed not only that twisted metal but also a series of wires and you can see -- wires and you can see how small that circuit board is and beyond that, there are batteries and those are the types of things they are looking at right now and all of that evidence has been sent to an fbi lab. >> it was determined that both explosives were raised in a dark colored nylon back pass epack -- backpack or bag. >> and we have more information on the chinese graduate student who was killed in the blast. china has identifi

i'm claudine wong in for tori campbell. >>> topping our news this morning -- the new bay bridge, engineers say they think they now hoe to fix the -- know how to fix the broken bolts. about you there's a catch. this could delay the opening of the bridge. caltrans met with the metropolitan transportation commission. brian flores was there and will tell us what was said. >> reporter: good afternoon. as work continues on the bay bridge, there's still concern of about 30 or more bolts that were installed earlier this year. while officials remain confident in the bridge, there's still questions on how some bolts snapped in the first place. bridge engineers gave a public update in front of the metropolitan transportation commission. at question, 30 bolts that became fractured. when they re-examined those bolts, they found bolt fractures. this morning, officials blame hydrogen which weakens the strength of the bolts but they told the commission they don't know where it came from. >> it could have come from the manufacturing process. it could have come from the fact the bolt locations were embedded

ktvu's claudine wong joining us live in the newsroom to tell us more about it and what can be heard onse calls. >> the 911 call lasted for 21 minutes. it was made by karen and jim reynolds after doeferper tied them -- dorner tied them up. karen was able to free herself up enough to get her cell phone and their condo is located right along the command center that was set up. karen reynolds said she believed dorner had been there the entire time. >> you guys were tied up? >> yes. tied up. >> okay. >> how long ago did he leave? 15 minutes to a half-hour. >> now, the couple said they ran into dorner when they came to the cabin to clean it. he tied them up, held them at gunpoint and stole their truck. dorner is accused of killing four people including two police officers and wounding three other officers in one of the largest manhunts in l.a.p.d. history. hours after that 911 call was made. police cornered dorner, he died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. back to you. >> thank you. >>> police say a 19-year-old man working to improve his life is the latest victim of gun violence
