three years ago i was happy to work with mayor newsome to pass our city's first open data ordinance and at that point we were a national leader in the open data movement. unfortunately we have fallen a bit behind. at this time we have about 500 city maintained data sets, but there are literally thousands of data sets that we could put out to the public. we have known in recent years that the release of government data and improved partnership between government and citizens has led to many successes at improving government. we know this is good for open government. this is to help provide more information to the press, to the public, and really ensure that as we analyze our government data, this is leading to innovations throughout our communities. i want to just take a moment because some of our colleagues have asked me, what type of data are we talking about? let me give three examples of things that i think we could really move forward on. first has to do with rec and park. four years ago the very first meeting i had with now director phil beginsberg, i asked him when the city was go

we have a huge problem in our city with cigarette litter. we found that through our litter audits that we have done, we have a higher rate of cigarette litter in our cities compared to other cities in canada. expanded again in 2010 to include needle disposal and i said in the other session, this is what i am escaping from in edmonton right now. yay, san francisco. so we have a snow angel program where we ask citizens to voluntarily shovel the snow off their neighbor's lawns. so these are all the programs offered by the capital city clean up program. we started in 2005 as part of the waste management branch and this past year in 2012 we were moved to the community standards branch which is where we are housed now. so we have a very strong link with our programs between the programs that we offer and the community standards or community bylaw ordinances that we're operating under. the lation that we focus in on is 14614, that is the bylaw that governs litter pick up in the city. community standards 146400 is the graffiti standards bylaw. our by

for those of you who have not heard, she has been embedded in the history of our city and particular the city of the struggles of the chinese-american community. she came to seven cisco 1949 as a young immigrant; she graduated from galileo high school. she joined the chinese-american democratic youth league, at progressive organization within the chinese american community. i know it is hard for us to appreciate this today but at that time, chinese-american organizations were subjected to surveillance and harassment of the federal government, by the fbi as well elements of the chinese american community. laura has been and was a heroine in furthering these causes in the fight. ever since those days she has continued to engage in progressive causes and community service. she has been involved in significant groundbreaking research into chinese-american history. as an aside, she supported her late husband mark li, after whom the chinatown branch library is named. laura's name also adorns the heart of research and learning. i wonder -- i want to thank laura for generously donating time m

[ applause ] . the next person that i would like to introduce is supervisor david campos. we talked about 40 hours of meetings but we didn't talk about the hours and hours of telephone calls and constituent meetings and i would say these fellows put out about over 200 hours in the process. david has been an incredible champion for this campus in particular for saint luke's and the need for this area. i didn't know david before i came to this proces
this is what matter for our city. we have an agreement that protects our financial agreement as a city and we have also learned so much in this process and we are going to continue to keep our city our eye on the ball and make sure we have a secure city. and to thank people around the podium here for different city departments, barbara garcia i , to all of our trade members, to the community coalition, to vince from the alliance, this has been a group effort and a group supporting us today. i...
