shots fired on capitol hill. athena jones is up on capitol hill.ou heard those shots, athena, as well. where are you now? >> right now, i'm in russell rotunda. this is a familiar place. you have seen us do live shots from here, live interviews from here. i happened to step out on the balcony a few feet from the camera and hurt the shots fired. it sounded to me, i wasn't sure they were shots. they sounded like loud firecrackers. a few in rapid succession. at the same time, the cars were rushing down, police cars. i saw about a dozen rush down constitution and park and congregate at the end, about two blocks away, closer to the supreme court, kind of right now we're across the street from the capitol, so we have constitution dividing us. i saw cars race down and park. at least one was a van-size. several other standard police cruisers and a lot of men in uniform, police in uniform getting out down at the other corner. that's all we have been able to see. we're in locktdown in this russell senate office building. i was trying to get out at one point a

alexander bolton is with the hill. are you there? >> yes. >> the emergency alert has announced they're lifting the shelter in place order on capitol hill. what do you see from your vantage point? >> well, people are huddled around televisions. the senate is in recess. they've suspended operations on the senate floor. people are trying to figure out what's going on. there's a lot of confusion, even among some of the capitol officers. there have been a couple reports. number one a shooting at 1st and constitution northwest. also reports of a shooting at 2nd and constitution northeast. the capitol police reacted very quickly. they scrambled to lock the doors down and to lock offices and to tell the capitol hill workers and staffers to move to the innermost parts of the office, to grab a cape hood if ner necessary, and to get away from windows and doors. >> we've been told they've lifted the shelter in place order on the capitol. let's go to kelly o'donnell. kelly, what are you seeing where you are right now? >> that's right, tamron. we'

we get more stories from the witnesses on the hill. pat collins joins us with more on that part of the story. pat? >> reporter: sources tell news 4, again, that woman suspect in the car is dead. sources tell us she was shot in the neck by police during this confrontation. sources tell us she has a connecticut drivers license that she was born in 1979, which would make her about 34 years old. again, as we reported before, there was a baby in the car between the age of one year and 18 months. a baby was in the car during this whole incident, during all that gunfire. we are told investigators are looking into the possibility this woman had mental health issues in connecticut. they are trying to investigate her past. they are trying to figure out what brought her to washington for this deadly confrontation. now, let's take a look at some video here from comcast sports with greg. you are going to see video or people ducking for cover. they are lying on steps. they are going into bushes as the guns are fired here up on near the u.s. capitol.

it's a quieter day on capitol hill. first of all, where were you during all this and what are your recollections of this insanity on capitol hill today? >> i was walking down the hall immediately adjacent to the senate floor. one of the guards pulled me into the senate floor and said, senator, you need to come to the floor. we're going to lock down. there were shots fired. i went to the floor until it was safe to move about. i think my impressions as a former prosecutor, i'm very much in awe of the professional job our police did yesterday. there was no loss of life, other than the person who caused this very dangerous situation. the child is fine. our police officers have all survived. in the long run we really were inconvenienced for a relatively short period of time considering how reckless and dangerous obviously this mentally ill person was. >> there are questions being raised by some, and we all admire the capitol police, about whether having been so close to her, and the pictures bear that out, with their guns dr

we're still waiting to hear from capitol hill police. this all went down about two hours, 20 minutes ago. a woman tried to ram the southeast gates, parallel with the south line of the white house, a wide area around the white house that has now gotten wider and wider over the years post the oklahoma bombing in 18995 and then the first world trade center attack in 1996 and then the followup one in 2001 -- i should say '93 and 2001. so, by each terror incident they have widened the area around the white house that is inaccessible to regular passenger traffic, including right in front of the white house of pennsylvania of enough itself. it's just regular ambulatory traffic, people can walk by but no one can drive. we're told this woman tried to ram through a security checkpoint and then when the authorities at the scene were trying to tell her, get out of the car now, she simply turned around. this is by the capitol, long past her time when she was at the white house, some this is garfield circling on the side of the capital, she was chase

i saw capitol hill police cars engage in some kind of chase. i saw them chasing something over towards constitution avenue, which is the senate side, and that is where apparently this standoff occurred and where this woman was shot and killed. what i can report is the sergeant of arms said the baby is believed to be fine. the capitol hill police officer who was medevacked out of here from a park police helicopter which actually, martin, landed on the west front. today we saw a park police helicopter medevac a capitol hill police officer off the mall. that was an extraordinary thing to witness. i will also say to you, martin, that the business of the house of representatives, the house went into immediate recess around 2:30 p.m. we were all told to shelter in place. no one was allowed to leave the capitol building or any of the office buildings, and this incident for roughly an hour did close the people's house, the business of the people. legislation was not being debated, legislation did not go through. that was lifted around 3:30 and the memb

i got over as fast as i could from capitol hill. i probably made it with my producer who i was running with kimberly, in two minutes. when we got to dirkson, everything was completely shut down. the pa announcement to shelter in place was echoing through these long alley ways between the buildings. at one point an officer when i tried to get closer to the police tape, about 50 yards from the first police tape that went up, an officer ran toward me with a big gun and said i was not safe being where i was. there was a small handful of other people at appointments at the the senate office building. we all kind of moved behind a corner of the building. it's important you hear everybody talking about the heroic work of capitol hill police here now securing the scene. you can see they're looking at evidence markers. none of these officers including those that engaged the suspect are being paid now because of the government shutdown. >> the security is intense around the capitol and white house. people will ask why didn't they shoot out th

new developments in the chaos on capitol hill.ight now investigators are trying to figure out what led to a high-speed chase and police shooting that had capitol hill on lockdown. police say women tried to hit a barricade near the white house leading police on a chase up to capitol hill where things would come to a violent end. news 4's megan mcgrath is on capitol hill with the latest. meg megan? >> reporter: well, eun, this was a pretty wild chase and ultimately ended in the death of the driver and at times hit speeds of 80 miles an hour through the streets of washington. if you can imagine that in the middle of the day. a little after 2:00 when the events began to unfold, so there were plenty of people around, folks up here on capitol hill. tourists in the area were able to capture these images. you can see people hitting the deck when they hear gunfire and the chaos that was ensuing as this chase progressed through the streets of washington. now it all started at one of the outer perimeter security checkpoints at the white hous

when that incident started and as she made her way down to capitol hill, they did put the hill on lockdownin the house and the senate were given a shelter in place order, which meant that they had to move to the interior portions of their offices or seek shelter in an area that was not exposed to outside windows and outside doors. that was lifted shortly after police engaged with the suspect. now, we heard from u.s. capitol hill police spokesman chris dines that he did not know the status of the suspect. however, the sergeant at arms said to nbc news pete williams and luke russert that the suspect had been shot and killed. so we're looking forward to more clarification of that particular part of the story from chief dynes when he comes to the microphone. the woman reportedly had a child in the car. that's what luke russert is reporting. that was confirmed by chief dynes. however, we don't know the status of the child. we don't know the age of the child. by status i mean medical status of the child. police say they have stabilized the incident at this point. the lockdown was lifted at 3:30

a very tense afternoon unfolding on capitol hill. and a notice went out from the capitol police advising everyone by email. this is the notice, to close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows. the notice says that gunshots have been reported on capitol hill there are unconfirmed reports of an officer injured as you heard from jeff zellany a short time ago. i want to bring in our senior justice correspondent, pierre thomas who joins us on the telephone. this is a quick-moving investigation, pierre. >> that's right, david. we just heard from law enforcement sources. we're being told that the fbi, atf and all law enforcement officers are responding to the capit capitol. based on reports of a car chase and shots fired. we also are getting some guidance from sources that a suspect may have been shot. and may be neutralized at the scene. we're trying to get additional information on that. but the information is that the car chase ended in the confrontation and that the suspect, female, described to us by our sources as a femal

we are hearing that oakland hills -- we are here in the oakland hills. cars are having to navigate around these two fallen limbs. there is toppled trees up and down this street. city worker showed up a half hour ago. he said it may be some time before crews get to these branches. now for spotlights above 1,000 feet in the east bay hills and diablo range we have that red flag warning in effect. just down the road northbound the planes are completely blocked by a large fallen tree. crews will be here chopping it up and taking it away. they are trying to get it clear before classes start. firefighters were busy overnight. high winds toppled trees. pg&e had to cut power while fire crews snuffed out the flames. now fire officials say they want people to call 911 immediately if you see smoke. if something sparks it could go up quickly. the wind gusts are supposed to be in the opposite direction of where they are normally. we have seen a lot of cars going down the roadway. it is going to be quite some time. they will be spending quite some time chopping up that

we are in the oakland hills and they are nervous in the oakland hills about fire. >> they are indeed and the oakland fire department is on high alert tonight. this is why. there's a lot of stuff all around the bay area. and it's really dry. and if tomorrow is anything like today, fire departments throughout the bay area will have their hands full. >> reporter: tonight, oakland fire trucks were on patrol in the hills. >> there was a lot of concern in the hills today. even though we had patrols, there were a lot of people that smelled the smoke that was coming from the 8:00 alarm fire. >> reporter: that fast moving fire charred more than 1,000 acres, from our chopper, you can see a herd of cows running from the flames. the fast moving fire went to 8-alarm. firefighters battled the fire from the air and on the ground. two hours after that, there was another fire on highway 780 and east fifth street. paul said he was first on the scene. >> we pulled over quickly and by the time i called 911 and i looked back up and the thing went right up in flames. >> i was standing in the back in our b
