you know i wrote in my column they don't reform anything, senator bernie sanders, socialist from vermont, wrote to the head of the nsa saying are you spying on congress? the answer was, are you ready for this? congress gets the same constitutional protections as the rest of the united states, which is to say none. in the real world that would have triggered massive investigations and probably a cutback of the nsa's budget. this gets to your question, members of congress are either afraid of what the nsa knows about them, or they want to give the impression to the american public that they are doing something. the something they are doing to keep us safe is spying on us. guess what? all four groups said the spying doesn't keep us safe. it gives us a false impression. >> a direct quote from the report that came out today. we have not identified a single instance involving a threat to the united states in which the telephone records program made a concrete difference in the outcome of a counter-terrorism investigation. >> the same thing was said by two federal judges who gave the nsa ample

let's bring in senator bernie sanders. good to have you with us tonight. >> good to be here. >> you've been on this topic on this program numerous times and finally the president of the united states is going to make this a central theme in the state of the union. what kind of an impact can this have? >> i think it's going to be huge. today, the top 1% owns 38% of the financial wealth of america. the bottom 60% own all of 2.3% of the wealth. one family, the walton family, owns more wealth than the bottom 40%. in recent years, 95% of all new income has gone to the top 1%. clearly the president has got to lay out a series of proposals that says, we've got to pay attention to the working families of this country. we have to address the crisis of unemployment, which means extending unemployment benefits, which means raising the minimum wage and creating a jobs program. and it means paying attention, so the government represents all of us and not just the big campaign contributors. >> what's the mission of the republicans, sena
