correspondent dan springer has the details from seattle. >> reporter: 56-year-old tom was shocked to find out he qualified for medicaid under obamacare. he was able to retire early years ago, owns his home outright in this pricey seattle area neighborhood and is living off his investment. he wanted no part of the government's so-called free health care. >> i did not want to be on medicaid because it's supposed to be a safety net program. it's not supposed to be for somebody who has assets that can pay the bill. i used to pay the bill. i didn't want money from the government for that. >> reporter: after reading the fine print, he had another reason to flee medicaid, the potential death debt. states are allowed to recover the cost of care after death by seizing assets. it's been the law since 1993 when states were going broke over rising medicaid expenses. but under obamacare medicaid eligibility has expanded. the asset test was thrown out allowing millions more to qualify, but like tom, others want out. dan springer joins us live from the seattle bureau. how is it going so far on this historic day?ter: heather, 34 stores across colorado are now selling pot legally as of about 20 minutes ago. there were predictions people would be camping out overnight, theit would be long lines this morning. that has not happened, still plenty of interest in how this instrument will play out. they pass legalize recreational marijuana in 2012, colorado was the first to have all the rules and regulations in place. washington expects to have sales this summer. the sellers in colorado had been medical marijuana dispensaries. eventually there can be 150 selling pot to people 21 years and older. those who have been pushing for this day for a long time say it is just the beginning. >> most americans now think marijuana should be legal for adults, and we're seeing states begin to consider these policies. lawmakers and voters from portland, oregon, to portland, maine, are watching what is happening in colorado thinking about passing some of their own laws. reporter: california is one of those states cons
