google. it is driving down the prices of ads. google says its cost per click was down 9% in the first quarter. paid clicks rose 26%. overall, google reported first-quarter revenue of $22 billion, up 11%, net income up 3%, and, in one other sign of concern, expenses climbed 23% in the quarter to more than $11 billion. google has been on position -- acquisition spree, pursuing some of its moon-shots. google stock is down in after-hours. scott coley is the chairman of ad exchange, and paul, your immediate reaction, cost per clicks are down, but clicks are up. is this all because of mobile? >> it is. google, like most other companies come is trying to manage his business from the desktop to the mobile environment. as the usage moves to mobile, two things happen. number one, the actual usage of the site goes up. as you mentioned, clicks were up 26% at google. the flipside of the coin is advertising pricing on mobile devices comes at a lower price point than the desktop. in the case of google, the cost per click pricing was down 9%. google, like a lot of media companies, needs to manage the pricing on the ads versus the actual number of

i think there is a side story were apple and google -- google change things up with the different share classes. apple is intensely competitive with googlein some ways, they are trying to juice up some of the returns. i could understand why someone would say this is un-apple like. i like the fact that tim cook is being aggressive in doing something like this. >> we do know that tim cook had a meeting with carl icahn. icahn backed down. he said that he agreed with apple's increased buyback and extremely pleased with the results. many analysts failed to understand the company. cory, i know you'll agree with the last part of the statement. do you think icahn knows more about the products that are coming than the rest of us? >> to back down or stop rattling his saber, his holding in the company. i think that is the point. is it un-apple like to not be a growth company? yeah. it is un-apple like to split the stock, going through a buyback. the increase in the buyback is the size of 3m. it is an incredible amount of it is a different kind of company than it has been in the past. >> we are getting some sound of what tim cook said on the call. l

google and their partners with android. at the core of what google is trying to do is to control every device. that is ultimately apple's goal. paths, googleakes a partnership approach and apple does it themselves. that is clearly the biggest risk. you will see some players pop up and down from time to time. the future is all about connected devices and the consistency of the devices in being able to control those devices. it will take big players to do that. apple and google are the two companies. aspires to do that at some point, but it is apple and google at this point. >> the numbers are looking good. when you hear what gene has to say, how do you see this playing out? openthink that is an question. that is the point. they're not introducing new products yet, but they could give new legs to the growth story. when you look at other businesses, businesses that are not doing well -- look at itunes. .tunes is falling like last fm and spotify growing fantastically. why is dropbox having such success and having people upload cloud files and the i continues to struggle? there are lot of failed efforts that apple could be doing better for a va

google thinks of this? specifically mentioned that apple and google are never going to do some the things they announced because a lot of what they did today was towards interoperability for people with google and android phones but may have an ipad or developers or trying to target people on a variety of platforms. what happened was in the web days, there were some basic things everybody could count on -- html, websites working the same no matter what platform you are on, but the mobile web is completely different. there are barricades all over the place. facebook was essentially trying to say, we're going to break down those barriers. ultimately, apple and google would probably prefer those barriers remain in place. they're probably not totally thrilled, but they would have never done this themselves. >> what about the audience network, this ad exchange. how does this look to you, how does this put facebook into the context of the biggest player in the room, which is google? >> to answer the second question first, i would say facebook is out in front of google on the ad products, particularly in the mobile realm? >> what about twitter? >> twitter is moving fast come up the scale and audie

google is on technology tear. google glass came out for the first time what do you think. >> liz, you pointed out the fact that google is a bellwether indicator of advertising spending and the ability to generate revenue from it so the miss definitely correlates with a slowdown in advertising or at least the slowdown of google the ability to profit from it. one way or the other it is not great news but net-net i think google is in a great position to grow through acquisitions and shore up whatever the current near term issues are impacting its bottom line. it is simply too ubiquitous to disappear down the sell be tube in any manner i think. liz: let me get to this before i rich edson asks another question. the paid clicks up but the cost per click down. paid clicks same quarter year over year up 26%. rich. rich: i want to get into migration going from regular pc, from internet browser into apps. we have, before we get to that, american express. cheryl casone. >> we're getting american express out. we're looking at a miss for american express. that stock is start trend downward. the estimate was a buck 30. came in at

google? >> the google, report could be messy for investors. for one, remember, google's smartphone business to lenovo which is now moved into the discontinued operations column. that should positively impact earnings because, remember, motorola's losses have been a drag on google's results. the company split its stocks and doubled its shares which could add confusion to q1 numbers. bottom line, analysts expect eps of 1641. google's class "a" shares up. >> we'll be back with you when the numbers come out. morgan, what is expected from big blue? >> ibm's missed on revenues the past nine out of ten quarters so expectations aren't high. analyst calling for eps of $2.41, a 15% decline year over year on revenues of 2.91 billion, a 2% drop. keep an eye on hardware, a trouble spot and strong bookings ended 2013 but q1 is typically slow and the one-off sale of an outsourcing business to synex which should negatively weigh on revenues as well. lastly, exposure and emerging markets, so slowing demand dragged on the company of the last year keeping a close watch to see how name pa

google protest on friday. meantime, tomorrow, google will be selling google glass devices to the public for one day only. we asked russell what advice he would give to people thinking about shelling out 15-hundred dollars for the gadget. google glass remains in a testing phase. it's set to be sold to the public later this year. an amnesty program allowing east oakland residents to dump bulk trash for free in a number of dumpsters set up at various locations. is a bigger success than officials thought it would be. the program just started on april 12th, and the dumpsters were full before the first day ended. it is part of an initiative to crack down on illegal dumping. and the response has been overwhelming. and overflowing. the amount of trash has spilled over into the streets. city officials hope those with more bulk trash can wait until the trash bins are emptied, before bringing more. another amnesty dumping program is expected in oakland in a few weeks. the effort is designed to curb blight and help keep communities clean. penh after some warmer side in the upper 70's and oatlate '80s- low right now b

google. these portfolio managers will wait until the smoke clears, the stock settles and they're likely to sell a kellogg for a google. the fact is on a growth basis, google is cheaper than any almost anything in the s&p 500. believe me, in a week, most portfolio managers will forget google missed the analyst numbers and instead be saying that's too cheap to ignore. that's how this terrible trade, terrible, turns into a terrific investment. but you might say what happens if google keeps deteriorating? as missing the analyst number applies? it's not deteriorating at all. they're spending a lot of money to promote future growth, something you want the company to do. you want your company to invest in future. not all should be buying back stock and giving big dividends. wasn't that was wrong at microsoft, hewlett-packard, dell? i think so. yes but aren't they being crimped by the desktop-to-mobile revolution? i think google has the best mobile product out there. i trust management when they say they have a game plan to make more money from mobile than desktop. you have to have patience here. do you? if so, i think google is a fantastic investment, at a great
