mr. cantor was too soft on immigration. that's on the one hand but on the other, it's a victory for the tea party. mr. cantor was anti-gay marriage and antiabortion. why is this necessarily a vote in favor of the tea party? in the sense that it was a grassroots movement and this district in particular that helped dave brat. he did not get support from large tea party groups. this was a word-of-mouth thing. there was a moment a few weeks ago when eric cantor spoke in front of local republicans down and richmond. and cantor started to criticize dave brat in public and got booed. that was the first warning sign that something was up. he started spending more money on ads and things like that and he mounted a real campaign in the final weeks because he saw trouble out there. he did not see this kind of trouble. this was a tea party victory for sure versus the establishment and it's a victory against big business interests. it's hard to tell you how many ceos were backing cantor in this local race in virginia. this is a defeat f

mr. cantor's great advantage was money and i think it hurt him. urt him because he spent an awful lot of money advertising mr. brat's name to a lot of people, well, we actually have a choice here. second, he ran some extremely foolish ads saying he's a college professor, therefore he's a liberal. mr. brat is not a liberal. furthermore, mr. cantor is hurt by his prior successes. being a party leader and traveling, and doing all the duties, he necessarily neglected some of the housekeeping duties in his district. >> let's hear from dave brat in a victory speech. >> this is the happiest moment of my life. dollars do not vote. you do. the house majority leader, eric cantor with about 71% of the precincts counted, the associated press called this race for mrat, because it was just not possible for cantor to catch up. his district around richmond and the suburban area there, very conservative. and as i said, for the longest time people thought that cantor would easily coast to victory. something snuck up on him in this one. and now he is defeated. of course the question becomes whether or not there is any chance at all that mr. cantor could actually continue to compete in this race. speculation already beginning that perhaps he will try to run as a write-in, something that is exceedingly difficult. hasn't happened in a few years. although senator mccull ski of -- of alaska did wins a a write-in after she lost the republican nomination in alaska several years ago. this is a huge surprise. washington is quite rattled, very much caught off guard and tonight the tea party is breathing anew with confidence. they have knocked off the house minority leader and david brat. >> i'm curious to get your take. two years ago talking about eric cantor wh

mr. goodman still made the ballot. all right, next up in the eric cantor race, mr. tor's paid pollster, the guy he paid to do polling, predicted cantor would win his primary last night and win in a landslide. is that true or false? may be the reason eric cantor didn't bother campaigning in his home district the morning of the primary and instead, held a fund raiser for lobbyists at a d.c. starbuck's. was the reason he was so cocky, his polling told him he would win and win big. true or false. [ bell dings ] >> reported in "the washington post," the pollster eric cantor hired to tell him how he was doing in virginia, his pollster told him he would beat david brat by 34 points. the republican polling for mclaughlin and associated told cantor he was on track to beat brat 62-28. of course that is not how it worked out. eric cantor not only didn't beat david brat by 34 points. he lost to him by 11 points t that said, consider that the same republican pollster in 2012 said that george allen, was going to win his senate race in virginia. he didn't. the same republican polls

mr. cantor as part of the washington establishment.or himself in recent weeks and months had been putting pressure on the virginia state party committee, actually trying to out of a few members of the state party committee and they did not appreciate that. some of them working actively against him in his district for this reelection. cantor also tried to have way which virginia nominates at state part convention altered into a primary. that didn't go over very well. these may seem like inside issues. what the truth of matter was brat was able to do was organize and bring out a huge grassroots group of support, largely only with the help of conservative talk radio and banging on doors. he was grossly overspent as you said. now comes, jenna, a huge, huge, game of musical chairs on capitol hill with the assumption that eric cantor will no longer be a viable majority leader lost his election. lame duck majority leader puts at risk the republican conference's ability to unite behind bills. conservatives will demand a piece of leadership act
