janine de la vega is joining us now from san jose to talk about this problem. it's been going on for awhile but what is being done about it? >> reporter: pam, there are no firefighters living inside fire station 16. this is here in east san jose near king and cunningham. firefighters tell me that they moved out because the mold problem was getting out of hand and they were concerned about their health. now last night the firefighters moved out and went to two nearby fire houses. the fire department command staff visited the station yesterday and determined all 24 firefighters on three shifts needed to leave because of the conditions. these photos show how crews were living out of the garage. they had moved their furniture from the living room and kitchen in there because they say the mold problem got so bad. firefighters tell ktvu news there has been mold problem here for four years but they say nothing has been done to permanently fix it. it's unclear why. a fire captain told us there has been mold problems at other stations in the past. >> they have cut staff

ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're in mountain view to explain how this new technology can crack down on dui offenders janine. >> reporter: mountain view is part of jerry hill's district and he lost his best friend to a drunk driver about 30 years ago. he is pushing for this legislation because he thinks it's going to make a big impact in reducing deaths. this new legislation would make it mandatory for anyone convicted of driving under the influence to installed aen ignition interlock device or ied. hill says data shows repeat dui offenders make up a third of all annual dii convictions. it would force first time offenders to install an iid. >> i think it's fine as long as they have done the due diligence and know the amount the program will cost the taxpayers is going to be outweighed by the benefit of the taxpayers. >> reporter: they support hills bill. they have been saturating bay area roads looking for impaired drivers during the holiday season and will be out in force for new years eve. hill will be unvail

janine de la vega is live in mountain view to explain how the new technology could crack down on dui offenders. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, each year more than a thousand people are killed by drunk driverses in california. and state senator jerry hill wants to prevent more dearths from happening -- deaths from happening. this new bill will be unveiled this morning at 10:00 a.m. in redwood city by hill who represents san mateo and santa clara counties. now, it would require all drivers convicted of dui to install an ignition interlock device known as an iid in their vehicles. right now, it's just optional. only 20% of drivers do t the driver breathes into the device. if it detects alcohol, the vehicle won't start. the bill would enforce first- time offenders to install this device. >> i think it's important about this. it gets someone early. getting them to realize that they may or may not have a problem but they have to change their behavior. >> reporter: law enforcement agencies have been saturating bay area roads looking for impaired drivers during this holiday s

janine, how am i going to get home?ell, i don't think we're seeing too much problem yet, so folks who are heading out today, there have been a few hundred cancellations around the country, but so far things aren't looking too bad for travelers heading to the airports. the biggest thing you can do is get there early and stay up-to-date, sign up for alerts. and if the airlines do start waiving or changing cancellation fees for affected areas, you know, check on that and see if you can proactively change your plans that will suit you a lit better. rich: can they do so much more than waiting on the phone and waiting for an agent over the phone? it really does pay to talk to somebody there sometimes, right? >> it can. you know, the agents on the phone can be really helpful as well, you know, but if you are at the airport, i always recommend having that 1-800 number programmed into your phone, but also at the same time going over to the service desk because you never know how long those lines are going to be at the airport fo
