abramson said he's been busy. the cold and flu are the no. 1 culprit. >> there's not as much incentive for generic manufacturers to keep large stores of reserves in medication, so they're cutting it a lot closer so when there's a big surge in demand, things just run out. >> reporter: it's not just a problem in the bay area. we're also finding out pharmacies in l.a. are also running low on this prescription cough medication. so again it's a problem statewide. >> so many people are sick right now, there are a lot of people in the building. i think allen might be coming down with a little something. he wants to know are over the counters the only option here? >> reporter: well, when i spoke to the doctor today, he told me yes, there is an alternative. it's actually benzonitate and it's a capsule, but it doesn't work quite the same way. it won't put you to sleep like that prescription cough medication. so it will get rid of the cough, but if you are having trouble sleeping, it won't do the trick. >> allen, take note.

one more point, and it's something so near and dear to all of us, what director abramson referenced before transportation bill. in may, a crucial moment for all of us, when the previous transportation authorization ends. and the fate of so much of what matters to our people hangs in the balance. one of the things we talk about as mayor johnson mentioned, that our cities of opportunities task force is how to band together to press the congress for fairness in transportation and funding for our cities. fairness for focus on mass transit that we all know is crucial for our economies. for any possibility of an inclusive economy, and for the future of our environment and our earth. we have a chance in these next few months to turn the tide, and create the kind of momentum that will get us a transportation bill that is more fair to all of us. we're going to be working to the -- together on this when the conference of mayors meets in new york city next month. in march. we'll be in boston for the next meeting of the city of opportunities task force. we need, together, to create a momentum around t
