let's bring in meteorologist janice dean. janice, educate us.how often are you kind of watching this come together? is this an hourly event that they kind of refresh? >> every few hours we get a new computer model that gives us an indication of how much snow we'll get and the timing. i want to put this in perspective. we didn't realize what an epic event this was going to be until this time yesterday, harris. we were watching a little clipper system that was going to dive across the ohio valley. we thought there was a potential for it to become bigger and stronger but it wasn't until this time yesterday that i checked the forecast models. and it was like, boom! we have something on our hands here. so, again, can't stress it enough. we have a blizzard warning in effect for millions of folks from central jersey all the way up to coastal maine. what does that mean? that means the following conditions must prevail for at least three hours. and in this case harris, we could be talking about a period of six to 12 hours of visibility reduced to a quart

janice dean tracking the storm. snow is coming down faster than crews can clear it right, janice? >> reporter: at some point during that overnight storm when it was at its highest. when you look around the streets, virtually shut down, you're only supposed to be out driving on these roads if you have something important to do. you're supposed to be out here clearing them up. or perhaps there's a medical emergency or first responder or something like that. about 30,000 the people lost power during this storm. it's bad for the folks that lost their power, but because of this fluff you snow not as many trees came down as were initially feared when the forecasts were coming in. the travel ban lifted in connecticut, the travel ban has been lifted in far western massachusetts. apparently the storm out there was a completely different kind of storm. but here in the eastern part of massachusetts, that travel ban remainings in place. it's been fascinating here in the city to see basically pedestrians checking things out. >> cross country seems to be pretty nice because the plows kind of ta

meteorologist janice huff is in the weather center with the forecast. janice, we got a lot of gatherings this weekend. what are we looking at here? >> that's right, brian. you mentioned rain over the super bowl venue in phoenix. that's the energy that will be spreading across the country this weekend producing snow, ice and freezing rain. it starts to move out over the weekend on saturday into the plains. it will be snowing from omaha to chicago by saturday night. then that energy spreads towards new york city on sunday. there will be some heavy rain moving in across west virginia, down through virginia and parts of the southern states also. then the snow spreads into boston around 11:00 on monday. so they could see upwards of another foot of snow there, 6 to 10 inches possible around new york city maybe as much as 6 to 10 inches back to cleveland. there's also windchills for bitter cold temperatures below zero, brian. >> janice huff in the weather center for us tonight as we head into the weekend. janice, thanks. >>> a major decision today in the polit

janice? >> hi, greta. the other thing about this is we will have tremendous power outages especially for new england and eastern long island and the temperatures are going to be frigid. these are current temps right now so. 20's and theirs. you factor in the winds and in some cases we are going to see wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour. that's going to drop those real feel temperatures into the teens. even below zero in a lot of these areas. so, if the power is out for a number of days, you need to check on your neighbors check on the elderly because this could be a potentially very dangerous life-threatening storm. looking at the satellite radar imagery. we have had a dry spot here in new york city. it looks like we are trying to fill in a little bit. long island they have upped their first alert forecasting. i know we are going to talk to rick leventhal in a little bit. he is going to tell us up to two feet or more for rhode island. we are in the state of now casting. we are going to first alert f

janice, want to show our viewers how this works. snow systems come moving out of the midwest and wallop into the northeast. sometimes they act like a nor'easter and go up the coast. that's what this one's done. think of a hurricane. you know, hurricanes are low pressure centers and their winds go iné"cz a counterclockwise direction, right? so like this. when the hurricane came -=new orleans it's pushing that water up on the coast to the right side of the storm. we have that same thing happening here. there's a big low pressure center out here that's sending the winds in this way. and just like1cñ you have bands of rain in a hurricane, you have bands of snow coming out of this. there's thunder and lightning being reported out here thundersnow if you will. so these big bands are coming through sort of slicing along for new york and a(lÑ5eujjy and as this low pressure center moves more of those bands will come into these major cities. here's the thinking now after lots more computer models have come through and after we've seen this th

janice dean on how much snow we could see, leah gabrielle at la guardia. we begin with rick on long island. rick, how is it looking out there? >> reporter: it's nasty and getting worse. we're just getting started with the storm. we can show you traffic moving pretty well westbound on the long island expressway headed towards new york city, exit 51. we just had plows come through and clear what they could off of it. and traffic restrictions about to go into effect. these tractor-trailers north supposed to be on the highway. they were ordered off the major highways by 4:00 this afternoon and they're closing all roads on long island to all but essential emergency vehicles, basically the governor telling people to go home and stay home. with the state of emergency in effect now in new york, also in new jersey and massachusetts connecticut also banning travel as of 9:00 tonight. train service will be impacted as well. we know that all the new york city subways will stop running between 7:00 and 8:00 tonight. the long island railroad and metro north rail lines w

meteorologist janice dean from the fox extreme weather center. what i'm starting to see change with all this is the snow totals. >> we'll be in a period of now-casting. what that means, harris while the storm is happening we'll watch to see exactly where the track is how far inland it gets and if the storm slows down. that is going to push up some snow totals. so we can give you an estimate now. certainly a foot or more if you live from philadelphia all the way up to maine. boston, we think you could get the jackpot snow of perhaps three feet. new york city still looking at 18 to 24 inches. but again where the storm sets up. and it doesn't really matter about the snowfall totals. i know we're very focused on snowfall totals of the this is a blizzard. that is what sets it apart. a blizzard can potentially be life-threatening. not just two feet of snow on the ground. winds in excess of 50, 60 miles per hour, not just for a period of three hours, six to 10 hours. so people can not be out of their homes. you can not be on the roads. you can not be ou

meteorologist janice dean is live in the fox news extreme weather center now.old air is moving east quickly. >> yes, absolutely. so here in new york we'll feel this cold snap heading into wednesday and thursday. so theror-under forecast highs. one degree on wednesday. the average is 24 in minneapolis. one on wednesday for chicago, and we're not talking about wind chills. these are air temperatures. 23 on thursday for new york city with overnight lows below zero in a lot of these areas. so the forecast highs for wednesday, this is where the cold core is across the northern plains and upper midwest, with temperatures one degree, that's again way below average for this time of year but the dangerous part is the wind chill. so currently it feels like minus 18 in green bay minus 16 in minneapolis, and across the northern plains and upper midwest we could feel wind chills from minus 40 to minus 50 degrees. so dangerous. there's a look at the temperatures for chicago. minus 13over night on thursday and again the real danger is the wind chills. back to you. >> janice,

janice dean is live in the fox room weather center. i think i need to get new glasses, i think i'm seeing white stuff fall here in new york city? >> yes we are seeing a little bit of snow. it's wintertime right? >> i guess so. >> we have a myriad of weather problems here arthel, we have snow across the great lakes and midwest. moving in towards the northeast. we also have the risk for severe weather, warm enough for the potential of hail, damaging winds and even isolated tornadoes, the watch is in effect until 6:00 p.m. local time. it looks like we have a tornado warning right here where we have the polygon, around louisiana, mississippi, some storms containing rotation, tornado warning for the next 15 or 20 minutes or so. that's going to be a risk throughout the day across the gulf coast towards the southeast. yes, the risk for severe weather. then on the cold side of the storm we're dealing with snow. we could also see the potential for flooding, flood watches and warnings are posted here in the green shaded regions. that's the warm

fox news' meteorologist janice dean is in the weather center with the latest.ght now? >> melissa, a lot of people are going to be experienceing blizzard conditions into tomorrow so people need to be wrapping up preparations. we already have snow flying in philadelphia d.c., new york, up to boston and the main event really hasn't even gotten started yet. that's going to happen overnight tonight, into tomorrow, but again, yes seeing heavier bands in new york city and long island with wind gusts in excess of 25 miles per hour. we'll show you that snow continuing up towards new jersey, long island, connecticut, rhode island massachusetts, well into tuesday and then we're still going to see those wind gusts in excess of 30, 40 miles per hour even when the storm exits towards the north. so blizzard warnings in effect this is the real important part of the storm, the takeaway is that we are going to have conditions going downhill tonight, the wind gusts in excess of 40, 50, even up to hurricane force winds along cape cod and the islands. so that's where we have our bl

janice, 2006 was the biggest storm we have had in this century. we going to eclipse that record? >> i don't think so here in new york, but they could in boston. that is almost -- i mean or they're going to get close to three feet of snow with the latest predictions which would put them in the top two at the very least in the boston area. for new york city, 12-18 probably and then eastern long island areas like cape cod and the islands up towards new england, those will be higher snowfall totals. this storm hasn't even gotten its act together. it needs to go off the coast and develop and strengthen overnight tonight, but we're getting snow already in new york, reports of snow and a mixture of rain for philadelphia and boston, hartford as well getting some snow. so snow in boston, light to moderate snow in new york, and that's going to be continuous through the evening and into tomorrow. already seeing wind gusts of 20-30 miles per hour. we have ground stops, of course, at a lot of the airports already and, again, i can't stress this enough, this st

doug is in the reagan international airport reporting on the travel conditions and janice dean has been tracking this monsterous storm. >> we are certainly looking at this storm being a big event. this is the top five for new york city. last time we saw epic snow 20 inches or 21. and we go back to 2006 for our top storm and that was 26.9-inchs. february 11th- 12 and we were outside and covering it and it was epic. boston, here are your top five and we have the potential to be in the top two certainly for boston. we'll be in a period when the storm strengthens off of the coast and getting a handle on the snowfall toelts. people are focused on the snowfall totals. a foot or two or throw feet. it doesn't matter. we have winds in express of 40 or 50 miles per hour for a duration of 6 to 10 hours in the biggest cities in the northeast. light snow reported in new york and philadelphia and up to boston. this is not the main event. the low has to move offshore and it will strengthen overnight and we'll get blizzard conditions. and those are the satellite radar image row. and we'll get in the ov

janice we are in winter?going to feel it in the northern plains and midwest where they will struggle to get out of the single digits. we have had reports of tornados and tornado watches in the afternoon. and here's our latest tornado watch for central alabama until 8 o'clock p.m. local time. the good news is that we didn't have recent tornado warnings and we had them in parts of alabama and a severe thunderstorm warning here. and that is on local time and see the threat of severe storms and isolated tornados and heavy heavy rain are. and the storm prediction center introduced a moderate risk report and all of those ingredients will come in overnight and tomorrow moving over the southeast and parts of the midatlantic. we'll look on the back side of this very cold air and snow is going to fly across the plains and great lakes and snow piling up to the interior northeast and in the mountainess regions. i know it is great news. the cold air next week struggling to get out of the single digits and some cases sub0
