su keenan joins us. >> we are seeing enough rough -- another rough close. we have seen an advance in gold both related to the imf slashing its forecast. check out the numbers. oil close to the low the session , just below $46. natural gas is higher. this has to do with the fact that you're seeing warmer weather ahead. there is a one-to punch for oil. a surgeon direct a production. we continue to get news of these rising supplies and the shaky economy. he says the iraqi production will only add to the supply glut. he points out the imf report that shows oil down 50% since june. >> the traditional sources of demand for oil might not be there going forward. china is a prime example. if we are growing at 1% or less, it does mean we will not be consuming as much oil. the other thing we have to consider is the efficiency of the utilization. >> demand-supply is a concern. gas prices continue to plummet to six-year lows. according to aaa, the national average is close to two dollars a gown. pump prices can be found two dollars at gas stations in 28 states. >> we ar

>> all right, su keenan joining us with the commodities report. thanks.e on oil, alix steel joins me. she will be sitting in for trish regan on "street smart." second day of speculation almost 60% slump in the prices over the past seven months. it is going to slow production. is it? >> welcome to the first breaks in back to back rent production since thinks giving. the idea, the more they cut, the less they produce, which trims production. i tend to be a tad skeptical on that, because if you spend millions of dollars to make a new well, are you really going to stop, even though you're making less money? the idea that the back half of the year is when we see supply will come up, not so much yet. >> this on the heels of last year when we saw oil falling into a bear market. >> right, absolutely. when you look at the big guys are they going to be able to keep up with capital plans question mark chevron said, no, they are cutting the buyback. they are slashing it so they can keep some money for expiration, because at the end of the day, you have to sell oil to

su keenan joins me with the commodity markets. >> oil plunging and we see the trades settle out and we oil at its lowest level -- frank crude at its lowest level in eight years. we saw a bit of a rebound earlier in the session, but now it is at its lows of the session, or close to it. it has fallen as low as 49.82. very close to that. any technical analyst will tell you closing on or near the low of the day is a very, very error signal. -- very very bear signal. russian production is at a post-soviet high. and you have the iraqis even adding more supply to the market, all of that adding to the bearer scenario -- bear scenario. there is a strong color -- correlation between the dollar and oil prices. the dollar very strong. >> this will continue to be a big break for the consumer? >> in 40 states, drivers can find place is selling gas for under two dollars a gallon. gas futures retail gas both falling to the lowest level since 2009. energy companies all down in today's trade. >> the fact is that these lower oil prices are going to cause the oil industry to adjust and the knighted states

my colleague su keenan joins us. >> and eighth week of losses.he key drivers was a report from the international energy agency forecasting supply will be lower than originally thought. so, the bold attitude the tour for low prices could be low prices. we are looking at prices going out pretty much on the high end of the day. oil has been up as much as four and a half percent. we see that pretty much across the commodity play. according to michael lynch, this is the first evidence he says that low prices are rebalancing the market. markets probably have not gone down enough. they have rebounded a few times. check out the big picture. a lot of traders are echoing that view that the markets are trying to consolidate here, the markets certainly a wild ride for a lot of the traders. the wildest since 1986. >> scarlet knight were talking about the swiss currency. >> we are seeing gold at a four-month high. a lot of people buying gold for investments. given that the euro is falling, gold prices jumped, and call options are bullish. gold prices are now b

su keenan is in the newsroom with details. >> we see oil moving to its lowest after the fed decisioned. it drop another percentage coming off of its rate. it was already down more than 3%. this was already a drop. the fuel supply rose to the highest in three decades. check it out -- right across the board. gasoline futures erased earlier gains. the big picture we see with the latest supply report from the government is that there was a buildup of more than 9 million -- almost a nine-million-barrel gain last week and they were practically "choking" on this stuff, to quote one analyst. oil started picking up steam as a big decline or. old was down ahead of the fed decision. these are trader positions. it is now off of its low of the day. it did not help that goldman came out with a call that commodities, pretty much, are the worst for what they see near-term. >> we see push back on president obama's plan for offshore drilling. >> we talked about that yesterday -- it probably was to be expected, but even from those favoring offshore drilling, we are talking about opening up in area 50 m

su keenan is in the newsroom of details. >> it has been another wild day in the commodities.ad a rally from opec. gold and copper bouncing back and holding those gains. check out the roller coaster ride for new york city. it went on a seven-point -- 7.5% swing. today, a 10% swing from about 50 12 below 47. heading for the $46 mark. -- swing from above 50 to below 47. the gains were made all the greater. there was a rally going on early in the day. opec cuts demand in that reignites the selloff. nothing fundamental has changed according to traders. this hate will take months before we see u.s. production slowdown. any rally will be sold into -- the sole exception is the natural gas. very cold weather ahead. the market is not acting like it's done going down. >> is opec trying to send a message here? >> they are. oil price declines will have a big impact including u.s. production being a parent. -- being impaired. it's an annual growth will be lower than previously thought as prices lead to lower investment and therefore less drilling. it sounds good but last week we saw a reco

time now for the commodities report with my -- with su keenan. >> we are seeing as what can only be describedsane losing energy. what one veteran trader called insane. oil is up 5% after being up 2%. let's start with natural gas. you see a double-digit climb. chicago is the heart of the cold weather market. only three degrees earlier in the month. i called steve swartz who said what we are looking at is a short-term imbalance. a light of private urologists saying colder weather is ahead not just at the end of the month, but in february. you have a lot of traders shorting gas betting it would go lower and now they are turning around on the wrong side of the market and buying big time. now it's go to the other energy market because you see a similar pattern play out. oil actually down, right at the $45 mark. so was the rest of this market happening right as we head to close without any major headlines. they say had gone down to far too fast. those who were short betting meal complex would go lower are buying back in a big way. let's go to metals because you see major moves there with copper lea

su keenan has the details. >> we have oil snapping a three-day losing streak and joining golden the mover. a lot of green on the screen in metals and energy. oil is rising partly due to a weakening dollar. we also have opec warning that prices may search with the new investment in production. the biggest gainer by far is natural gas, which continues its wild ride, even though the blizzard of 2015 failed to live up to expectations. we are up 3% on the day. getting back to oil and gold, we have not seen the two move in the same direction lately. gold getting a boost from the weak durable goods data. also the case that the fed will push the first rate hike further out in time which tend to be bullish for gold. that decision will be out tomorrow. >> meanwhile, an important policy shift on oil drilling. what are traders saying? >> they say it continues, the success story of growing u.s. oil output. they also questioned the timing, given the fact that we have a supply glut right now. roughly five years after a bp oil spill that is still in litigation. the obama administration planning to lift

joining me now with his name jim keenan. welcome. great to have you with us. oil prices stay where they currently are today. >> yeah. i don't think it's isolated to the high-yield market. you have seen a big move in high-yield energy prices and over the last couple of years the shale boon and the energy recovery in the u.s. and about 15% to 16% of the high yield market 4% 5% of the market. you have seen the high yield bonds significantly decline. that being said you probably won't see a lot of defaults in 10 2015 but 2016. but it's not just the high yield market. oil's going to affect the global markets and russia and venezuela and nigeria and a pretty big impact on the global market. >> what kind of impact on the u.s. though? how many more declines like this i'm thinking again about housing last time around does it take to understand where some of the risks are in the financial system? how much is different this time versus what we saw in 2008? >> well i don't think we know. you still are the significant very rapid decline in oil and haven't seen all the impa
