. >> joining us now is chris smith, editor for "new york" magazine. thank you for being here, it is nice to see you. >> thank you for having me, rachel. >> the thing that has been fascinating in the media about "the daily show" is finding a way to describe it that accounts for it's influence among newsmakers and the rest of the media. do you feel in a has been an appropriate focus or were we missing the point? >> in that clip you showed from john talking with you, he did a bad job of defining what he does, which in a crazy way is the beauty of it. he blurred a lot of these lines. yes, at the core it is jokes about the news, but over the course of 16 years he really there is satire, there is stupid gags. it is at times straight out commentary. it became in the last five or eight or so years a more criticism of the media. and that was an interesting evolution. but the fact that jon never really pinned it down and didn't want to, didn't want the show to, is part of why it has been so successful. >> that was going to be my next question to you. the media

brian stelter is here and chris smith as well.making us follow jon stewart. >> i know. he's so funny. i love him and hate him at the same time. i'll be honest with you. brian, were you surprised at this news? >> by the timing i sure was. it came out of nowhere. some people speculated he was doing it to take pressure off brian williams who is he friendly with and under a lot of controversy as you were talking about earlier this hour. an hour after jon stewart announced, brian williams was suspended. if that was stewart's strategy it didn't work. this has been in the works for a long time. stewart has been thinking about retiring from "the daily show" for years now. he's been dropping hints about it. he said last night he's been a bit restless and the show deserves better than that. it probably is the right time for him to step aside while still on top producing an excellent broadcast and has time to say good-bye later this year. >> a lot of people say maybe jon stewart should take over brian williams' seat. actually christiane aman

chris smith of new york magazine wrote the piece on stewart. james poniewozik is the television critic at time magazine. i am pleased to have them at this table. were you surprised by this or did you have an idea? >> that was the story that came out in november. i was not surprised. we spent a lot of time talking about the movie he had just made. we talked about the legacy of the "the daily show" and the fact that his contract is up in september. he had not 100% made up his mind at that point. it was pretty clear the direction he was leaning. the man does not feel sorry for himself in any way. he has been extraordinarily lucky and well paid for his job. 16 plus years, four nights a week. that is pocket change for you, a day at the beach. but it is a grind. he has done it very well. making the movie enlarged his world as a citizen and artist. he was encouraged he should try new and different things. he wants to turn the show over at a time where whoever follows him will have the entire 2016 presidential campaign as a base narrative. it makes sen

i am proud to lead the task force along with my returning co-chair congressman chris smith, and incoming co-chairs michael burgess and shaka fattah. alzheimer's is a tragic disease affecting millions of americans and has reached crisis proportions. there is no effective treatment, no means of prevention, nor even a method for slowing the progression of the disease. according to the centers for disease control and prevention, five million americans are living with alzheimer's disease as of 2013. this number is expected to almost triple to 14 million by the year 2050. the costs associated with alzheimer's disease and other forms dementia are also growing at unsustainable rates. a recent rand study of adults ages 70 and older found that the total economic cost of dementia and 2010 was estimated to be $109 billion for direct care alone. that is higher than the cost of both heart disease and cancer. furthermore, when the cost of informal care is included the total cost rises to between $150 billion and $215 billion. we must act now. to change the trajectory of this disease. the bipartisan sup
