mr. robinson to say that. i want you to look at something that's really striking to me van, especially compared to when you think of the ferguson police force, predominantly white even though it represents an area that's predominantly black. in madison you've got 80% of the officers is white, 79% of the population is white. you are looking at a much more representative police department in this case. does this impact your assessment about whether race is involved here? >> well, it could and it could not. let me say a couple of things that you see differently from ferguson positively. the mayor came out and was very kind and showed concern and consideration. the police chief showed concern and consideration. even mr. palmer who was just on showed concern and consideration. you didn't hear that from ferguson. you didn't hear that from our other guest who frankly said you had the right to kill people? >> who said that van? >> you did. >> absolutely not. there's a need to have a political conversation in this coun

mr. robinson robinson. that letter was patronizing, poorly written and i think a gross breach of discipline. it serves no other purpose than to undercut the primary negotiators en route to a negotiated agreement we hope and it was destructive to that process. we've been at this for 18 months. let's demonstrate some strategic patience and some discipline here and wait to see what we've got coming out of it. >> rand paul was among the senators who signed on to cotton's letter. this weekend. paul gave a novele support. he said he was just trying to help president obama. according to the "huffington post" paul said "there's no one in washington more against war and more a negotiated deal than i am, but i want the negotiated deal to be a good deal. my reason for signing on to the letter reiterates what is the actual law that congress will have to undo sanctions but i also signed on to the letter because i want the president to negotiate from a position of strength which means he needs to be telling them in iran

robinson and john shane, associate professor at john j. college of justice and retired police captain. i want to start with you because i listen to mr.his voice the sadness, the stress, the distress and at this point i'm reporting on these every week. i'm thinking this has to make the world actually harder for police officers, worse for police officers, more dangerous for police officers if every time i see a blue light i'm thinking this is the kind of interaction i'm going to have. yet it feels like only the internal policing of police on their fellow policemen can really make this it stop. >> let's not look at this as a moral. when you look at the data maybe 2008 was the last survey, 45 million e interaction between the police and the public. the media doesn't see the incidents that don't happen. and when they are portrayed in this fashion when you have a slant this way and don't have the other side and all the details, it make s it seem as though it's potentially worse than it is. i'm not suggesting that those officers don't have something to explain, they clearly do, and that's the basis of accountability. but accountability does
