i'm joined by john podesta, chair of the hillary clinton presidential campaign. of course, he was most recently president obama's senior adviser in the white house and president bill clinton's last chief of staff so you really encompass everything about the last two administrations. welcome to -- to democratic admissions. welcome back to "meet the press," mr. podesta. >> good morning, chuck. >> there was an exhaustive list of issues that hillary clinton rolled out ideas, proposals, but there was one issue she ducked almost completely, veiled reference to the issue of trade. she has not wanted to step into this fight between house democrats and president obama. why? why was there no mention of the riff inside the party, and why did she not take a position on what is the foremost debate inside the democratic party right now? >> chuck, she's been very clear on where she stands on trade. she's laid out a two-prong test on how to look at trade agreements. first, to grow jobs, grow wages and protect american workers, and second does it protect our national security. th

her campaign chairman john podesta said on sunday shows and very clear about her stand on trade. lit fact checked on the that and said it was mostly want. she hasn't said what changes she wants. she hasn't said what political problems there are. what stances members of congress would be to. she is. this is issue that gets her in trouble. either she upsets big business corporate supporters or make her base labor and progressive activists absolutely irate. she is being vague and it is understandable. jenna: we should mention this legislation is a big package daniel. there is a question how this package will move itself through the house now. you have the part that is the fast track authority that the president is asking congress for. you also have the part that is labor part, that some democrats want and republicans don't. this may be an issue for democrats but also an issue for republicans because there has been disagreement within the conservative movement as to the way forward with this bill as well. >> absolutely. the conservative opposition to the bill is so different. it tend

heard you were coming so they decided to get busy with their own emails and senses one in which john podestae chairman of the campaign said you are and i'm quoting, clinging to an invented scandal and that the one question -- he says one question that prominently remains, what if anything does all this have to do with benghazi? your response. >> well, the murder of four of my fellow americans is not an invented scandal, and what it has to do with our investigation is this. we were asked by our colleagues in the house to look at all policies, all activities, all decisions that led up to the attacks in benghazi, the pendency of the attacks themselves the administration's response in the aftermath and then the administration's compliance with a legitimate congressional oversight. so if you look at just the first troch, what led to the attacks. john what does our government now said led to the attacks? what is our government's official position on the motive behind these attacks? anti-western sentiment. so you don't look at anti-western sentiment in a 24-hour vacuum prior to the attacks. you hav

mook, the campaign manager for hillary clinton is trying to balance the budget by trying to get john podesta the bus instead of taking the plane or the train to brooklyn where his family lives and you went along with him. >> yeah we had a nice bus ride with the clinton campaign chairman last week. he was a good sport and let me and a "washington post" photographer go with him and kind of document it. it was a way to show that this budget-minded, tight-fisted mentality that the campaign is putting forward is partly out of necessity because they are confining operating expenses to the primary money that they can raise themselves during the primary. no super pac and so forth. so there's a fairly limited pot of money, and it's also partly for show. she wants to be able to show that she's running a very disciplined campaign that's different in every way from the one she ran in 2008. and there's -- you know there's a certain element of everybody going to summer camp here right? it's a bunch of young kids in an office full of broken furniture and they all have to take the $30 bus. >> and chris, the
