iowa and new hampshire. they're talking about the south. they're talking about -- because there's a scenario here that's possible where bernie sanders could, a lot can change in the next few months, but bernie sanders could conceivably win iowa and new hampshire. for different reasons they set up well for bernie sanders. the clinton people will now tell you the demographics will change considerably of the electorate when you get out of the two heavily white states. go to the south, african-americans are much better constituency potential for hillary clinton and not for bernie sanders. so they think, look, that's their message to democrats is basically even in that worst case scenario where we lose these first two states we have a firewall. >> competitively when we think about this from the campaign cash that clinton has access to compared to sanders and the democratic delegates that she already has wrapped up, forecast that calendar for us. >> the other thing is to keep in mind, too, always talking about if it's not hillary and sud difficult bernie sanders has traction, bringing in a new candidate. there are deadlines here to make state bal

if you talk to the campaign, iowa is a big part but they need to improve the national sense of his candidacy and the possibilitiesit. it is hard. he has the boost those things simultaneously. john: he came into the race with a lot of doubt. we talked about yesterday. people thought he was not necessarily intellectually up to the task and was not a major league player. for that moment in the spring, he seemed to put the doubts to rest but he has made a lot of mistakes, a lot of flubs in a lot of interviews and said things that were provocative. like suggesting a wall with canada. the chattering classes have been reinforced in their initial doubts and that's hard to chloroform. mark: the favorability of a lot of people are down in iowa. another thing that the poll is between the two front runners, donald trump and ben carson. both of them have high fa vorability. trump is up to 60% and carson has the highest, 79%. it is better for carson, but there are some interesting things. john: the two most important things that stand out is among evangelical voters which is a huge bloc in iowa and among very conservative vote

that means if i lived in iowa, i would want to know where each of those numbers -- i would want to live as far away from them as possible. there is something seriously wrong with the republican party of those people combined have a majority of the delegation. john: i'll tell you what else is going on with carson, he is a nice man and the brilliant talented surgeon. he obviously does not have standard qualifications for office, but i will say this he is leading trump among evangelicals. and we all know that's a huge chunk of the iowa electorate. he's the guy right now who stands the best chance of being the evangelical candidate. unless, my orthodontist he might get ben carson a run for his money. these people are odd. john: i want to show you something else about the trump number. this is a closer race and he has seen in recent polling. we also looked at his internals, those are compelling. his unfavorable favorable is way ahead. the number of people who said they would never vote for him back in may has turned around. his internal numbers are very good. guest: what you think that is? john: he's dominating everything ar

iowa. the clinton campaign's announcement of the super delegates they locked up as a kind of shot across the bow to the possible engines of joe biden, to other competitors in the race saying this is a formidable campaign. we have the home state senator of the first in the nation primary. people will interpret this as a kind of muscle flexing. are you comfortable with that interpretation? >> people are going to interpret all kind of things between now and the actual primary season. you know, polls are going to go up and down. you all who are the analysts are going to find all kinds of reasons for why people do things, but the fact is we're getting into the fall now, the campaign season is going to heat up, and so it's a great time to be out there doing what i can to help hillary get elected. >> you know, i'm curious. your read with respect to immigration, you survived in a dismal year for democrats. you were one of the very few bright spots in last year's election. it was a tough fought race. what is your sense about your home state voters, what they are looking for and whether it is speaking to some of the cons
