that was the demand as protesters demonstrated at san francisco city hall today. dozens of people filled the halls demanding mayor ed lee fire police chief greg surr over his handling of the police shooting of mario woods. the mayor has not responded to today's protest. the demonstration was described as loud but peaceful. the 26-year-old mario woods was shot 14 times by police officers earlier this month. he was a stabbing suspect and police say they only opened fire after he moved toward an officer with a knife in his hands. chief surr has defended his officer's actions saying the officers were threatened. wood's family disagrees. they have filed a lawsuit. there are at least three independent investigations currently going into this shooting. >>> an angry complaint tonight from the bay area's muslim community over the release of a man accused of making deadly threats. members of the islamic center of west contra costa county claim william celli stood outside their mosque and yelled he was going to, quote, kill you all. police arrested celli this weekend and fou

an angry crowd stormed san francisco city hall last night demanding a new chief of police. on the over side of those doors it was standing room only. the chief renewed his call for fewer lethal weapons after the department's latest deadly shooting. our christin ayers was there. >>> reporter: people faced off inside the meeting against the police chief and the commission. >> what we witnessed was an assassination, a hate crime, and straight-up murder. >> reporter: there were calls for chief suhr's resignation and demands that the five officers who killed mario woods on december 2 be stripped of pay and charged. outside the meeting -- >> chanting. >> reporter: -- chaos as those who could not fit inside staged another protest. [ screaming ] >> reporter: commissioner said the point was to present solutions. >> the chief is going to say the specific steps that the department has taken and this commission is going to begin a discussion of the dgo on use of force. >> reporter: chief suhr has his own ideas. >> i think the officers should have tasers. >> reporter: he already ordered

san francisco, the jail. the current jail at san francisco city hall is seismically unsafe.nd there is just about everybody agrees it needs to be replaced. this week the board of supervisors refused to allocate $250 million to build a new one, even though the state is offering $80 million to help subsidize it. why do they do that? >> somebody said, i think it was the d.a., this could be the most expensive gift ever. you get $80 million from the state but you have to spend $100 million to build the thing. san francisco is a city that's not too intent on putting people in jail. they want diversion. they want substance abuse. they want mental health counseling and they thought that the jail as drawn up wouldn't have enough of that so they wanted the city to go back to the drawing board. and they had the d.a., the district attorney, on their side. and that kwaf a lot of cover to opponents of the jail and so the board said, we don't want it. >> it was certainly a blow to mayor lee. >> yep. >> who supported it. the new year around the corner. we have a host of new laws coming in t

. >> reporter: that's the word here at san francisco city hall. as you can see, the protestors some from san francisco, some from oakland and around the bay area, are massing on the steps and they plan to march up to the commission meeting in the next couple of minutes and let their feelings be known. they are not happy with the way the san francisco police department has been comporting itself especially when it comes to use of force. it's interesting that the police officers association the union representing the cops aren't happy about the mayor's call for a change in the policy, as well. here's what the president of that organization told us today. >> if somebody is, um, with a knife and advancing on you, you don't start out with pepper spray. if they are advancing on you, with an edged weapon in a close proximity, you start out with a firearm. that's reasonable. >> reporter: this is the scene as we wait right now the protest gathering steam. at 6:00, we're going to take a closer look at the fight between the mayor and the officers' union and
