above is st. james as a pilgrim. and at the very top, james the slayer of moore's is writing his legendary white battle steed. pilgrims sometimes make the journey in a holy year. for whenever the feast day of st. james, the 25th of july falls upon a sunday. only on these occasions is the sacred portal. they date from the romanesque era and are the work of master matteo and his workshop. it wasn't until the 17th century they were placed here. passing behind the altar statute and kissing or touching his shoulder has been an essential ritual since the earliest days. even so, the accounts left by medieval pilgrims say little of it. it may be they were unable or unwilling to express personal with feelings -- to express personal feelings. the pilgrim mass is attended by visitors from all around the globe. on high feast days, they competed spectacularly with the swinging of an immense sense. it takes eight men to set the sensors free. the ritual is first mentioned, and the outside sensor seems to be desirable to praise god a

supposedly, st. james went on a missionary trip from the holy land all the way to this remote corner of northwest spain. according to legend, in the year 813, st. james' remains were discovered in the town that would soon bear his name. people began walking there to pay homage to his relics. after a 12th-century pope decreed that the pilgrimage could earn forgiveness for your sins, the popularity of the camino de santiago soared. the camino also served a political purpose. it's no coincidence that the discovery of st. james' remains happened when muslim moors controlled most of spain. the whole phenomenon of the camino helped fuel the european passion to retake spain and push the moors back into africa. but by about 1500, with the dawn of the renaissance and the reformation, interest in the camino died almost completely. then, in the 1960s, a handful of priests re-established the tradition. throute hasie ye ge resurgence, with 100,000 pilgrims trekking the santiageaear. announcer: this program is made poss
