elise finch here with that. it felt like a real winter day for a change. >> we haven't had many of those since winter officially began but we definitely started off the new year with a day that felt like winter. still, not the coldest new year's day. that's for sure. taking a live look outside, where it's cold, it's breezy, 38 degrees right now. of course, feeling a little bit colder though with the winds. 12 miles an hour gusting to 18 miles an hour. 42 degrees. that was the high temperature on the day. we hit that shortly after 1 a.m. normally we would be at 39. 39 is the average for new year's day. the record 62. so we are looking at the warmest new year's day of course 62 degrees, colders 4 below zero. clearly we were nowhere near that. the wettest 1888, two inches of rain just over. anded snowiest, 186 the -- and the no it's, 1869, 9" of snow. we have seen flurries but not measurable. so your temperature trend goes like this. pair of 48s to end 2015. a pair of 42s to ring in 2016. it was our high today. we

elise finch joins us from sparta where there's a dusting. >> reporter: and yeah, you're right, it is basically just a dusting it's not much snow at all but it was enough to get people talking here in sparta this afternoon. that's probably because we have had little or no snow to talk about so far this winter. the afternoon snow showers are a rare sight this season. and this of course is a minor snow event producing less than an inch of snow. still, sparta's salt spreaders are loaded and ready to roll. from forming when temperatures drop tonight. now, this winter's el nino pattern is resulting in warmer-than-normal temperatures. so we are seeing more rain than snow. it's a welcome change for some people but not all. >> i like when it snows a little bit. it's not too much just enough to get the winter feel finally back into new jersey. >> i don't miss slipping on the ice. i don't miss shoveling. i don't miss not being able to let my dog go and run around so -- >> it's late. it's very late coming. but i feel a feeling we'll get i do. i have had a feeling we are going to be having someth

cbs 2's elise finch has the story. >> reporter: more water equals leaner students. that's the conclusion of a new study published by the journal of the american medical association pediatrics. it found thousands of new york city schoolkids lost weight and lowered their body mass index after self-serve water dispensers were placed in school. >> we looked at over 1200 schools and over a million kids in grades k through 8. they ended up being about 4 or 5 pounds lighter after the introduction of the intervention as compared to a kid in a school that didn't get a water jug. >> reporter: brian is a associate president at nyu's department of population health and coauthor of the study. >> these are not large numbers are looking for anything with an impact and the results are important. >> reporter: another doctor specializes in pediatric weight management. he says it's difficult to help children lose weight because cutting too many calories impacts growth but getting a handle on childhood obesity is critical. >> it's predicted that this generation coming up with no change
