karen anderson joins us now. karen: sources are telling me there is no indication of any problem with the manhole or the cover, no cracks, moisture or freezing that could have pushed it above the road. we' re told video was captured from highway cameras. it' s difficult to see but went flying when another vehicle drove over the manhole. inside the dot operations center, all eyes on highway cameras as inspectors go to work covers, storm grates and other roadway panels are secure. the quick action just a few hours after a manhole cover went s windshield. >> we decided to send high way crews to inspect every since opening of any kind, whether it is a grate, a manhole cover, or electronic great or whatever it is -- grate or whatever it is. the crews carrying welders in case any work has to be done. the state says inspections on manhole covers are done every two years. this one was up to date set to , be checked again in june. the last widespread emergency inspections came in july 2007 -- 2007. a storm grate smashed th

infrastructure across the city to make sure all hardware is secured properly. 5 investigates karen anderson is here with what she' karen: one source tells us it may have been dislodged and sent flying in the air one another vehicle drove over it. wasn' t a problem with the cover or did it become unsecured? we looking inside of the command center as inspections began on other manhole covers. also sewer grates and steel panels. 500 pieces of hardware in the travel lanes on highways in boston are being checked. sky 5 was over i-93 not far from the accident scene as crews inspected the covers there. depending on what inspections find they may expand the checks outside of boston. we spoke with governor baker about the immediate action the state is taking. >> we have the highway department conducting a physical eyeball inspection of the greats that are out there. they took a welder with them. if there are any issues with the going to shut them. >> hardware is inspected every two years. the one in today' s crash was due to be checked in june. incidents like this are rare but there have been simila

karen anderson is inside the high school there. is everyone going to get a chance to go? >> inside. the problem is outside where it has taken people an hour to get to the high school. one woman told me it took 42 minutes to go two miles. there are concerns about how long it took. one woman tried three times today to get here and others are still waiting to try to get in. i just spoke with the town moderator and police chief. there is one polling place in the entire town and their 18,000 registered voters. what they are going to do now is the polls are supposed to close at 7:00. they will put cruisers at the end and they will be marking the cruisers following those cars and. the town moderator has been told she' s not allowed to extend the hours so they are marking the line inroads about a quarter to a third of a mile in three different directions away from the high school. people continuing to walk in but no problem here inside. the problem is on the roads and a lot of angry voters in merrimack tonight. maria: we will keep watching the situation as it unfolds for unbelievable. ed: i

karen anderson, 5 investigates. phil: ed: nearly nine months after they voted to send him to his marathon bombing case has been released. the 7 women and 5 men came from communities ranging from cape ann to cape cod. only one of them is from boston. dzhokhar tsarnaev is being held in colorado while he appeals his death sentence. anchor: a violent morning in and two others recovering from gunshot wounds. police say they shot and killed a man after he pointed a gun at them. the injured, however, were not shot by police. investigators believe the two devon street. another man was helping his friend, shot in the leg, flee from that scene when officers confronted him, asked him several times to drop his gun, before shooting. the motive is not clear. nobody likes to take a life but if you are going to point a gun at one of our officers we are going to protect ourselves. reporter: the motives unclear. ed: this suspect in a woburn hit and run is being held on $15,000 bail tonight. police say tyson delgado was on the run aft

karen anderson, five investigates. >> local restaurant workers in a freezer during a robbery, now we have more from jorge. jorge: that is right, police believe gunmen were waiting in the article out last night -- parking lot last night. when a couple of chipotle employees went to take out the garbage, that is when the gunman went in. surveillance video shows two masked gunmen. this happened after closing, no customers around. the men, shutting the door tight, and taking another employee to the manager' s office . shows one gunman summarizing the manager, and one employee pleading with them not to shoot. they manager tussled with the gunman, and managed to run out, calling 911 from a taco bell across the street. the suspects took off with three and a dollars in cash. -- $300 --. >> the most in disconcerting thing was possibility of two firearms being used. the employees affected by this were shaken up. jorge: those employees were in a freezer for two to three minutes. a cash drawer was founded a scene. police say they have another . -- other material evidence anyone that was in the en

karen anderson, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> thanks. right now a hit-and-run caught on camera. the victim stuck on the hood of that car as the driver, the man on the right of your screen, took off. he's also a suspect, by the way, in an assault on a police officer, but he hasn't been found. todd is live with more. todd? reporter: it was a violent crime spree and part of it happened right here at main and union streets around 9:30 this morning as surveillance cameras on the building behind me were rolling. take a look. it's startling to see. you see a white sudan make a quick turn striking a man in the crosswalk. he lands on the hood. the suspect keeps driving for several hundred yards before stopping, when the 65-year-old victim falls off the hood. police have identified that driver as 29-year-old tyson delgado of winthrop. just a few moments ago, they of him to us. now, after initially stopping at the scene, delgado and a female passenger took off after police had arrived. police say delgado drove to the green street neighborhood where he ditched the car and ran. a search turn

collects karen anderson highlighted this story a year ago she' s here live with , details. karen she is no longer jane doe : she now has a name, milagros alvarado, known as millie. the last time anyone saw her she was walking on main street in fitchburg, in june of 1994. not even two months later a young man picking up trash discovered bones off a path in , the stony brook reservation in hyde park. investigators knew the remains were a woman, possibly in her 30' s. -- 20' s or 30' s. her scull had been shattered. her only identifying feature, a t-shirt. nobody, all of those years nobody knew her name. in 2014, that detectives had exhumed the woman' s body using federal funds from a grant. the hope, was that a lab in taxes could identify her using -- in texas could identify her using advances in dna analysis and facial reconstruction. the results, providing relief for the woman' s family and the detectives who took a fresh look at the case. >> it is never easy, going to somebody family and telling them their loved one is dead. these folks were under no illusion. after 22 year

karen: and i'm karen anderson in for antoinette this morning. here's the reason she's off. this little guy made his entrance this weekend. meet baby greyson, born doug: what a great name, too. greyson. everybody is healthy, feeling amazing. a little tired. mom, dad, everybody is exhausted but doing great. you went over to the hospital yesterday. danielle: i did. he is so cute. cuter in person. i want to say he was born during the "eyeopener" yesterday. 8:30 in the morning. good timing. let's talk about those temperatures outside this morning because we're starting in the lower 30's in worcester, upper 30's boston and points south. already in the mid 40's on nantucket. so you can tell it's going to be a mild afternoon. a big key ingredient with this is those winds that are out of the south and west right now anywhere from 10-20 miles an hour sustained. we're going to the low 50's in and around worcester, mid 50's through the merrimack valley. in boston the south shore, upper 40's on the cape, the islands i think seeing the lower 50's. there is some cloud cover out there this

karen: and i'm karen anderson in today for antoinette. what a difference a week makes. doug: it almost feels like good morning. danielle: yes, it does feel like spring as temperatures are starting to warm up. that's why the precipitation we're seeing is mostly in the form of rain at this point although it is still cold in the upper atmosphere. some of our stations are reporting some snow at this point. want to show you what's going on. you notice on the cape, preliminary u, points south, temperatures in the low 40's. it's just a bunch of light rain there. as you look back to the west, say, worcester county into the worcester hills and into orange, where your borderline temperatures are reporting actually snow but because the road surfaces are so warm, it's not really sticking. it may accumulate on the ground. that would really be about it. here's what happens over the next couple of hours. notice in the future cast we really clear this out by about 9:00 or so. then we're actually going to see a lot of sunshine as we head through the afternoon with a mix of sun and cloud
