these storms sitting over the bay area. tonight we do have team coverage of this rain and also the damage we're already seeing. nbc bay area's christie smith, marianne favro, pete suratos watching these storms. first, meteorologist rob mayeda has a breakdown. >> we're seeing the worst of the rain coming through san francisco. the folks doing the wise thing, slowing down their speeds and increasing the following distance there as the rain races intensify into san francisco. gusty looks more like being inside a washing machine in san jose. 60 degrees. see the rain falling all across the radar. some of the heaviest rain right now around east bay and that rain is falling at a rate of more than a half inch per hour and those are the rain rates which usually lead to localized flooding. flood advisory through 10:00 tonight, creeks and streams in the santa cruz mountains seeing rapid rises. the wind is picking up. noticing that if you step outside. wind advisory, gusts could get up to 45 miles an hour until 11:00 tonight. high surf

across the bay area, wet and slick conditions on roads. dangerous drive in many places. fender benders and spinouts reported across the area. let's get to meteorologist rob mayeda with where the heaviest rain is hitting right now. >> we're starting to see the heavy rain start up early which should be four hours significant rainfall. right now, san francisco 6 1. san jose also 61. the wind and rain putting a rinse cycle across the camera lens in the south bay. as we zoom in on the areas pinpointing the heaviest rain rates per hour right now, half inch or more in this line of rain crossing right over san francisco and for that reason causing ponding on the roads, localized flooding happening in spots right now. flood advisory up for the bay area through 10:00 tonight. also a wind advisory. wind gusts accelerate as the cold front approaches around 7:00 this evening. gusts above 45 miles per hour. other component, high surf out on the coast. wave heights of 14 to 16 feet rising to 20 feet tomorrow. so you got the wind, you got the waves and a lot of wet weather coming down as

again, less than .1 inch for most of the bay area. into the north bay, you expect heavier amounts to begin less than a quart inch. tomorrow, with the next burst of rain, that will put the north bay close to half of an inch, quart inch near napa. again -- quarter inch near unhappy. again, near napa, a quarter inch, lesser toward the tri-valley and the south bay. winds will start to kick up through the day. by this afternoon, we'll see wind gruftsusts from 15 to 30 a coastline. tomorrow afternoon, another burst of heavy wind. then winds die down. a winter weather advisory is posted through the sierra tomorrow and tuesday. traveling tomorrow, you'll run into snow and gusty winds. a wind advisory, as well. winds expected to gust 30 to 45 miles per hour. the snow amounts, we're not expecting huge amounts. four to eight inches, about 4,500 feet. you get higher than 7,000 feet, we could see a foot of new snow expected across the higher elevations. after the rain today and tomorrow, we'll delay out, leading to warming temperatures for the rest

we'll pull the bay area into view. the good news right now the north bay is getting a break from heavier rainfall. as you'll see in the scrolling seven-day forecast we have more rain coming saturday and sunday with a flash flood watch in effect for marin, napa and sonoma counties. don't let your guard down just yet. worst commute through the some nora pass. take it slow throughout that corridor. for tomorrow morning we have the chance of scattered rain in the south bay. the peninsula and east bay. but the best chance of any consistent rainfall for the morning forecast will be up here to the north bay and 47 degrees. the rain returns by the afternoon tomorrow. that will keep temperatures cold with 57 in the north bay, trivalley 59. and for the south bay coming in also in the upper 50s. the overall rain outlook has that next chance of rain once again returning tomorrow afternoon. and then what you should know about sunday is it looks like from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. light to moderate rainfall that could be rather continuo

heavy rain, fierce wind and rough weather moving through the bay area. this is a round from the bay bridge, and cozying home, on the couch. >> rob mayeda is in the weather center and the latest on the storm's path. >> the storm coming up on six inches plus of rain across the santa cruz mountains and you see that up toward boulder creek and the lexington reservoir. more than four inches of rain falling there and you can see from pacifica toward the east bay and moring a a almost three inches of rain and more than an inch of rain in san francisco and two inches in oakland and south san jose, close to two inches of rain and mainly areas of north of san francisco and they've been seeing light to moderate rain and now the radar starting to fill in with more moderate rain and later on tonight, heavier rain at times and the enhancement to some of those raindrops could be that they're also accompanied by some thunderstorms which could bring even stronger wind gusts locally overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. so our rain estimate, though, about a third

that's the moisture that's going to stream into the bay area. as the cold front moves through, it's going to pick up our winds. we're talking 45 to 50 miles an hour gusts. things are calm across the south bay. but later on this afternoon, it get active and very heavy rain. even the evening hours are going to stay stormy as well. we have a long stretch of subtropical moisture extending way past hawaii. we have one storm for today. one for tomorrow. that's tomorrow evening. it's going to be coupled with the next system for monday that's going to move through early on the day on monday let's time that out and see what i'm talking about. this is 2:00 this afternoon. widespread heavy from the north bay into san francisco including the south bay as well. that moves through and is going to continue to race through the bay area by 6:00. we're still going to be dealing with very heavy rain. some of these pockets of heavy rain could produce an inch of rain per hour. that's why we have the flash flood watch through this evening. tonight things kind of clear

tell us the bay area weather. >>> you're going to be bay area soaked soon. right now we're just looking at dry conditions. we have a few areas of thihigh, thin clouds but the fog we had earlier is out of here. we're looking at beautiful sunshine right now. hopefully you get a chance to enjoy it because once it starts raining tonight, it will be raining for the next week. get out and enjoy, the last day of 70s and definitely the last day of widespread sunshine. 67 today for san francisco, 70 for the north bay, 73 for the east bay today and 74 for the tri-valley. same deal for the south bay. now, as we move through the next couple of days as i mentioned we have a big pattern shift headed our way. this is the first storm that's going to kind of switch things up. that's really going to get rid of our 70s, our sunshine. we're headed back into the 60s and we're going to see widespread rain over the next couple of days. here's our time line which you can expect. today just increasing clouds. winds will start to pick up heading into the afternoon hours. then tonight

no matter what your zip code is throughout the bay area, blue skies, 63 degrees. east bay 60, san francisco 58. for the north bay currently 63. mostly clear start for the south bay tomorrow begin at 44, east bay 41, san francisco 50, and it will be the coldest in the north bay down to 40 degrees. you'll need a light jacket to begin as we've had to do the past couple of mornings. then once we get past 11:00 a.m. those temperatures will quickly heat up. the main reason why we'll have changes tomorrow the trough of low pressure that brought us that cold and blustery weather yesterday the wind and scattered rain is moving more off to the east. that is now clearing a pathway for this ridge of high pressure to build in across the west. you can see it's going to be a strong ridge of high pressure. in fact any signed of rainfall is not in that typical spot when we have high pressure moving in. it usually moves into washington and oregon. but it's positioned well up towards alaska. that is the reason. this rain line moving up in alaska that will have no chance of any rainfa

nbc bay area, we investigate. =ots+vo= it's now her-in the bay area. =sot= at this point, there's no evide9 =convo= >>> the zika virus has hit home. >> at this point there is no local transmission of zika virus in california or the bay area. >> now, napa county has confirmed infirst case, which is a pregnant woman who recently returned from central america. that is where she is believed to have contracted zika. he is no longer exhibiting any symptoms and they don't think the virus is spreading. most commonly transmitted through mosquitos and in central and south america. >>> the health scare now in the south bay. an archbishop wres ler diagnosed as herpes. >> he believed he contacted the virus during a wrestling match and now trying to get the state championships postponed. they are hoping south bay schools will establish better protocols to stop the spread of infectious diseases. some students wrestle even when they are infected, but then they to hide it just so that they can compete. >> kids get this. it's really not worth it for anyone to have this.

this is helping to boost the rainfall rates around the bay area as that rain comes racing into the north bay. we're seeing not just the local flood advisory for the north bay but bay area wide a flash flood watch between now and 6:00 sunday. just updated, the hydrograph, the russian river add guerneville expected to go two feet over flood stage. expected to go 34.7 late friday night into saturday as all the rain starts to get plugged into these computer models for river forks. we're starting to see rapid rises. we'll have more on how much rain we're expecting the next couple of days coming up in a few minutes. >> let's get to stephanie chuang in santa rosa. the storm bringing down a roof of a k-mart. they knew they had problems with that roof even before today. >> reporter: that's right, scott. they knew about the rain, which is hitting pretty hard in santa rosa so they had contractors come out earlier this week and also put in barriers so people would not walk underneath the section of roof over the garden center where you see it collapsed. rainwater seeped into where there was dry rot

recent storms soaking bay area communities. causing some a lot of damage. at our cameras on the bay bridge. there you go. also one on 101. this is san jose. both roads, as you can see, pretty slick. we are expecting more rain tonight. meteorologist rob mayeda is tracking the storms. well may get a little break here coming up? >> it looks like it. in the meantime, the main weather alert and warning we're tracking for the day tomorrow is the high surf advisory. you can see the buoy reports offshore of half moon bay. 17-foot wave heights off monterey bay up to 15 feet. we will see waves of 14 to 18 feet, which means large shore break and the potential for more coast and beach erosion on the opposite side of the bay area. the sierra snow up to 2 feet plus. avalanche control up around the tahoe basin tonight. and a winter storm warning still up through 11:00. you'll notice maybe another 6 inches to 10 inches of snow in the high country and wrap up the three-day period of three, almost four feet of snow. the snow and most of the active weather is off to the east.

the hills are green throughout the entire bay area. it's a beautiful sight. and the north bay at 61. tomorrow morning's forecast, i want commuters to watch out for patchy, isolated fog. we have so much ground moisture that as temperatures continue to cool off to some colder numbers, down to 46 in the south bay, 49 in san francisco and 40 in the north bay, we will have the possibility again of maybe getting some patchy, dense fog. the north bay, also the east bay would have the best chance. watch out for that tomorrow morning. in terms of rainfall totals, it has been phenomenal what we have seen happen so far in march considering the rainfall we didn't have in february. the average for the entire month of march is 4.98 inches in santa rosa. we're now at 8 in.3 inches. livermore also at average for the entire month already. this is now putting us at 167% of average for the month of march in santa rosa. 124% in livermore. great news? we may get more rainfall coming our way by this upcoming weekend. as for right now we'll continue to see sunshine for tomorrow's fo

as we look out towards the bay bridge tonight, a bit of a chill in the area, 52 in the bay area, same thing for concord. all the showers have moved south out of the bay area and it looks like we'll be dry right through the rest of the week. heard that one before. low pressure is finally beginning to kick that low out to the east, pick up some moisture on the top side of the low today, .1-inch of rain in santa rosa. when it came down, it poured. there was hail in the bay area today. winds were a factor through sunset, but now they've calmed down in pleasanton and livermore. northwesterly 10 to 15 miles an hour. as for what's next, futurecast shows that we've got fairly transparent skies, just a few clouds building up again tomorrow from which we expect not much. that's what we said yesterday, but it does look like things are drying out. so breezy and chilly overnight, milder with less wind tomorrow, a little more warming later in the week, near 70 degrees by the weekend and temperatures close to average down in the south bay, mid-60s for tomorrow. out in the east bay we'll look for mor

no injuries. >>> a bay area man jumped bail. betty yu tells us none of his neighbors seems surprised. >>> reporter: people aren't surprised to hear that their old neighbor is now a fugitive. they say he used to live in this unit behind me for about a year and in that time, stirred up trouble in this community. >> just did what he placed and lived fast and loose. >> reporter: he is talking about 28-year-old alex demetro now on the run. he was high on drugs when he test drove a corvette in southern california and hit a tree last month. the crash killed a car salesman 43-year-old warren smale in the passenger seat. alex was out on bail the next day and didn't show up in court last week. >> he was just very sketchy coming through the neighborhood with just driving fast not too friendly. >> reporter: this woman didn't want to show her -- this man didn't want to show his face on camera. >> he had this monster truck and trailer and knew he was running some kind of an operation out of here and i didn't know what it was. >> reporter: don

the worst of the heavy rain slowly making its way out of the bay area, but we are not in the clear just yet. let's check the full timeline with kari hall. >> we will still have some rain as we go through the morning, even though many areas are taking a break, at least from the heaviest downpours. the area of low pressure and this storm system wrapping up. it will be spinning more rain into the bay area for the next several hours. so looking at the timeline, this last blast of rain after a very soggy weekend may also bring in a few storms and windy and cooler later today and a couple of lingering storms also in parts of the east bay most likely. and then as we head into wednesday, the next round of rain moves in and it will stay breezy and looks like we could see some more storm systems after this. i'll detail what to expect the rest of the week and let's get an update on what is happening in the east bay now from mike. >> i'll reaffirm what you said first of all the glowy lights and wet roadways still damp and slick right now. kari said we're not done for the morning and keep that in mi

are looking at beautiful weather again today after a soggy weekend we are drying out across the bay area. here is a look now at the bay bridge. quite a few people already out there getting the day started under some mostly clear skies and a light wind. the seven-day forecast up at the bottom of the vene and you'll see how our temperatures will warm over the next several days and before you know it, we'll be having 70s all across the bay area. but now it is cool out there. we have low 40s in livermore and santa rosa, as well as napa. 47 in san jose. let's go hour by hour in san jose. at 7:00 we'll feel temperatures at 47 and then rising into the low 50s by the late morning hours. and then as we go through the day, we're lacking at some mid-60s. it will be a touch warmer than it was yesterday. and looking at the futurecast, it shows absolutely nothing over the next several days. won't be until late sunday evening when we start to see that rain moving in and looks like it will linger into the start of the day on monday. so, that's our next significant chance of rain. over the next three day

i can easily see that happening in the half moon bay area as well as mount diablo and the mount tam areas our satellite and radar. you see a little bit of light precipitation gathering. we picked that up in our live hi-def doppler radar. here's the deal. i wanted to show you this particular image because that's the core of the center of the area of low pressure. this right here the front. but look at the plume of moisture how far that extends. that's what we refer to as the atmospheric river and what's going to happen is we are just going to have kind of like a training effect of rain move into the bay area, isolated showers today but more consistent for your saturday, especially in the afternoon hours. we have a very active weather pattern going on with the jet stream guiding storms right there bull's eye into san francisco. okay. this has been a little wishy- washy as far as timing is concerned. got to admit that. here's your futurecast. here's your friday evening. and then watch saturday morning. you wake up and go what storm? that's all you got to give me here? no. by lunch hour we s

brisk around the bay area with gust y winds and hill tops. we will see a slight chance of a few mid afternoon and early evening showers. highs low to mid 60s from san francisco to south bay. napa, santa rosa, livermore. we could see an isolated shower over the hill tops. this is a pattern where you get the cold low supplying the cooling air and gusty winds. also with the cool air aloft and heating below may see pop up showers across higher elevations. 5:00 tomorrow evening. and around morgan hill towards monday evening. perhaps a better chance a few more showers around the east bay. the most likely spots to find accumulating rainfall. you can see for tuesday there is the chance we see a little bit of rain. for the sierra maybe another foot of snow there. quite a change from last year where the sierra snow pack stands at about a foot and a half deep. last year at this time just 2.4 inches, a huge change in water content from a half foot now to less than an inch of water content. with the cooling temperatures good enough to producing snow at lea

afternoon everyone will have the chance here of rainfall for the south bay 67 degrees, trivalley 65. and still some heavier areas of rain that will continue in san francisco and the north bay. this no doubt will be where we'll pick up some of the heaviest rainfall. what i want to do next is take you to the arrival times of the systems that will be coming our way over the next four to five days. as we get a look at tomorrow morning you're going to see this will be arriving in the north bay around 9:00 in the morning. the storm system after that will quickly arrive once we hit friday morning's forecast. and then by this weekend we're looking at a system on saturday at 10:00 p.m. then for sunday's forecast we'll find another area of wet weather by the evening hours. all this rainfall across the bay quarter will mean snow for the sierra. it looks like saturday, sunday and monday. we're expecting about a foot of snow up across the higher elevations. we're tracking exactly how much rainfall we'll get for the bay area in about 25 minutes. >> thank you very much, jeff. >>> there's just nothing that can justify this. not
