there have been conflicting reports of fatalities in the maalbeek subway station. we know there are injuries and loss of life. the reports of belgian prosecutor quoted in the belgian state media this was a suicide bomber at the airport. terrible morning for belgium. it is treated and internationalized as a terror attacks. we have not had official confirmation. a suicide vest from the belgian prosecutor leads you in that direction. let's go to nima elbagir on the back side of the airport. what can you tell us on this dark morning for belgium? >> reporter: we are now hearing from belgian media that at least ten were killed in the train station attack in maalbeek. we are working to confirm it. it is difficult to get a hold of security figures at the moment. a time of confusion and worry. already the dutch red cross has set up a web site called iamsafe.org. you can check in and let your families know you are safe. people are reaching out. i have been receiving messages asking if i have seen other friends here. it is a real time of heart break and worry for those in the

joining us from the maalbeek metro stop in central brussels, freelance reporter chris burns. chris, talk to me about the explosion in the metro station because it took place as atika was mentioning about an hour after the airport explosions. what do we know now about what happened? >> reporter: well, anderson, they are still trying to find out a little bit more of the clues as to who set these bombs and how they were put there. a forensics team has just gone down the street with another vehicle just moments ago. it is going through the night. they are picking through what is left of those blasts, that blast at the maalbeek metro station which is just a few blocks south of me. it happened just after 9:00 a.m. this was when the full rush hour was happening, when hundreds of people are pouring out of these metro trains to go into these european union buildings, the parliament especially is the closest one to the maalbeek station. it is a station, in fact, the train where the bomb went off, the very rear of the train, is the part of the train where i usually ride on my way to the

in maalbeek where the group of terrorists were based, they lived very close to each other. the assumption is they are linked up, isis is involved and potentially sending over these fighters to europe to carry over military style things. typically they would carry out lone-wolf attacks, now these are organized networks. the question is how big is the network in brussels, however does it stretch around europe and around the world and are there more attacks on the way from a similar network linked to this one? it's a complex operation. security sources are struggling with the amount of resources required to continue these investigations. >> you can bet they'll go to the background of the two brothers and look more for the one suspect believed spotted loose. >> these brussels terror attacks have had a chilling effect across europe. an alert from the u.s. state department is warning americans of potential risks traveling to europe. for more let's turn to jim bitterman live for us in paris. within moments of word that these attacks happened at the metro station and at the airport

learned about the naked maalbeek. what we have learned it's so insular, it is very hard for these to make any inroad with infiltrate or get information. that's where he was arrested four days ago. >> it is very difficult. it has been for some time. if they go back six, seven, eight years, i did a documentary about an al qaeda recruitment network. we went close to the station where the main international trains come into. we were surrounded by an angry crowd. the police don't go into that neighborhood because it is dangerous for them. i say go in with additional forces. parts of maalbeek has done the same thing. it is an intelligence issue eyes sis staying be hoe the radar, below the radar of the communities they're in, the communities find hard to pen straight. what was an sham's release. but it has come as a challenge for police to get new information. >> nic robertson is, thank you. back to chris now. >> all right. as nic well knows and everyone who has been covered the attacks, monthly beck is not clear how it sets

now let's bring in a reporter at politico europe who was outside the maalbeek train station when the explosion started and joins us now on the phone. tell us what you heard. >> so i was actually outside of the station after the explosions started. not quite at the time that it happened in the aftermath. i saw people being taken out of the station and being put down outside of the station on the main street in brussels that cuts through the brussels quarter, the european quarter. they were being covered in sheets. it was very difficult for police and ambulances and fire trucks to get through because of a traffic jam. rue de la waue is a one-way street and it was actually chaotic in getting help to the wounded. there were people milling around outside of the station. they had been moved on one side of the station around about 15 to 20 meters back and were filming what was happening. it was a chaotic scene. i don't know if people realized what had happened at that point. and now the street has been cleared. it's not being accessed by traffic except emergency services, and people are sti

i believe that people were dispatched because if these were the young people from maalbeek, the oddsing them the airport and the eu, it's not their style. they would have taken kalashnikovs and started shooting. this is someone who planned an attack just like you would the t pentagon or the capitol. this is people who were planning to hit the core of europe, where the message would reverberate far and wide. >> and we're waiting on investigators to clear that up. we'll figure out what we learned in time. however, it is quite obvious that if these people were living in plain sight, which is clear, i believe, everybody can include that, at least the paris attackers were -- and we'll wait for the identity of those based on the surveillance picture, but they could have cased the joint months ago. >> yeah, so we'll see if the attackers today have been long-term residents and as well for abdeslam, he came back from france, but he moved around just the way osama bin laden first moved around. so he wasn't sitting there the whole time. i think he got squashed out by the raid the week before. s

one said to be mere the maalbeek area where as suspected on friday abdeslam was arrested. in the last couple of days police said they were looking for an accomplice. so a couple of different scenarios perhaps playing out here. one is that these bombings were for the arrest of abdeslam. the other scenario is that perhaps there were accomplices already in the brussels area, perhaps plotting other attack bus clearly with devices in their possession to carry out those attacks and they may have felt they may have then been compromised. their identities and locations have been compromised by the arrest of abdeslam and they decided to carry out any attack, some attack just so they would not be arrested before they could cause carnage. and these are picture prs the brussels airport. people milling about. keep in mind there must have been thousands of people trying to get on flights and thousand os of others arriving at that airport. those people were taken off planes and sent to the tarmac until they could be safely evacuated from the airport. right now. in washington. kwlur heari
