independents broke for sanders, young people broke for sanders. people who don't like the way u.s. trade policies felt for the middle class broke for sanders. this has not to be devastating but a disappointing morning for the clinton campaign. >> yeah. it's an immensely disappointing morning for the clinton campaign. they still believe, i think, that this is in their favor. that hillary clinton is on course to become the democratic nominee. that doesn't change the fact that sanders' ability to continue winning these states, these states and the rest, he'll do very well among young voters who are the future of the democratic party and his ability to make inroads with african fe americans in michigan. all of this is setting off the alarm bells for hillary clinton. of course the key issue here, it's the one that the clinton campaign needs to focus on the most, how do you appeal to economic insecurity, job insecurity, that is something where bernie sanders has had a consistent and clear message. hillary clinton needs to focus not so much on taking on bernie sanders or pivoting the gene

bernie sanders with an even wider margin so far, 81.6% for sanders, hillary clinton with 18.4%. this is the percentage of delegates that are going to them, not the popular vote in those states. we're giving the information as we get them from the states. let's go to paul in anchorage, alaska. at the site of one of these caucuses. paul, i know you're only in one precinct. you have an idea how turnout compares this caucus season as opposed to 2008? >> reporter: we do. they are pacing ahead. they believe they are going to shatter a record. by the way, jake, actually they combined 14 of the most populous districts in all of alaska, anchorage, into west anchorage high school, so just here alone we watched the democracy in action in quite a few precincts. they are getting ready to elect delegates, to the state convention. and everybody's trying to lobby for the reasons they want to represent the democratic party here. and by the way, you are talking about the popular vote. from what we understand of the five districts that we calculated in this building alone, it was bernie sanders, 7

bernie sanders hopes it will be sanders' saturday after his wins in washington state and alaska. sanders is looking to make it a trifecta in hawaii, to make a dent in hillary clinton's significant lead in the delegate race in hawaii. senator sanders has a key endorsement from congresswoman tullsy gabbard. she quit her position at the democratic national committee to support him. 142 delegates at stake in this day's round of voting. hawaii's another state where democrats split their delegates proportionally so clinton and sanders expected to get something out of this contest. donald trump's won hawaii's republican caucuses on march 18th and his republican counterparts have the day off. stephanie elam is at a caucus site in honolulu. stephanie, i don't know how you got this gig, but congratulations. good work on getting the assignment to cover the honolulu caucuses. tell us what's going on there. >> reporter: you've got to win one every now and then, jake. look at the tonout here. this is what's going on here in honolulu. they are talking about record turnout potentially here. they

sanders is doing so well.e population centers of seattle, tacoma, olympia and spokane. let's go north to alaska where we find our own paul vercammen in anchorage. also at a caucus site. paul, what's going on where you are? >> reporter: well, this gentleman, steve, the district chairman of district 20 which is down town anchorage, literally counting the votes as we speak. if you recall from the live shots earlier at the bottom of the auditorium. now we're in the balcony where this down town district is counting. and this is the hillary side. as we told you it's not traditional caucus where people sit around a card table, for example, and discuss their views. they are now voting. so they are counting it up. as you saw proportionally. let's give you the numbers, districts 27 and 28, anchorage, it was 73% for bernie sanders, 27% for hillary clinton. and as we look at the counting that's going on now. i'm going to give you perspective, jake, these are all hillary supporters here. then if we go ahead and we'll see v

senator sanders saying, excuse me.oth candidates cutting each other in a way that we really haven't seen in past debates, ari. then there were some really fascinating, interesting moments. senator sanders just moments ago talking about his religion for the first time. i think one of the only times we've heard him really talk about this in-depth, saying that his entire father's family was wiped out in the holocaust. he got very personal. secretary clinton talking about her faith as well. i think all in all, the takeaway from this debate, you had both of the candidates very firmly standing their ground. i think it's going to be tough to pick out a winner tonight, because they both had strong positions and defended them vigorously. i think it helped senator sanders a little bit. because again, the momentum, he came into the evening with momentum. i think he did carry that through and continue it through the evening. we'll have to see, though, with the folks waiting to come out in the spin room. we'll get everyone's take w

we just heard from bernie sanders. whatever the final number is, this is still considered a big win for him tonight. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. i mean, the sanders campaign feels like this gives them a lot of momentum going into these series of contests coming up here in a week, wolf. he's really looking toward ohio, even before seeing his showing tonight, his campaign felt that his message attacking hillary clinton for her past support of some -- even before seeing how it played here in michigan. that's certainly we should watch going into the next week here. i want to talk about some of the polling. the sanders campaign on friday did their final internal polling. they found that hillary clinton was up by what i was told by one aide was high single digits. that was on friday. they didn't bother polling over the weekend because they found it really difficult to get ahold of young people, which are so key to his sort of black -- his numbers did not reflect his support of minority voters. >> ohio, one of the big co

sanders: i rest my case.ave talked -- and i'm sure it is similar in this room -- i have talked to people in my own state. a young woman wanted to become a doctor, went to medical school, is practicing primary health care to low income people. exactly the kind of doctors we need, she graduated medical school $300,000 in debt. talk to a young dentist in iowa, graduated dental school, $400,000 in debt. talked to a young man in iowa, left college after two years, $60,000 in debt. talked to a guy in nevada -- this is incredible -- he's 35 -- 55 years old and has been paying off student debt for 25 years. he is more in debt today than when he started. bernie sanders had more than 30%.ou've been doing some reporting on the clinton campaign, sort of the autopsy. michigan has only been over for a few hours, but they're trying to figure out what they did wrong. >> i think the bottom line is, campaigning hard matters. even in a state where the clinton campaign thought that they would do well, we saw signs that they were not campaigning as aggressive as they had in nevada or south carolina, for example. those count when people go to the polling stations. clinton only campaigned in places like detroit and flint, and neglected the other parts of the state. that's something the clinton campaign thinks could have hurt her. the clinton campaign now believes that perhaps the former secretary of state started focus on the general election a little too much. she didn't remain focused on many of the democratic nominations. and you could tell in her tone she was aiming her rhetoric at donald trump. often not naming him but it's clear who she was talking about, and letting it get a

[ applause ] nafta supported by the secretary cost us 800,000 jobs nationwide, tens of thousands of jobs in the midwest. permanent normal trade relations with china cost us millions of jobs. >> certainly you have constituents who worry about the impact of the trade deals she supported. >> sure. well, first let me say, and i think -- i guess i feel as a woman as well that she should be held accountable for her votes. you know, not her husband's, or somebody else's votes, and so on, regardless of whether or not she was, you know, supportive of her husband's presidency. the reality is, for her, the big vote was cafta, on the central america agreement. and she voted no. when she had the opportun

sanders: you're right. if you look at people who have given up looking for work and who are working part-time, real unemployment is close to 10%. and here's something else we do not talk about at all, the media has nothing to say about it, that is youth unemployment in this country. kids who graduated high school between 17-20, if those kids are white, 33% are unemployed or underemployed, latino 36%, african-american 51%. and if anyone here thinks there is not a direct correlation between that outrageously high rate of youth unemployment and the fact that we have more people in jail than in any other country, you would be missing an important point. here is radical idea number two, we are going to invest in our young people -- for our young people, in jobs and education, not jails and incarceration. bernie sanders in massachusetts is doing very well. hillary clinton is doing well in boston and the boston suburbs. this race is close but it is a race that bernie sanders had thought would be part of his five states that he had a chance of winning tonight. this would be a major setback if hillary clinton wins it. a couple of states are that are still out. the minnesota caucus was thought to be a place where bernie sanders was doing well. he is hoping to have a victory there to make up for some decisive victories that hillary clinton had in the south. in the other state for bernie sanders, is c, lorado. he is up by 14 points. a sizeable count there. the whole argument from the bernie sanders campaign is we're going to win states outside of the south, we will show that when it comes to whiting class voters the progressers are moving towards us. they still have a lot of work to do with african-americans. it shows that some broke from hillary clinton four to one. voters under the age of 30 broke by the ratio of three to one. here is the m

bernie sanders will get five or six. she will add to her 200 delegate margin by about 20 by the time all of the votes are counted tonight. hillary clinton will gain in terms of her path to the nomination even though michigan is a huge setback because the sanders campaign is arguing for democrats to win in november they have to get those votes in the states of michigan. until she can do that there's not the same sense of inevitability about her nomination. this has been a big night on the republic side for donald trump. he has won 14 states in the nomination contest and number 13 tonight is michigan. donald trump won 36 to 24. this was a double digit margin. much wider than people had participated. it underscores the donald trump that agrees with bernie sanders in terms of being ingredients free trade and naft and transpacific partnership. that economic message is playing well in placements like michigan and you're seeing democratic cross-over voters who like what he is saying and they registered in the primary tonight. d

bernie sanders won there 86% to 14. oklahoma, another decisive win for bernie sanders. 51 to 41. the majority of the 38 will go to bernie sanders. keep in mind, watch the margins that hillary clinton was able to pull down in the south. the biggest prize of the night, 67 to 30; in other words, 222 delegates and hillary clinton will get most of them but two out of every three. a much bigger spread than bernie sanders was hoping for. georgia, another win for hillary clinton there, 71 to 28. exit polls found that hillary clinton took four out of every five african-american voters. that explains the huge spread in georgia. alabama a, 78 to 18. it underscores that bernie sanders is not able to break through. that is why the delegate count in alabama will be a large spread. tennessee hillary clinton walking away with 66 to 32. keep in mind these 30 point margins mean a significant amount of delegates. virginia, this was a race that bernie sanders thought he might be able to stay close, but hillary clinton is walking away with the majority of delegates in the state of virginia. that is 2
