nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter, ted greenberg, explains why firefighters had an especially hardime putting the fire out. >> reporter: flames raced across rooftops soon after a bolt of lightning jolted people out of bed in cape may. >> it was the biggest boom i've heard. i mean, it felt like a bomb had gone off in our yard. >> reporter: they live across the street from where lightning struck a chimney on st. james place around 1:00 a.m. the fire quickly spread side to side burning through two adjoining townhouses. one was vacant, a woman in the other got out safely. >> it was scary. >> reporter: the first alert weather team tracked hundreds of strikes just before the fire overnight. cape may easily saw the most lightning as the line of storms moved through our area. >> when it comes to lightning strikes, it's definitely no joke. >> reporter: shortly before the lightning strike in cape may, a fire broke out at this home in neighboring lower township, so that created a logistical challenge for firefighters. >> they called us for help as they normally do, and we had to turn them dow

ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >>> and happening now, the woman accused of kidnapping a baby from the king of prussia mall is in court to learn more about her past and alleged abduction. authorities say she took a seven week old from the food court back in march. she met the boy's mother at the mall and took the infant while the woman was distracted by her other child. police found the baby several hours later at an apartment in chester coupe. nbc 10 is inside the courtroom for today's hearing. she says it's delayed while they look for a court reporter. she'll bring us updates as soon as the hearing ends. >> meantime, new information about the inmate on the run in new jersey that has several communities on alerpt. he was in prison for killing his own baby. he broke out of prison in winslow township tuesday and spotted on pharmacy surveillance video yesterday, but he has not been seen since. he could be headed north towards cliffton where he's originally from. we are following the search this afternoon. we are live with new information on his dark past. >> reporter: that's right. before ser

ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >>> this just in from south philadelphia, video from the scene of a fire where crews rescued a man from his burning row home. the fire start the here at 9th and wharton streets around 2:30 this afternoon. firefighters found the elderly man unconscious, in an upstairs bedroom. neighbors were there as crews brought the man out and revived him. >> eventually, they did bring the older gentleman out and the firemen were beating on his chest, trying to revive him. he's in serious condition but alive. >> the plan is in critical condition. we did check with the hospital. it's not clear what started the fire. >>> a police officer faces charges after a traffic stop sent a woman to the hospital and left her phone shattered. authorities say the officer dejesus pulled over a young couple, as they were headed to a barber shop last month. the woman recorded the traffic stop on her phone. video shows the officer grabbing and smashing the phone on the ground, then hitting the woman in the head. at first the victims faced charges but today the district attorney announce the
