watts hall is on the north side of campus.tuation is taking place now. you have the columbus police and the franklin county sheriff's office which is located not far from the university. you have multiple police departments involved in this. in addition i see uniformed units which is located there in columbus, ohio. martha: ohio state university has 60,000 undergraduates. it's a sprawling campus for those who have not been there. and it's quite an operation to get your arms around this whole thing. we assume from the early reports, rod, that it is one shooter. is there any reason to think anything other than that? >> no. i can tell you the police when they respond to situations like this, we anticipate based on the number of calls we get from people in the area and other witnesses, witness accounts. we anticipate it will be the amount of shooters people say. but we always prepare. we always prepare for the worst. when the police responded to this situation this morning they went in with the thinking maybe it was one shooter bu

i had classes when i went to ohio state in watts hall. to give a perspective the area, there is a lot of students around the area be so clams room buildings in that area. it is not unusual to have a large number of people in that area. what i'm a little surprised by if a gun was used in the situation, sounds is like it was, more people wasn't hurt. i guess the good news in all of that is the response by the police department. the investigators, their first responsibility is to try to determine who was the shooter, where did he get the weapons, what was his motivation and whether or not there may be any other victims out there, maybe at another crime scene or something like that, so that is the the typical way we investigate these case, sandra. sandra: okay. also coming into our newsroom in addition what we're learning from the fire department that 10 people have been sent to the hospital and one listed in critical condition, this just coming in according to the columbus fires department, the suspect is deceased and the body is still at th

university, there is a lot of activity inside watts hall. we've also learned from our reporter on the ground that there is an equal amount of police activity across campus at a parking garage structure, where in the last half hour, where we're seeing this video here and from the video i've seen, it looks like we're looking at video outside the parking garage structure, so we know at least two men who we're looking at now are being taken away in handcuffs by police. i can also tel you that according to ohio state university's website, in just the last few minutes, they have put out that the campus is open, but about 14 buildings remain closed. all classes have been canceled for the day. and they've alerted students and staff that they will continue to see a very heavy law enforcement presence on the campus. just to recap. ohio state university is the country's third largest university with more than 65,000 students. you can understand the fear that is reverberating across this college campus. we're going to stay on this story and share the la

arresttan drove a car into a group of pedestrians outside watts hall. that's ohio state's chemical engineering building. witnesses say he got out and started stack people with a buffer knife. nine people were hurt until police were able to shoot that information about artan but first let's send it to bob jones in columbus. you just spoke with the police chief about this investigation. what did she say? >> reporter: lee, we caught up with the columbus police chief this afternoon. tonight she says she is very grateful that all of the victims in this case are going to survive this horrific attack that happened this morning. six of the victims are being treated here at os sue's wexner -- at osu's wexner medical center. we're told the victims either had stab wounds from a butcher knife or injuries from getting hit by a car. this afternoon police chief kim jacobs said it was a chaotic seen but she credited the first responders for taking swift action and pointed out that faculty and staff did a great job getting students to safety, evacuating the area and tak

i'm at ohio state right outside of watts hall and there was a guy who crashed his car into a bunch of people and ran out with a knife taking down people." operator: "franklin county 911." caller: "yeah. i'm on the ohio state campus. there's been a--i think there's some type of terror attack...because they guy ran across through a crowd of students. he did it purposely." the 18-year old man who attacked students at ohio state may have ties to a somali terror group. monday's incident left eleven people injured, at least one critically. the suspect was killed by a police officer less than a minute after the attack began. fox's kelly wright has the latest from washington. <

west of college on the north academic campus in front of watts hall, around 9:52 a.m., the emergencyer got a report that a vehicle had struck pedestrians. at 9:53, an osu pd officer called out on the radio shots were fired. he engaged the suspect who had gotten out of the vehicle after hitting pedestrians. the suspect cut multiple individuals. the officer engaged the suspect and shot and killed the suspect. the first buckeye alert went out at 9:55 to alert the campus community there was an emergency. many officers from various different jurisdictions all over the county and outside the county responded immediately. by 11:00 a.m., the shelter in place notification was lifted, and the law enforcement personnel in the area continue to investigate multiple other things. there are a few buildings that are still closed. we don't have reports of anything else. we believe the threat was ended when the officer engaged the suspect. very fortunate that an osu officer was there and took quick action and we believe that injuries were minimized as a result of that. we will continue probably to hav
