nic robertson, let's get to you on this. it seems the president is speaking to a united states audience. his advisers might remind him he is speaking to the globe. how are those types of remarks likely to be met by world leaders as he heads to the g-20? >> reporter: you know, i think president trump has said so much to his domg audience that the -- his domestic audience that the world leaders have pretty much formed their own conclusion about what sort of leader he is and which directions he's going in. certainly that's the view of the europeans. they need to be more united. they need to take the sort of -- the moral compass of the world on climate change, on free trade, on prosperity, a win-win situation, globalization helps not only ceos but helps the worker on -- on the factory floor. there's a real sense that there's a difference of opinion. i don't think anything that president trump said today is going to change that. that view is pretty clear. what this does leave us open to here clearly is that meeting with putin. we

want to bring in international diplomatic editor nic robertson. good morning.he world will be closely watching this trump/putin meeting. given how interconnected this g20 is, what are the chances the encounter could make a difference, could have far-reaching effects? >> reporter: if you had to look for one area where both are keen to cooperate, syria might be the one. on the issue of fighting isis, there's more of a meeting of minds on that than on anything else. certainly the kremlin seems to have indicated it doesn't expect to bend president trump's mind on, crane. of course -- on ukraine. of course, nikki haley, ambassador to the u.n., has been very, very clear that the fresh hold there is for -- the threshold there is for russia to get troops out. on the issue of syria, russia said that it is in favor of fighting isis, a big issue to president trump. there could be cooperation there. of course, the pentagon's been skeptical of russia, on claims of tackling isis. it says most of the air strikes in syria are supporting regime of president bashar al assad. you

we are joined by our diplomatic editor, nic robertson. we heard what the president said and did not say. he did not mention the word challenges, nic. what about vladimir putin's side? i was struck that he almost tried to diminish the significance of the meetings saying one conversation is never enough. >> reporter: you know, the kremlin sort of really, that would be coming. there wouldn't be enough time to get into a full discussion about ukraine but for president trump to understand what it is russia believes is the real situation in ukraine and the real necessity of their involvement there. so, you know, that was framed fwi kremlin. i think there was a line there from president trump that would be valued by the kremlin when he said it's an honor to be there to meet president putin. this is what president putin wants. he does want to be valued on the international stage by someone who in global affairs plays a significant role. one of the things that they are expected to discuss is syria. russia has been making overtures toward the unite

we want to go to nic robertson as well. nic, what are we hearing from angela merkel as we wrap up the g20 here? we know this was set initially as interconnectivity being part of the theme. and the headline of potentially the isolation of the u.s. in the multilateral deals that have been struck. what are we hearing from angela merkel? >> angela merkel is the host here, and she does the sort of final big wrap-up. to jim's point about president trump not speaking, president putin able to define his message, to a degree, angela merkel was able to put a cap on everything that was agreed and disagreed here. the very important and big-ticket items here, trade there was a huge concern going into this. a difference over the u.s. position, and the other juntcy members' positions on trade. president trump said free trade is okay, but it must be fair trade. angela merkel, the big-ticket item on trade said there's an agreement that keeps markets open, fights protectionism, so that's very much if you will taking a position that's against

nic robertson live from abu dhabi. good morning. meetings between the president and several asian leaders now very much under the microscope. how has the dynamic changed for the g-20? >> reporter: i think president trump's tweet last night says it all. perhaps china will put a heavy move on north korea to end this nonsense once and for all. his expectation is now that china is going to have to play a lead role. the g-20 will be a place where he can hope to achieve that. let's not forget that he has existing tensions that have just ratcheted up in the past few days with china selling $1.4 billion worth of weapons systems to taiwan. he has put sanctions, the united states has put sanctions on a chinese bank for not -- for them not sanctioning north korea strongly enough, not implementing sanctions strongly enough. there are issues of trade between the united states and china. and then bring that into the bigger context of the g-20, as you said. president putin will meet with president trump for the first time. the issue there that eve

and cnn's nic robertson. david, to you first, when the president says prior to the meeting that there's something needs to be done. and there may be some successes. what are you expecting trump to be considering a win out of this meeting with xi? >> it's not really clear to me and the whole broader dynamic of all this attention on russia kind of just shocks me. again russia is the 12th largest economy in the world. the russian economy is roughly the size of the economy of new york state alone. texas has a bigger economy than russia. texas alone. california and whereas china is this huge player economically, the critical player in north korea. and it's you know there's accommodation towards russia, but confrontation towards china. so not much came out of this meeting. a colleague of mine at the "new yorker" suggested a new approach where china and the u.s. could work together, possibly involving economic aid, via china to north korea in exchange for stopping these tests. but none of these ideas appear to be co

nic robertson in hamburg, germany, where the g-to will take place. what are we expecting in this one-on-one between the president and the russian leader? >> reporter: the kremlin gave us an indication, they said there wouldn't be time for president putin in this meeting with president trump to fully explain the russians' views and understand about ukraine. you can read between the lines very clearly, they'll talk about it, don't expect anything to happen. on syria, the russians are saying they want to talk about a pathway to peace, how to get peace there, they're promoting some peace talks and after talking to syrian opposition the past few days, they say those talks are dead, but clearly russia and putin are going to try to push their agenda, saying we will work with president trump on a peace process in syria. so i think we can expect those topics to come up, but don't expect any big ground to be covered. undoubtedly the pair of them will mention north korea as well. >> and of course president trump will also meet with the chinese leader xi jinping
