but even though the air mass above the snow is ice cold it's warmer below a deep blanket of snow insulates and prevents things underneath from freezing. plants can survive the winter because the water they need remains liquid. and people. a billion of us are dependent on melt water. so what if we suddenly had no more snow. in a world without snow northern temperatures would jump by five degrees celsius. weather patterns would change. warm humid air would flow from the atlantic to germany bringing miserable rainy weather. even though it's comparatively warmer the ground begins to freeze permafrost spreads. without its insulating snow cover ground temperatures fall so low in winter the soil can never quite thought out and summer plants and animals die. forests disappear from a large swathes of the northern hemisphere leaving only sure obes moss and lichen. further south melt water supplies fail wide expanses of arable land in asia or in north america become barren. drinking water become scarce. lack of moisture turns the remaining forests into tender boxes. the world becomes a parched husk.

we have a very cold air mass which is going to move in. here's the reason why we have our ridge of high pressure peel off to the west. it's only a matter of time before some really cold air in canada gets dragged down by that ridge. most of the time it goes east of the sierra and east of the cascades and the northwest. not this time. it's going to move right down into northern california giving us some very cold air next week. tomorrow not cold. sunny and mild. saturday not cold, sunny and warm with highs in the low 70s. here comes a boundary on sunday which won't give us rainfall but on the other side of that boundary it's going to get blustery and quite chilly. temperatures climbing for two more days. we're cooler and breezy beginning sunday. that's the big transition day. how about highs in the 50s next week. concord 68 tomorrow. san francisco 62. we're warmer on saturday. by sunday afternoon it's going to be windy and cooler. president's day not even hitting 60 degrees. and next week well below average. not listed there the overnight lo

we'll get a couple inches and look at that arctic air mass. we drop from 37 sunday to 5 in tahoe. the windchills will be below zero if you head out on the slopes early monday morning. the breezes will taper and so will the snow shower. here's an area of high pressure dominating our weather. it's getting shoved off to the west. with clockwise flow we have arctic express headed our way. it will leave the moisture to the north. you can see a lot in the form of snow. the pink, a wintry mix. the white, the snow. you can see the snow sunday in tahoe. then it starts to taper as we head towards monday morning. there's a slight chance we may have a stray shower bump into the mountains. something definitely i'll be watching monday morning when i'm here with you if you don't have the day off. breezes are fine. saturday. sunday morning we're already up to 20, 25 miles an hour. 30 to 35 by the time they max out as we head towards sunday night into monday morning. those winds, 32 miles an hour in san francisco. my accuweather seven-day forecast, we drop from the 70s saturday to the 50s sunday.
