let me ask you about what we know about these unwitting americans and the message is here in light ofrd. >> we don't know a lot. we know many were paid to stage protest or dress up as hillary clinton at trump rallies and do kind of disruptive things like that. other than that, we don't know anything other than that they were supporters of donald trump, presumably, or supporters of bernie sanders who essentially met these russian actors online, thinking that they were also americans. in terms of this kind of talking point that's emerged about how there was no collusion proven in this at all by robert mueller, that's, of course, kind of a strongman argument because this indictment -- rod rosenstein was very, very careful to say it was only in this indictment that, you know, there was nothing in this indictment specifically that said that any one american had cooperated with the russians or coordinated with them in any way. of course, that leaves open the possibility that future indictments, he will then lay out, you know, potential coordination between americans and the russians and tha

that's a statute that, while there are unwitting aides that are mentioned here, that could also easily include witting aides knowingly joining a conspiracy. the other thing that was interesting in the statute, they cite -- but i couldn't find in my fast read of it -- aiding and abetting statute. i didn't see any aiders or abetters in here. obviously at one point they were contemplating them. and that's, again, where you could find, as sarah mentioned earlier the people who were unwitting might have also included people who were very knowingly engaging in this conspiracy. those are my key reactions. it's going to be difficult and possible to deny. and this is something that the special counsel can build on. >> so, if i hear you correctly, you're saying basically that this still leaves the door open to possible collusion? i've spoken to white house officials who say, look, these indictments say that no one from the trump campaign wittingly worked with any of these russians, rod rosenstein came out today. doesn't this show that there was no collusion? it sounds like you have a different t

so they were putting together rally ideas and posters and the unwitting american public was followingas they were doing that by fictional social media accounts. the overall effort here is clearly to increase discord, to sow dissent among the american people, and to use hot button social issues to do so. what about the involvement of a particular character, allegedly called putin's chef? i am not an expert on the russian side of this, but clearly somebody who is that much intimately connected with the russian president is a problem because it typifies that this is a russian lead and directed operation. it seems clear this is not some freelancing effort, given the number of people involved and the amount of money involved, $1.5 million a month at one stage. i want your reaction to these indictments tonight. i think the indictments are an extraordinary insight into how the russians think, how they think about disinformation, us elections, and it should offer us some really useful background for how they think in other countries and how they act in other elections because we know they do
