let's start with rob marciano and those dangerous conditions. rob, good morning. >> hey, good morning, whit. boy, it seems just like last year we got done with the fire season in california which was nothing short of disastrous and these scenes are eerily similar and they're just as startling. just a couple of homes back there standing, the washer and dryer still smoldering in this home. 500 structures most of which were homes have been destroyed. you get up close to some of these cars, you see the force that is required to blow some of these windows out, the metal and aluminum melted and you imagine how frightening it must have been when people got the call they had to just flee their homes in a hurry to get away from these flames. the carr fire taking over redding, california. a wall of flames causing emergency evacuations. >> about 100-foot wall of flame coming on to the south end of snow lane. >> reporter: the blaze taking a deadly turn, killing two firefighters. >> the struggle now is we're mourning as we battle. >> reporter: three more fire

abc's senior meteorologist rob marciano on the fire lines tonight, starting us off. >> reporter: tonight, the fire threat growing. new evacuations in northern california as authorities warn residents living near the deadly carr fire to "get out with your life." >> you cannot predict where this fire is going to go next. >> reporter: the fire exploding in size overnight. over 80,000 acres now charred. over 500 structures destroyed. and nearly 5,000 more threatened. the fire burning so hot, it's producing huge tornadolike whirls of flame, ash and combustible gas. the abundance of smoke, visible from space. the smoke is thick, hanging in the air, making it extremely difficult to breathe. more than 3,000 firefighters throwing everything they have at the flames. according to the associated press, the fire claiming five lives, including a great-grandmother and two children. 38,000 residents forced to flee their homes. >> i have literally everything that i can think of that's valuable and shoved it my car as fast as possible. >> reporter: in the confusion, some families losing track of loved one
