let's take alot the two fires burning in mendocino. you can see how much smoke they're pumping out and how close t each other. making its way to the bay area. you can see it right here. a look at our traffic camera in dublin. tonight we have team coverage of the fires. we start with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff, we are talking about the wind and the smoke coming down here to the bay area. how bad is it going to get? >> i think we're going to continue with the smoke as we hit saturday's forecast. winds also picking up, at least on the highest ridges, around 500 to 1,000 feet. we will see the winds gust up. i want to look at the smoke right now. it is coming from three different fires. again, the mendocino complex fires, also the carr fire in redding. let's get this out here. smoke is extremely complicated when it starts moving throughout the atmosphere. what i see happening right now is the upper level wind is actually taking the most unhealthy air and moving it off towards the east. we're getting kind of this residual smoke mo

the mendocino complex fire is ending haze throughout much of northern california. luckily for us, it's in the higher levels of sfooefr. -- of the atmosphere. look how gray it is. you have the low clouds and smoke in the upper level. 4,000 feet up is where the smoke is hanging. the breeze is pushing in the clouds coverage around the bay and coastline and that's protecting places like san francisco from the smoke. here's the current air quality. the areas in red are unhealthy. and it's in the moderate to good range. and you can get a little bit of relief. the smoke is moving in because of a northwest wind direction. later on tonight, it will shift to a west direction: and that will push the smoke across places like sacramento and lake tahoe. good to moderate for the air quality. the smoke is sitting up high in the atmosphere. right now, the low in the atmosphere would be this right here. we have clouds hanging over the golden gate bridge. stubborn clouds and 55 in san francisco. concord, 76. afternoon highs combpt expected -- expected to hit 95. santa rosa, 92. san jo

as we move into what's causing the smoke here in the bay area, it's the mendocino complex. the most growth on the eastern side of the fire. currently, 90 degrees. good flnews tomorrow, not too gt eye, gusty. no major wind event expected for the fires, but another hot day. it's going to feel strange outside. we have the fog we'll be dealing with, the smoke, and then we'll get cooling for the morning, temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. nowhere near our classic, nice, crisp mornings due to the fog. you'll also have the haze fort east bay, san francisco and the north bay. by the afternoon, temperatures do warm up. we'll stay out of the 100s, but notice in the south bay we'll still be warm in morgan hill and gilroy with low 90s, cupertino at 82. go by the bay, anywhere from 84 in fremont to 70 in oakland. the spot to go would be the coastline. the ocean breeze kicks up, you'll get nice, clean air. 60s from the embarcadero to ingleside. and for the north bay, 61 at point reyes. and over to napa we have it at 84 degrees. san francisco will stay in the 60s the next few days.

it's hazy because of the mendocino complex fires. highs are below average everywhere today and that trend continues through the week. sunrise 6:30 a.m. and 7:54 p.m. for the sunset tonight. highs today, below average with 58 in half moon bay, 73 mountain view, hayward 65 degrees, and warmer inland with 84 in brentwood. we are cooler closer to the water, 81 degrees in pleasanton today, 62 in san francisco, and santa rosa 75 degrees. we have one of 90s here, 91 for ukiah. so, significantly cooler than yesterday and last week. seven-day forecast shows temperatures fluctuating just a few degrees. that's the only changeup you'll see in the next seven days, low to mid-70s around the bay and upper 50s along the coast. we'll start the day off with fog and low clouds, then in the afternoon that will retreat, keeping coastline temperatures nice and cool. could have some fog around the golden gate bridge, the fog you're seeing around the bay. inland areas, nice and sunny and really just pleasant temperatures. >>> a father hit by a truck and drag

santa clara county fire chief tony boden said his crews finding the mendocino complex fires had their internet speeds slowed down. the carrier suggested that it upgrade to more expensive data plans when alerted to it. verizon called it a customer support mistake. santa clara county fire and todaassemblycommittehearing. sp hooa five months after the deadly confrontation. 32-year-old joshua was killed by four officers back in march after they found him sleeping in an alley. someone called 911 because they thought needed medical help. arriving officers saw was unconscious but also had a gun. according to police, something happened that convinced officers he posed an immediate threat so they opened fire killing him. his friends spoke out at an oakland police commission meeting last night. >> just think about that. that someone called to get help for someone who needed it and it resulted in his death. >> oakland police said they are not ready to release any more details, body cam video or any other evidence because the case is still open. >>> attorney general jeff sessions' time on the job

the biggest, the mendocino complex fire. firefighters say it won't be completely out until september. we'll have continuing coverage of the fires and smoke tonight. jeff, any relief in sight? >> i think we could be pushing our way toward some possible relief as we head into the next 48 hours. right now we have two things happening on my spliatellite ma. all of this out here is fog. and right here across california is the smoke that continues to linger not only in the bay area but through pretty much all of california at this point. storm ranger, mobile doppler radar set up to about 1200 pulses per second. it's bouncing off these smoke particles and it's showing up as this gray area here. those are the particles making it difficult for us today and likely as we head into tomorrow. i am still forecasting smoke tomorrow, heaviest in the north and east bay. smoke particles as well for the peninsula and east bay with a spare the air in effect. this area out here will kick up the wind, should help to at least get a good portion of

the mendocino complex 96 tomorrow, more sunshine and more dry. the carr fire 105 degrees. talk about a change in our weather here approaching the weekend coming up. >>> new 5:00 a bay area waterway is the focus of a bureaucratic tug-of-war. the feds want navarro creek to be considered a fish habitat, but the local water district tells kpix5 that there is one big problem with that plan, emily. >>reporter: essentially fish cannot live out of water. the navarro creek runs into and out of stafford lake. you can see just how low the reservoir levels are. i can tell you in the creek it is even worse. certainly biologists say it is not sufficient for a fish habitat. when it comes to fish habitat navarro creek is missing the most important component, water . >> you do not need to be a biologist to realize it will be very difficult for fish to survive. >> that is not what it 2015 study says. it says the creek should be able to sustain about 1100 endangered steelhead trout making the creek and recovery habitat. that means any work the north marine water district wants to do is under

breezy conditions definitely won't help firefighters battling the mendocino complex fires. mike, it just went into effect, right? >> just started at 11:00. we expect those conditions to ramp up and be critical for quite a time frame across parts of the state. not only in mendocino county but you can see up near redding and all up and down the sierra. a little closer to home in lake county and they could gust up to 30 miles per hour. so we're talking a 36 hour period of heightened awareness and readiness and that if evacuation orders come you need to go immediately. so you need to be prepared. right now ware just watching the temperatures ramp up. notice the winds are calm just about 5 miles per hour. so in the next couple of hours those are going to start cranking up around 20 to 30 miles per hour, and they get erratic in the valleys and they're going to blow from northwest to southeast. so if you live southeast of these fires you need to be prepared also. >>> firefighters in shasta county say they're making progress. the fire has burned nearly 132,000 acres sense it began l
