nbc's hans nichols got an aerial tour of the damage around camp lejeune. hans, what was that like? >> reporter: marlie, here at camp lejeune they've done the initial assessment of how bad the damage is to the base and also the surrounding area. earlier yesterday they went up on these big ospreys, the commanding general trying to get an aerial view, a lay of the land. just what sort of recovery they're going to have to do on base before they start helping with the rest of the community. the navy also sent some helicopters up. overall, the military wants to get an assessment of the area. and then they're going to move forward and try to see how they can help the civilians. but before they help the civilians they've got to make sure their own people are okay. this is a base of some 40,000 marines. just as many civilians. you put it all together, you get close to a city of 100,000 here right on the shore. and they did take quite a bit of damage. so they're trying to figure out just when marines can come back. so the facilities here are ready for them. and when the marines who stayed he
