the salvation army of chattanooga opens its doors on march 16, 1893. never pausing in their service to the community, the salvation army continued operations through world war i, the great depression, and world war ii. for 125 years, members of the salvation army have worked to feed, clothe, and empower the great people of tennessee's third district. on a number of occasions, i can reflect on many fond memories with the salvation army. during the holiday season, i have had the honor of being co-chairman with my wonderful wife of 32 years. today we're celebrating our 3 nd wedding anniversary, to serve this outstanding organization and its wonderful people. as a matter of fact, my wonderful wife serves on the board of directors with several outstanding chat new englandians on this -- chattanooga n -- ns on this board. whenever i spend time on the salvation army i witness tennesseans coming together to provide help, hope, and healing to one another. that is the embodiment of the great volunteer spirit. mr. speaker, i would like to congratulate the salvati

firefighters in vallejo have put out a fire at the salvation army building. this is on tuolumne street. these are pictures from the scene. the fire broke out around 3:30 this morning. no body was injured. the cause is under investigation. right now we're waiting for the storm to clear, but many of of our organizations like red cross, salvation army, southern baptist disaster response are already engaged in housing and feeding mission for those that are sheltering. when the storm clears, our organizations will then stand up to go ahead and further that mission. we will also be engaged in cleanup work and other responses as needed. right now, we're concentrating on volunteering and donations, but we know that this nation is one that volunteers very readily. sometimes those volunteers come in a form that we can't utilize them right away. so what we're asking for, go to our website, www.nvoad.org. we have a means to register to volunteer in each state that's there. and there's a portal. for donation we're looking at corporate and kind donations for things that needed. the best donation is cash. what we've found in many disasters things arrive in disaster zone and we end up spending much more time working on donations than we do actually working with survivors and so we ask that you don't do any cleating drives or any of those kinds
