the salvation army of chattanooga opens its doors on march 16, 1893. never pausing in their service to the community, the salvation army continued operations through world war i, the great depression, and world war ii. for 125 years, members of the salvation army have worked to feed, clothe, and empower the great people of tennessee's third district. on a number of occasions, i can reflect on many fond memories with the salvation army. during the holiday season, i have had the honor of being co-chairman with my wonderful wife of 32 years. today we're celebrating our 3 nd wedding anniversary, to serve this outstanding organization and its wonderful people. as a matter of fact, my wonderful wife serves on the board of directors with several outstanding chat new englandians on this -- chattanooga n -- ns on this board. whenever i spend time on the salvation army i witness tennesseans coming together to provide help, hope, and healing to one another. that is the embodiment of the great volunteer spirit. mr. speaker, i would like to congratulate the salvati

also managed the salvation army's response to hurricane harvey last year.or joining us tonight. >> thank you for having us on, shannon. >> shannon: i want to talk about what the salvation army does during before, during, and after. i know you guys are already positioning assets. how do you prepare for something massive like this? >> the salvation army is uniquely positioned to support those affected by the hurricane. we have a national network of trained disaster staff and volunteers who will be deployed to various locations across the affected area. they are prepared to provide food, hydration, cleanup kits, hygiene supplies, particularly emotional character the first responders and survivors. >> shannon: reading about a lot of what you did with harvey last year and what you are doing with the storm, that caught my attention, that you provide counseling and spiritual support for people because for a lot of these folks, they will be absolute devastation to all of their worldly possessions. how do you meet them in that place and provide support? >> that is a

lauren: what are salvation army's, the number of presence on the ground, the food and the like in. >>gearing up 20 mobile feeding units to come to wilmington area, that'll be supported by a couple of distribution centers, one of which will focus on the food service on mobile units and the other one will focus on actual relief to residents of the cape fear whatever intea everything that we might need to help us get back on our feet. lauren: we are hearing words that some food banks are running out of food already, so what is the case for you and what do you need from people here in new york who want to do something to help? >> certainly, everything from the victims of the hurricane, those coming to help us, first responders, the linemen getting from the power back on and those types of things and the most effective thing and the most efficient way for people to help is to just give cash donations to the salvation army and multiple ways to do that online, it's the most effective way to do that and the time will come and specific needs that we need and the residents of cape need as well.

let's bring in the disaster core data for the salvation army.acuate 1 million people? >> it's definitely a challenge. i think they are doing their best to move people quickly. there also getting set up and moving government now. we have committed 52 mobile feeding units to three states. each of those can produce about 1,000 meals, so we are hoping we have the right capacity to really start service. >> dana: what is something that people either hunker down or they evacuate. is there something you find over and over again in these emergencies that people forget to do? >> there were a couple things. number one, make sure as you evacuate, as your report has said, get gasoline. make sure you have cash, because atms, credit cards may not be operational. make sure you take not just your pets, but also if you have any special needs. medications, things like that. make sure you take that with you so that when you get to a shelter or a hotel you can stay healthy. >> we know that the circuit is going to hit and people that evacuated will want to get back t

how does the salvation army come into play on this? >> if you were in a mandatory evacuation zone we encourage you to evacuate. i was there during hurricane katrina and saw what a major hurricane can do. i saw homes smashed to splinters. it is just not safe to stay. even we have salvation army units on the coast if we're told to evacuate, we're also getting out, go to a safe place, stage, come back in once the disaster is passed. neil: i was reading or at least the caroline area this could be the worst storm to hit in better than five decades. a lot of people are saying this could be another hazel which was a humdinger of the storm back in the 1950s, 1954. could eclipse that of hugo in 1989. what does the salvation army do knowing numbers like that, fears of catastrophic damage? some have begged at minimum of $20 billion? how do you get ready for something like that? >> well, you preposition your resources. we have trained disaster teams. you really do get ready but we do count on public support at this point in time. the best way to h

if you want to put support an organization like the salvation army go to salvation army.org.hose resources in long-term recovery. lauren: especially as many of the residence as they make their way back home might find themselves weeks without power. the cost to get up and running again. fema put it this way, category two storm, category four storm doesn't matter. is there a difference between getting hit by a train or a cement truck meaning it will be one big powerful disastrous storm. what do you do for the people that say we are not leaving? we are going to write it out and we will be fine? >> look, if you stay behind you are in for a miserable time took there will be power outages. there will be water outages work the best thing you can do, hopefully you prepared and got yourself an emergency supply kit of food and water and are prepared to be on your own up for a number. the best thing to do if you are in those very dangerous coastal areas was to evacuate. at this point it's time to hunker down. lauren: it's too late now; right? >> yeah, one of the worst things you can do

and so we reached out to sales force, red cross, salvation army, inter-faith council as well as the access community and next door, which is where we got a lot of volunteers from. we had over 80 people come out and act as survivor-actors. we provided some education around what disaster response and sheltering looks like. and that was a valuable piece of the exercise in providing that education and awareness to our city residents. the last piece is that we were able to train our h.s.a. and d.p.h. shelter staff on site. it was a just-in-time training. we focused on, how do we train our staff in the time of an event to be able to provide the services to run the shelter. and that was a really, really great outcome. next year, yellow command will focus on transportation. and so i'm really looking forward to moving to the transportation and working with many of you on that project as well. thanks. >> thank you, guys. thanks so much. and just to highlight, this is really meant to test our ability and our capability in the first days after an emergency assuming that we get no outside help. just to

salvation army, red cross, all of those folks are in the planning process also. what is going to be a tremendous storm or at least predicted to be. >> you have been here on the ground making the sort of preparations. give us a sense as to what is actually taking place there on the ground as you are looking at this forecast and seeing this monster headed right towards you. >> there is a lot of coordination taking place between the different levels of government and the nongovernmental organizations. they is that the zones on different emergency operations centers like we talked about at the county and city level. also at the state level there is discussion and they are doing situation reports trying to gather as much information as they can. they have got representatives at the state and federal level and there is a lot of resources that have been stocked in different federal bases it. it's water, costs, meals, emergency response vehicles. which are satellite vehicles in place to be able -- trying to maintain communication and get as much information as they can g

we are seeing tremendous work by the salvation army, they will mobilize mass feeding. that was two years ago in the middle of matthew, we served over 6 million meals. we will be ranking up, but it's all because of those wonderful volunteers who are pouring into help us provide this care. >> neil: a lot of people appreciated. the regional ceo for eastern north carolina. you might recall the cajun army. remember those guys? they were famous. for their simple rescues of folks caught one after another, particularly in texas last year. they are back at, suited up, ready to do battle on behalf of those who might get stuck with this storm. joining is now on the phone from south carolina. very good to have you. how are you holding up, and what are you seeing? >> to go well, we are holding up well. we have been here since the first wave. up to louisiana, our chapter, we have been over here since last friday. getting everything set up. our teams coming in, so we are pretty grounded right now. just about ready to get to the places where we can deploy quickly. >> neil: last year,
