're sending lots of love to your hometown of houston. it's been rough in southeast texas. tropical storm imelda spinning up and moving in and not moving, dumping in some cases 43 inches of rain over a three-day stretch and here in houston an all-time record broken for any day in september with over nine inches falling yesterday and there was chaos because of that. roads were flooded. people were stranded. over 1,000 rescues, both from home or cars of people, and folks who didn't need rescued just left their cars out there. we had a fleet of 150 tow trucks that went out to clear those hundreds of cars that were abandoned. folks that needed rescued, there were good samaritans out there getting creative, one of which dropped a ladder down to a man that came up with a child in his arms, saving that child's life. unbelievable stuff. and the kids were in school so a number of schools had to shelter in place as those schools began to flood. there were two fatalities, one of which was a man dr

rob marciano is tracking that from melbourne, florida. od morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, george. we're getting hit with the back side of this thing in the way of wind, waves and rain, of course, on the bay side. you can see the waves and the storm surge affecting us. so much of the storm has been compared to hurricane matthew. this is a road badly damaged during that storm, and they're still working on it. it is still open but so much of this state is surrounded by water and that made for a long night when you had a hurricane of this magnitude raking the coast. hurricane dorian packing a punch as it churns up the eastern seaboard. just 80 miles off the cost of cape canaveral, the category 2 hurricane slamming the shoreline with dangerous wind gusts, heavy rain and an intense storm surge. >> if you live in a residence that flooded over the last four years, you should evacuate your residence and move to higher ground. >> reporter: millions of americans under mandatory evacuation orders as they face several feet of storm surge. over

rob marciano is there in nags head in the outer banks. morning, rob. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. we are in it now. it is eye of hurricane dorian making landfall 30 miles to the south accelerating to the northeast. in about an hour it's going to be worse and as conditions have gone downhill in the last hour, winds ripping off this water. waves -- this is low tide and this water is going to come up in the next six hours. if i walk further out towards that beach, winds would really be cranking. over 300,000 people are without power and damage across the carolinas and we are still far from over when it comes to hurricane dorian. overnight, hurricane dorian's wrath turning deadly in the u.s. after officials confirm four people died in the carolinas. listen as a transformer explodes knocking out power to this gas station. the roadways desolate as roaring winds and rain whipped the area. that danger exactly why people are being ordered to shelter in place. another fierce rain band is coming in. i just got an alert on my phone to she

. >>> and let's turn to abc news senior meteorologist rob marciano in melbourne, florida. four states have declared states of emergency. what's the latest forecast of hurricane dorian? >> reporter: all right, martha, it's going to hit bahamas first. terrifying view of where it is and how strong it is. this eye is clear. the surrounding convection is intense. it's about to unleash the power of a category 5 on the island and then slowly make its way across the bahamas. 36 hours of these kind of winds is what they'll have. then toward the florida coastline. we do have its stalling and moving north. the national hurricane center has that line offshore but the cone of uncertainty certainly brings the possibility of a direct hit, tuesday, wednesday, all week long, martha, you're right, four states will be impacted by this. at the very least tropical storm force winds here in florida where warnings have been posted because we expect that to happen within 36 hours. martha. >> our thanks to rob and marcus. stay safe out there. >>> just a short time ago we stopped by the national re

abc's senior meteorologist rob marciano is just back from that area and he's here with us now with more on this catastrophic weather event. good morning to you, rob. >> hey, good morning, eva. you know, these heavy, extreme rainfall events like harvey and imelda is a signal of a warming climate. now that moisture is heading up towards the north and the waters are painfully receding slowly across parts of southeast texas. those folks are still reeling from the impacts of this slow-moving system. this morning, imelda's death toll rising. now five fatalities at the hands of this relentless storm. parts of southeast texas engulfed by more than 43 inches of rain. the tropical storm inundating streets, swallowing cars and blocking traffic for those trying to get out. officials and volunteers out helping the hundreds trapped in floodwaters including an improbable rescue of a mother and daughter stuck in this ditch. >> all i seen is her vehicle hit that water, and i'm thinking, oh, my god. i'm going to stand here and watch this woman die. >> reporter: a 16-year-old football player saving the da

rob marciano in cocoa beach, florida. he has more on the preparations. good morning, rob. >> good morning, george. with the catastrophic category are 5 storm so close to the florida coast line, it has been an unnerving holiday weekend to say the least. you can see from our live drone shot how vulnerable this coastline is to a potentially category 4 storm surrounded by water. for areas like this one that have been ordered to evacuate today, it's the time to get out. overnight, new images showcasing the storm's strength. the overflowing rush of water eroding this florida roadway, the tar and sand swept into the sea. in jacksonville, panicked residents preparing for the worst, customers stocking up on wood to board up their homes, cases and cases of water and trying to fill up their gas tanks. this one gas station featuring a line of cars around the block. windows in this shopping center all boarded up. steel plates draped over these windows. >> we're just trying to keep the water from getting in our houses a little bit the best we can. >> reporter: this is

so storm surge warnings extend up along the coast up to south carolina but i want to go up to rob marciano melbourne beach to describe a bit more of their concern. >> reporter: good morning to you, ginger. we're looking at the tide beginning to come in. as you mentioned, high tide right around this area at noon and then again at midnight. with this storm moving so slowly, we'll have several iterations of that. see our second camera, it will give you an idea of the surf out here. this storm is about 100 miles away and the way it's been all night long. you have the surge, the waves and the astronomically high tides. the king tides are adding another two to three feet to this area. what is good about this part of florida is that on the east coast, on the atlantic side, we have for the most part these protective dunes and we're camped out at a house ten feet behind a dune that's 15 feet high. so when you talk about a four to seven foot surge this area won't be breached. there's a number of areas along a1a that will see overrun and see breach and we will see people cut off from the main land. t
