florida governor ron desantis there. meteorologist jennifer gray is in the cnn weather center.is a hugely threatening storm, but it's also very ominous because it's so unpredictable and slow. >> that's the main thing. it's so slow. this is incredibly powerful. this is not just barely a category 5. this tops the category 5 threshold by leaps and bounds. this is the strongest storm to ever hit the bahamas. it has made that first land hall, the an co-islands that's part of the bahamas. it's moving at a snail's pace. you can pretty much walk fast or jog faster than this storm is going. and it's go ing to sit over the bahamas for a good 36 hours at least before making that northward turn. and so when you think about that, 185-mile-per-hour winds, gusts higher than 200 for a 36-hour duration, that is unprecedent. so this is moving at seven miles per hour right now. it's going to slow even more before this takes a turn to the north. and how soon that turn happens is crucial when you're talking about the impacts to florida and, of course, the rest of the southeast u.s. here are all the

and because of that, florida's governor, ron desantis, has suspended all the tolls on major highways to make it easier for people to get out. we're also seeing more school closings across the state and people are making their way to shelters. joining us now, vice admiral scott bushman, atlantic area commander for the united states coast guard. admiral, thanks for taking the time. as dorian does get closer to florida and the whole coastline there, what is your mindset as you anticipate the impact of this monster storm? >> our mindset -- thank you very much for having me. our mindset is we want to be ready. we have been preparing this storm for over a week now and want to make sure we're ready for any possibility. for our local captain of ports, working with the maritime industry to ensure our ports are open as long as possible to let commodities to flow in. from a search and rescue standpoint, we're looking at our assets, our aircraft, our boats. we're getting that out of the immediate storm's path so they're protected but close enough as possible to come in as quickly as possible to

bernard, how would you characterize the level of coordination you're having with the governor there ron desantisith the federal government for that matter as you try to prepare for this storm? >> well, what i can tell you, we experienced hurricane irma two years ago and this is a very different administration in terms of the preparation for this storm. we have met with the governor, he came to palm beach county. we had a conversation with fema. and the white house in terms of the preparation for this storm because this storm could potentially devastate the state of florida and i would say the coordination between local government, the state of florida and the administration has been really great for the residents of palm beach county and the state of florida. >> mayor, what are you doing over the next 24 hours or so? i imagine right now you're starting to feel the wind pick up and then if this thing is to make landfall it will be about in 24 hours from now. what are you doing over the next 24 hours to ensure that as many residents follow these evacuation orders in the key areas as possible? >> w
