and we expected a bit of a drop, bertha. is this the drop we were expecting, though? >> just about, kris and marcus. we've seen over the last 12 days as fears over the coronavirus have intensified the markets have moved about 3.5% a day over the last 12 days or so. when you think about the fact that all of 2019 the average was about half a percentage point. this volatility is something we continue to expect. we haven't seen back-to-back gains since february 6. as you can imagine a lot of focus on the coronavirus. about three stocks are trading to the upside in the s&p. two of them are drug makers that are working on solutions to help treat the virus. one of them is gilead which has a drug that is being tested on victims in china and according to u.s. health officials it's looking pretty good. this is early on. another is working on a vaccine but also has an arthritis drug that some believe may also be able to be used. they have drugs that might be tested to treat some patients at this point. at this point there is not a vaccine or a treatment. they are trying to treat the people who are afflicted. a

kris? >> reporter: hey there, marcus and laura.ill start to feel the financial impact on the airlines cutting back on the flights that we talked about. united is trying to cut back workforce expenses by offering employees voluntary unpaid leave, also asking employees to choose a reduced schedule. they postponed merit races for non-union workers and imposed a hiring freeze. you'll see a 10% cut in flights. international service will be cut by 20%, this is for april on into may. jetblue also scaling back 5% and the airlines says -- president trump who has been downplaying the severity of the outbreak met with airline executives yesterday. the coronavirus response coordinator said the public should be reassured. >> i was very reassured to hear the airlines talk about the cleaning procedures and the three levels, because i think that will be reassuring for the american public. >> reporter: while those two angles are are working, if you're a traveler make sure you bring hand sanitizer. ear welcome to bring sanitizing wipes, and wash you

patients and their hospitals not doing enough to change that nbc bay area chris sanchez is joining us live with what the nurses want sand the response from the hospital. kri kris. >> well, hi there, marcus. >> reporter: they are saying they have to ask for personal masks. they are getingng simple surgic masks and asked to wear them about four hours at a time as they move between patient to patient. several nurses protested outside kaiser santa clara this morning asking foror more personal protective equipment, those ppes from the hospital and they also want more transparency on the guidelines the hospital is using to determine their risk of infect that coronavirus is being transmitted via droplet, like when a patient coughs or sneezes and that the virus not airborne, however, they say that new data suggests that might not be the case. several nurse's unions are pushing for healthcare workers to be tested immediately, along with getting them more protective equipment. nurses say otherwise they can spread it among themselves, on to their patients and on to their families. is they're suggesting we keep the masks on for four hours. because that's usable time. but to use it normally, our pro

and financial. kris sanchez joins us. kris, what will this mean for consumers? >> reporter: i want to give you an indication how popular these grocery delivery services are, marcus. in the last month the number of orders placed doubled over six months ago. so, clearly an essential service for people who feel like they cannot or should not be leaving their home. but if you are expecting a grocery delivery, you may not get it exactly when you're planning to. as many as 200,000 instacart workers are planning to walk off the job today. we haven't seen them do it to this point. but the employees want a $5 per order hazard fee and a default tip of 10%. instacart says it's distributing personal protective equipment to food service workers and they're launching a new tip setting. but workers are still anxious. >> a lot of us are literally making the decision between our health and our financial security right now. >> reporter: now, if you shop in person, you've seen some of the worker protections now in place like the plexiglas separating you from the cashier at the register. social distancing reminders and regular wipedowns. we've also covered protests by nurses who ar

kris. 6:38 for you right now. a look at that commute for you and, mike, that backup -- we haven't seen this a lot. >> until just after 6:00, that's right, marcus. we're looking at the backup for the bay bridge. that's the worst of it coming over from the east bay through this area off the maze. look at that, contra costa county mild slowing. this is light er. just past the toll plaza. they have maintained a nice clear route as well. we don't get to see it but here you go. a smooth drive across the span. i have new numbers from bay area toll authority, went over them, comparing them. let's do the cliff notes version. the volume people have been talking about very light around the bay, so light, in fact, for folks who have moved here, it hasn't been like this since the recession. people are like, what was it like before things got crazy. that's what it's like. >> look out the window. >> very light traffic. we do not like the reason. >> that's year to year we're talking about. >> the numbers across the bridge, the coronavirus, people commuting from home. >> we'll probably see that grow with a lot of schools closing next week, too. >>> absolutely.

and to tell us how the count is going here in the south bay. kris? >> reporter: hi there, marcus. folk are hard at work. and this machine is running since before election day. this crew got here at 3:00 and they don't clock out until 7:00 this morning. at last count here in santa clara county half of the 240,000 ballots cast have been processed. now 15 california -- excluding santa clara and while there were growing pains here in the bay area, look at the lines down in l.a. someeem waited in line for hours to cast ballots. some of them for hours after the polls closed at 8:00 last night. the l.a. county elections officer said that the new voting machines at the vote centers weren't the real problem. it is really the check anyone process. the voters say it was worth the way. >> my ancestors fought for the right to be here so i stand as long as necessary. >> we're moving about a foot every five minutes maybe. >> reporter: the long vote times prompted the bernie sanders campaign to file a federal lawsuit against los angeles county demanding that polling locations be open longer but th
